Chrono Cross would also be one of my favorites. Next time you go to the beach, bring the soundtrack and just lay on the sand listening to the waves and the music. It's perfect for that.

And the most famous song from Chrono Cross:

QFT. Eleven years later and Chrono Cross is still my undisputed favorite game of all time with my undisputed favorite soundtrack ever. Mitsuda is absolutely brilliant.

More recently indie hit Bastion has worked its way into my heart. The bluesy-western-rock soundtrack is an absolute joy to listen to. It's the perfect background music.


Also worth mentioning is the BlazBlue series. The heavy metal/symphony blend is great, even if I would have worked more 'symphony' in. But it's a fighting game, so this fits perfectly.

I totally agree about the Phoenix Wright soundtracks. The made the games so much more engaging. I'd play through entire games to get to certain tracks.

Like say, this one.

Shoji Meguro has disappointed me once, though. The Strange Journey soundtrack was a mess. Not that he doesn't rock though.

Anything from the Ace Combat series is usually good.

I recently learned to absolutely love the soundtrack for Bastion. All of it was great, however my favourite was the end theme. It absolutely sent chills down my spine the first time I heard it. It combined the theme of two earlier songs from the game.

Long intro? Yeah! You wouldn't sing over the narrator either, would you?

Seriously, though, listen to it closely. There is so much subtlety to the timing! Its one of my all time favorite places, songs, everythings in gaming, and really pushed the machine to be its very best.
