Alright, story time.

Just a few days ago, I played the original Portal. I escaped Glados' death trap and got around to the point where she said she is NOW going to try to kill me.

My heart skipped a fucking beat. I had to stop playing to calm me down.

I know there are better and less milder ones out there. So tell me Escapist-o-forum, What is you're favourite gaming moment that made you wish you were wearing brown trousers?

I panic constantly during the final boss of Uncharted 2, since he can 1-2 shot kill you from range with his shotgun on Hard/Crushing. And the way the boss fight is set-up, he's constantly out of your viewing range.

Tense as fuck.

And annoyingly hard as fuck, too.

If he ambushes me when I turn around to shoot the resin, I get startled easily and scared as hell.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth:

"Why, I'm just going to go ahead and sleep in this fishy hotel in Innsmouth. Surely nothing will go wrong as long as I lock the door, right?"

Seconds later,

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

It happens a lot to me in multiplayer, especially when I get on a monumental killstreak in the Gears 3 Beta. Mostly because I never know when someone's gonna come up behind me and blow me away with a shotgun.

Leeet's see. Oh! In Doom 3, when Pinky pops up. I'm trying to get away and Pinky is just there mauling away at me. Not my favorite moment, but it does make me panic.

I like how the magic tree sap gives him the ability to throw 5 fucking grenades from one hand.

[sub]How are we not past this type of boss-fight design?[/sub]

OT: The poisonous headcrabs in Ravenholm. Always see 'em a few seconds before they fuck your face. Cue shotgun spamming.

Whenever I hear a headcrab I start panicking...

If I see a poison headcrab I run out of the room and throw all my grenades into it (Also fire off rockets if I have them)

I hate those things...

Yeah! The first time I played it I was considering to stop playing because I didn't want anyone else to die.

The bit where theres a little growly noise and the platform shakes and the end boss pops up. I was like ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH. I'm such a cool and collected Commander...honest.

Yeah I know its not the scariest thing out there but even when I've played it enough to be able to predict when somethings going to happen and scare me, I still relax the moment before one of the ghosts or something in FEAR pop out.

Getting attacked from behind after walking straight past a camouflaged enemy always freaks me out as well

In Amnesia, when you go round a corner & come face to face with a monster. I literally jumped back out of my chair the first time that happened.

What makes that moment so effective is that they purposefully put you in a corner. It would have been different if it was charging down a hallway. While scary in itself, you probably could have killed it before it got to you. Doom 3's team says Fuck That and puts you in a small room with it. A well done moment.

The parts in resident evil for the gamecube where you meet that mutated girl that's exclusive to the gamecube version. Those are really the only scary parts in the game. The first time you meet her was scary enough, but the second time when you're in the caves underground and you run into her I shat my brain pants. As fast as I could I immediately ran to the room on the other side and stayed in there for a few minutes. I had to go back there but I really didn't want to, I was actually really panicking , franticly thinking of a way to get to the other side without running into that thing again, or just thinking of turning off the gamecube. I My health was like almost full, I wasn't actually in any danger of dying but damn, I don't think I ever was that immersed in a game. I don't think I've ever been that scared, and I scare easily.
But by the third time when you encounter her it's not scary anymore, because you can now face the fear (fight with her) and not run away from it.

Pretty much when fighting a player online in a FPS game, a simple mess up like pressing the wrong button cause give a openning for the player to kill you easily from a simple mess up.
