What kind of music do you listen to when gaming? Unless it might distract me i usually have music playing when i game. I prefer trance and techno.
Also, what kind of games can you not listen to music due to distractions? I find it hard for online fps's.

I turned off the music in FO3 one day just to see if it felt more wasteland-y and I never turned it back on. I liked it, the wind and little crumbling noises indoors added to the ambiance for me.

I recently discovered these guys, and it has noticeably improved my darkspawn killing skills.

I listen to video game music when I'm gaming....Which sounds like a really sarcastic answer, but I listen to video game music when not gaming too. ...It's really all I listen to. >.>

Gears of War Co-op playthrough at my friends house with Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor playing. It's weird I know but somehow it worked. I usually play Zombie games with the best of Billy Idol playing. Other than that I guess I play a lot of Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM and Rob Zombie if it is a game that I have played through several times and don't care for the music.

I like to mute the TV and listen to classical stuff like Mozart and Beethoven while playing Rock Band.

Kidding aside, I like most video games' soundtracks, so I rarely mute them. In fact, I often listen to video game music outside of gaming as well. Spend some time on youtube with Supradarky's favorite VGM list [http://www.youtube.com/user/SupraDarky] of almost 900 songs, and I'm sure you'll find something that you love.

I don't listen to other music when I game. I tend to put my trust in the developers that the SFX and music they put in their games properly match the pacing of the story.

It does seems like a good idea though, especially when the game only really has music (especially the same song for that matter) during battle portions.

Try listening to classical music while playing a game like Killing Floor or Left 4 Dead.

I'll just leave this here.

On topic: depends on the game...SSF4 + Blaz Blue soundtrack = win

I'm assuming we're talking about games without soundtracks. When that occurs, I usually listen to very energetic tracks. Or angry ones, either works.

I listen to the game soundtrack. However, this does remind me of a story. When my friends and I used to play Battlefield 1942 at the local LAN shop we'd pop in a special playlist for the game. It put the entire game in a different light. Imagine playing that game while this is playing.

Ugh, can't make the youtube link work but here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww8wqEgFIA8

I recall a moment where we were storming a beach and only one of us lived. He screamed "NOOOO", went prone and staring dropping the other team like flies. It was kinda inspiring. He wasn't joking either, it was totally moving.

Side note: that song also works well for epic tabletop gaming.
