Gaming, not as fun as it used to be?

I have to admit that i haven't been interested in new games for a while now. I still find myself playing Silent Assassin, max payne 2, jagged alliance 2, carmageddon 2, and even some older infinity engine games. Newer games have this alarming guality of being way too into themselves. They might have neat story, real actors and super fine looking graphics, realistic physics engines, the only thing that is missing is the fun to actually play it.

I remember playing carmageddon and *laughing* while making human minche meat with a bulldozer that spends more time in the air than in the ground or in max quickloading over and over just to see how many ways i can empty that room full of blacksuited commandos while shouting "yeah" and "ooh" over excitement. I remember playing alliance with just 4 guys and using ninja tactics to occupy a military base.

Nowadays something is just missing. Last game i tried was far cry. Looked good, feld good at first, but then got all boring. I can jump over a house, hide between rocks, turn myself invisible and the throw all the enemies down the cliffs one at a time and it's still boring! I'm not sure what has happened to gaming but the same thing is visible on movies and series as well. Something that was cool and funny a couple years ago has turned into boring and uninteresting.

I got really bored of single-player FPS's. There are so many of them and they can only be so long before my interest runs screaming from the room. I'm starting to regress back to games that are more fun and far fetched as opposed to ones that are trying to be as realistic as possible. Didn't buy GOW2 for exactly that reason although it is meant to be awesome. I just couldn't be bothered with it. At the moment anyway. I would fucking murder another Hitman.

I agree with the topic title, gaming isnt what it used to be, atleast not for me, back when i started on Commodore 64/NES, gaming was my favourite thing in the world, then when Nintendo 64 came i almost climaxed, it was everything i wanted to do, but after that its been going downhill at a steady pace, and with this current gen of gaming, its hit rock-bottom for me, with generic shooters covered in mud and gravle everywhere.

There are still some gems out there, Megaman 9 and Bionic Commando to mention some, who not only go back to a playstyle long forgotten, but also they use more colors than brown, gray and black, they actually look like fun games, they arent gritty, they arent realistic, they are games at its purest, not trying to replicate reality is the best thing about gaming, and its the fundamental reason why anyone game in the first place, to escape from reality for a while to have fun.

I have to say that gaming has peaked at around 05 or so. At the time i had already played all the games i wanted, but silent assassin and max payne 2 were the highest point of shooters. at the turn of the millenium we got gems like diablo 2(really! it truly was a gem when it arrived), jagged alliance 2, baldurs gate 2(unrivalled in its genre - "games that kick ass") hitmans and max paynes. After that there has been little to be excited over.
