Bethesdas Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are my absolute favorite RPGs. Oblivion is very much showing its age by now, but if you can get past that it has many great storylines and characters, in a very big and open world. Skyrim is great too, although I did enjoy Oblivions quests a bit more. It looks great, plays great and still has a lot of cool stuff to explore and do!

Fallout 3 is lots of fun, but also showing its age by now, and if you play Fallout: New Vegas (by Obsidian)first you'll miss a lot of that games features when you try Fallout 3. I would actually recommend doing Fallout: New Vegas, its a really fun game with loads of content, really nice characters and quests, lots of roleplaying oportunities and, for me at least, tons of replay value.

Best part about all of these games is that they are extremely moddable, and has a huge modding community. Go to www.nexusmods.com and download some of the most popular ones that seems like they would be fun, or find one of the many videoguides on modding these games that exist on YouTube. I've gotten hundreds of hours of aditional entertainment out of these games thanks to its modding scene, and that is truly why I love these games so much.

Thank you, Bethesda, for letting your fans make your already enjoyable games truly amazing!

maybe dark souls 2 or fallout 3

or persona 4 if you have either a PS2, PS3 or a PS vita

those are the only RPGs ive been able to enjoy
My brother has been trying to get me to play Fallout: New Vegas - but the whole post-apocalyptic theme that has overloaded movies, games and television lately, has got me not too eager to try it. Dark Souls looks cool! I'll definitely research that. And yes, I have a PS2.
I have a Steam key for Fallout New Vegas that I've been unable to give away. Got it during one of the sales because I thought my daughter needed it, but then found out she already had it. I've offered it to everyone else I know.

It's yours if you want it. Or anyone really, I'd just like to get it out of my inventory. :)

For more recent ones I would go with the Souls series or Dragon's Dogma. Both are a little more light on the story department, a lot of the lore is stuff you piece together yourself rather than what is told to you but both have a absolutely amazing gameplay. Imagine if Dark Souls, Skyrim and Shadow of the Colossus had a beautiful three way love child, that is Dragon's Dogma in a nutshell.

If you are more focused on narrative I would try the Witcher and Witcher 2

Different strokes for different folks, true. But what i listed up there are the classics and games that are still considered much better then 99% of other stuff. If you want to play RPGs and get into the RPG community you should play. Also they are just good games, damn damn good good damn good damn and spoken very well of by most game journalists today

Och and one more important thing, remember that Jrpgs and rpgs are usually very different, in fact they are almost two different genres of games so if you like say planescape: torment and want to play more games like it, then JRPGs are not really the way to go, on the other hand if you are a fan of FF then you might not like baldurs gate or arcanum and any similar to them games
Anything with some age can be considered a classic. Even mediocre games are considered classics by its fans.
I saw you disparaging, I merely returned the favour to balance things out, I do enjoy a couple of those titles.

This is very true they are very much different though there are some exceptions, and they used to be very similar.
Which reminds me...where is the real ancient stuff folks? I see people suggesting oldish games, but nothing like the likes of Ultima...not that I'm suggesting Ultima of course as its never clicked with me. Oldest RPG I ever played (and by play I mean complete) was Shin Megami Tensei 2 which was 1994...don't think there is anything before that point I can stand to endure...got half way through Phantasy Star I suppose (1987).

Wow, thank you for all the information, it's really kind of you!
Yeah, I tried Skyrim for about 20 minutes and then put it down(I know a lot of gamers will judge me for that) I just got so overwhelmed. I had a friend who loved Oblivion and with what you said about it really makes me want to play!
You're not the only one. I too much prefer Bioware RPGs and struggle to get into Bethesda's ones. Oblivion was pretty good but I also find them very overwhelming because there appears to be no end to the quests. I haven't played much of Skyrim but it appears to be just like Oblivion. Fallout 3 I could not get into at all. Got out of the vault and saw nothing but ruins and was just like "I would rather be back in the vault" and quit the game from there.

Bioware RPGs have that...personality to them that I enjoy. Sure they might be more linear but it makes the game feel tighter and the quests aren't infinite and it feels like there is a purpose for every one.

I don't know if you played any 3D Zelda games but it seems you're into similar games as I am. If so, you would love Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and (maybe) Skyward Sword (the weakest of the lot imo). They are light RPG games (you don't level up Link apart from health, magic and some minor gear upgrades). Focus is on exploration and puzzle-solving as you work your way through incredibly well-designed dungeons (Stone Tower Temple from Majoras Mask still blows my mind).
