Gaming skills that seem to diminish the longer you play them

I know the wording of the subject sounds confusing but can best be explained in an example:

I play many many different types of games anywhere from MMOs to RTS but my guilty pleasure is First Person Shooters such as Counter-strike, Day of Defeat, Halo 3, etc. I will find myself at first, in like Counter-strike, just rocking the score board going 50-5 just landing the most ridiculous shots but after I would say 30 minutes to an hour I would start just sucking hardcore, not being able to land any shots anymore and going 3+ rounds with no kills. It almost literally feels like my skill has diminshed the longer I play.

So the question is, has anyone else noticed or experienced this, and it's not just FPS either it could be a range of different types of platforms.

Reflex games, twitch games, rhythm games, that sort of stuff.

I'll sit down, go awesomely, and within 5-15 minutes I'm failing and swearing.

I think realistically with the likes of FPS's online your reactions are constantly being changed and and tested depending on how good your ping is and on the strength of your Internet connection. I can play well one game and next thing I know everyone is killing me with 4 bullets and I am emptying entire magazines with seemingly no effect.

That made me rage quit a few times last night.

Anywho, my point being that if you are in that situation you tend to try and correct a bad ping experience by being more alert and aware of your surroundings, etc etc.

Rule of Thumb - the harder you try, the more you fail.

When my 'burst of glory' ends, I usually either change game type or take a 5 min break.

Hmm, no it's usually the opposite for me. I've come back to counterstrike a lot, and whenever I do I can't hold my own. It takes a while for me to get better again but if I quit for a month then I lose it all.

When I'm up there I'm up there all the time though.

It is usually quite the opposite. Even Ninja Gaiden 2 has you improve the longer you play it.

However, I would say Guitar Hero. Here me out.

When you start your session, you suck, then you get better and reach a godly zone, but then there's your crash and soon your fingers and wrist hates you.

Yeah, I think this is probably it. As I do tend to get all serious than nerd rage when I start to do bad.

Yes lol

I'll put it in, literally destroy everyone, then I might not do so well, I try hard and I just fail even more.

I also find I play better in the morning than night

I feel that way when I'm sniping. But sniping is hard work. You have to sit there and wait with 100% focus on your entire field of vision, so that when you see something move in the distance you can scope it, target, and take it out, all in one shot. You also have to have escape routes in case you're sighted, or ambushed, and know where to go for your next shot.

It's intense, and it's hard to keep it up long term.

In Mario Kart, the longer you play, your ability to not get nuked by Blue Shells decreases.

The only game where I get worse over time is Moderen warfare 2. I was totaly awesome(pretty good) when it came out, but whenever i play now, I suck so bad it hurts(prolly because I squeeze the controller hard enough to turn my knuckles white out of rage, but I digress).

I thought maybe everyone eles had gotten good in the time that I wasn't playing, but then I went and played some single player and got destroyed by the computer. How the hell dose that work?

I used to get better overtime with guitar hero, but then I got worse. It's probably because of the resultant carpal tunnel syndrome.

Naw, I'm usually just consistent. I may get worse, but that's cause I get bored and then I start to dick around.

It's like that all the time in games like MW2 since the number one decider in all fights is ping. Since everyone but the host generally has pings of 100-200ms if the host has a GOOD internet connection. If it's bad they rocket up to 300+. At those kind of pings on the host screen you are dead before you even fire since SOMEBODY didn't give us dedi servers.

The main factors in getting kills in MW2 are

1) Connection
2) Weapon used
3) Skill

In that order
