I was just playing Fatal Frame III: The Tormented, and on the last boss, I was infuriated.

This boss, every little while, makes the screen go dark and chases you around. If it touches you, instant death.

I've tried several times, and another problem dawned on me: when I die, I need to go back to the main menu, select my save point, re-do the same short section of gameplay, and then I am permitted to fight the boss again.

This got me thinking: what are some things that games shouldn't do? That frustrate players and take away from the gaming experience?

1) No insta kills. I'm by no means adverse to a challenge. But a one hit kill is, in my opinion, pushing it.
2) Give us a continue/retry option on boss fights. What's the point in walking the same section over again?

What are your thoughts, Escapist?

For me it's:
1. Instant Kills
2. Non-Mutable VoIPs
3. UIs designed for 70inch+ TVs

Instant kills really infuriate me (like watching my friend play FF13. The final boss casts death on a random party member and if it hits the party leader.... game over.(I'll be the first to admit I haven't played the whole game through and I'm sure there's some kind of strategy but This was the only one I could recall on the spot, It was just REALLY REALLY annoying to both of us having that happen lol.))

Non-Mutable voice chat on games is a real killer for me because the last thing I want to hear is someone breathing into their mic or hearing THEIR game through my speakers or hearing them blabber or talk trash/etc. Battlefield 1943 is really bad about this. And when people DO actually talk it's so squeeky and distorted to the point that it's just annoying and useless.

Lastly, and probably the most annoying of the three, UIs. I'm on a rather small TV ~20-22 inch or so... So playing modern games on said TV is a real pain because most game-designers expect you to have a giant TV. It gets really hard to read some texts, or see map icons/etc.

This. This is the worst thing about modern gaming.

-Not having an autosave function (or a quicksave one for PC).
-Not having continues, this was more for older games where you had to start from the start of the game again if you run out of lives.
-When they put more effort into the story than the gameplay.
-Not having it autosave just before a Boss battle, nothing sucks worse than having to fight drones again every time you die in a boss battle.
-cutscenes/dialogue sequences longer than 10 minutes.. especially when they aren't crucial to the game.

Unskippable cutscenes. Terribly placed checkpointse. Having mandatory abilities be missable. Game-crippling bugs. Could think of a lot more but this is off the top of my head.

Instant Kills are good, if they're dodge-able by skill, rather than luck.
Well, with this particular boss in mind, the screen is dark so visibility is limited. If you factor in the camera angles as well, it can pop up beside you and there's little you can do. What it really comes down to is trying to find the direction you can run the farthest in the confines of the room, as turning around will pretty much get you killed.

I'd say that autosave should be mandatory but some games suit the "fixed save point" approach.

My big one is unskippable cutscenes; 'specially after playing through Kingdom Hearts again, and getting stuck on the same boss fight again.

I learned that cutscene off by heart I had to see it so many times. Utterly unnecessary.

For me, the main irritants are;

Long unskippable cutscenes, usually before a boss that will take you a few tries to dispatch. Nothing seems to anger me greater than that, after watching the same long cutscene about 4 times in a row.

Another one is QTE's in the middle of a cutscene. The first time it annoyed me was on my first ever playthrough of Rsident Evil 4. I had gone off to get a drink and when I came back I saw the gameover screen. At first I was perplexed, but when I watched through the cutscene again, realization dawned on me, followed by irritation and "what a stupid bloody idea..."

Something that really bugs me is not having a proper save function, instead relying only on auto-saves. If I fuck something up, especially something that has to do with the plot, I want to be able to reverse it.

Though shalt not have perks in an FPS multiplayer that increase the power of a gun beyond its original parameter. I am looking at you Stopping Power/ Magnum Ammo!

It breaks the flow and balance of the game. And everyone end up using it cause they want to stay competitive with those who are using it.

and while I am on my soap box, though shalt not have force multiplier classes that are also the healers. (BF:BC2 Medic) It's like if the Heavy could heal himself as he had a medic with him at all times. Would break the games balance.

Cutscenes every two seconds to show something obvious (Van Helsing)
Horrible ports like Marvel UA 2. I loved the first one and was unaware it would rape my poor PS2's processor :( I have never seen a framedrop on a PS2 before that. I am so beaten up about it.
