I'm curious to find out what kinds of music a lot of you listen to when you game. I know that when I play Diablo or something like that, I work a lot better with music in the background. Generally, I'll listen to anything with a steady beat, but a majority of it is either classic or hard rock. What about the rest of you?

I'll just listen to the music I listen to normally. I don't really have 'gaming music'

The game should have good enough music to keep me interested anyways.

The actual music in the game since they went through the trouble of making an OST instead of throwing in a hodgepodge of licensed songs I couldn't care less for.

Besides, the music is part of the game itself. You don't play Silent Hill while listening to dad-rock or blast speed metal while playing Muramasa.

When I play games, I listen to Touhou music, a game series itself, strangely enough. Granted, it's usually techno Touhou music, which is made by groups who often only are inspired by the original Touhou music, but I think that counts.

This is of course assuming this is a FPS or a game with long periods of time where you don't need to focus on sound too much, like Civ4 and X3.

I guess it depends on the game and what your doing.
Most other games, if i listen to music its mostly slow music, especially in fast games. Theres something rewarding i find in beating someone to death in Fallout 3 while listening to the Alice in Wonderland theme...

I usually don't listen to music while gaming since it kills immersion for me. I tend to play story-driven games, though, so that makes a big difference. I guess it doesn't matter if you switch the audio off on a fighting game or one of the multiplayer FPS maps, you won't miss much anyway. Not true for something like Heavy Rain or Dragon Age, though.

Mmm classic/hard rock... I love you man and wish you were a girl so I could have the babies =D Glad to see us classic/hard rock dudes are still alive and kicking. Yes I would have to go the same.

If I am playing something like Mount&Blade though I would probably go with movie OSTs like Braveheart or Blood Diamonds.

I almost never listen to music while gaming unless it's a brainless puzzle game or something like Bust-a-Move.

I like to get fully immersed in a game when playing and music is a HUGE part of that.

For me it would be more distracting than listening to music during a movie.

Two main songs, "Don't Stop me Now" by Queen or "Runaround" by Blues Traveler, either that or just power metal, Firewind or DragonForce, on shuffle.

I'm really picky with Touhou remixes and I trust no circle to be consistently good with the quality of their remixes. Most of the good stuff that came out in Comiket 77 were from new faces. Hell, 珍時怪異 might just be the best release from C77, but then again, I'm a sucker for ambient house/techno.

For me it usually depends on the game. If it has good music that's rather prominent I'll just listen to the games, but if the music is more for ambience or it doesn't fit my mood I'll vary between rap(usually RPGs and such) and rock(actiony games).

Hard rock or metal all the way. Although admittedly I do mix and match some of my other music for games. Like maybe Pink Floyd for a game where I feel an atmosphere needs to be more strange. And sometimes I choose music for comedic value, like Alestorm in a pirate game.

I love repeating this over and over during multiplayer games like gears of war

I prefer to listen to the game's music, especially BlazBlue's OST, Shadow of the Collusus OST, and the Shatter OST. Some of the best music in games, methinks. Oh yeah, and GNR studios in Fallout 3.
