Gaming on a Mac Platform

Straight into the thick of things, my old XPC gaming rig finally dropped itself over the weekend - I actually think it's got a dead PSU - and I am looking for a new one.

There are some unusual caveats (for me) in that I'm doing this on a budget of around $1,100AU, which can make it hard. So I started looking at some Apple kit, and the new mac mini looks pretty nice.

Thus I am asking you of the escapist, do you think that this is a viable option? Obviously the main points here are that it is a 2.66 Core 2 (at best) with 4GB of RAM (or 8GB if I can swing it) and holding a NVIDIA GeForce 320M. Try to ignore the fact that it's a Mac, I don't care what you think about the company. Some research seems to indicate that the nVidia/driver support is going to be an issue as Apples "bootcamp" drivers aren't quite up to scratch, but apart from some SC2 and maybe a bit of C&C4, I'm not going to be doing much in the way of latest gaming any more.

Has anyone tried one? Or perhaps an iMac? Or am I going to be stuck building a custom one from Alienware and trying to get it under? I don't want to re-use hardware I have, as it was all on the way out anyway, so I'm pretty well stuck with what I've got (that is, screen keyboard and mouse). I'm relatively ok with not having upgradeable options, so a small form factor machine isn't out (as long as it has the grunt).

Side note: I get some nice discounts for being employed by a reseller, don't think I miscalculated the costs on the Mac Mini - I am doing asking this purely for the pro's and con's of using the aforementioned harware in a gaming environment.

Thoughts? Arguments for and against? Recommendations?

Edit: I can run windows on the Mini, and probably will, I have a license of 7 free, which negates the software argument. It's really the hardware I am interested in.

I'd say the main arguments against getting a Mac, is that "it's not a PC", and that you can't get many games for it.
The first one is just stupid, and the second one has ways around it.

Yeah I forgot to mention I have a copy of Windows 7, so that's out. I'll edit the FP to reflect. Thanks for pointing that out.

As a mac user now, even with steam, I no longer have delusions of using a mac for gaming.

Currently setting some money aside to save for an Alienware desktop.

I'm guessing it's possible, but I feel like the Alienware is the most direct, easiest solution.

Build your own, save tons of dough. It's not as hard as it looks.

from what i have heard macs just have trouble running games because games simply arnt made for them. there are games on steam now that run on mac and i have also heard that you can use bootcamp (i think thats it) to run games but tbh if you are gonna do that then you might as well go for a pc because you will most likely get more bang for your buck in terms of hardware if you do that

My brother has a 27" iMac and uses it for gaming, so it could work, particularly given you have Windows 7, but I just can't see getting a Mac if you're looking at gaming, unless you're particularly keen on GarageBand.

This.

Admittedly, the Mac Mini is not really the best choice if you're wanting to game, simply because of its limited hardware. But on Macs in general, there are not really any legitimate reasons not to.

well if you have windows 7 you should build a custom built PC.

Why? Because it's a Mac? There's a reason I started this thread and it wasn't to hear BS from fanboys of either side.

Be aware that Mac is definitely a far worse choice if you're going specifically for a gaming computer, purely because of compatibility issues. If you're really set on buying an Apple computer, then my recommendation is to also get Windows and run that through Bootcamp. It might slow down your computer a bit, but you get Mac for your general computing and Windows for when you want to game.

That's as unbiased an answer as I can give right now :)

Macs aren't tuned for gaming. Gaming PCs are. If you're going out of your way to buy a new system for gaming purposes, a Mac doesn't make sense. If you've already got one or planning on getting one for other reasons, then sure you can make it play games.

um... no... I was just saying that if you have windows 7 you mind as well use it since you have it...
