Has anyone ever had strange experiances while playing a game that feel almost paranormal? Like some force beyond your control is effecting how things turn out and that it is set off by something in game that you do or don't do? Those strange phenomenon that always seem to occur?
I'll give you an example:
I play ODST firefight solo quite a bit just to test myself as a shooter player, and I have started to notice a strange occurance. It seems that every single time I'm blessed with miraculous luck and find myself not losing a single life and tearing through enemies wave after wave after wave often reaching about the third or fourth wave and then I eventually die... all my luck seems to run out. Suddenly all my attacks end in humiliating defeat, my tacts haven't altered and the enemies have not wised up. I simply lose my luck and die constantly like some kind of magical seal has been broken and now the blessing I have been given has died. It's for this reason that when I am on a winning streak I'm always nervous because it seems that if I screw up just once then suddenly the miracle has ended.

So that's my gaming superstition, what's yours? What strange occurances have been attributed to a simple incident be it by you the player or the game itself that you frequently try to avoid?

well, this tends to affect my entire life as well as my games, but my luck in general tends to spike and then subsequently fall into a pit so deep I can't begin to wish I could see the bottom, and the duration for which it stays there is dependent on just how amazing that luck spike was.

so... if I ever win the lottery, I'm finding a safe place away from sharp/combustible items for a good month or so.

Up + B. It seemed to work back in the day and even now when I know it does nothing, I still press the two.

I'm speaking of Pokemon, in case you didn't know/never played em. Back in the days of Red and Blue, holding a certain button combination was supposed to increase your chances of catching a pokemon. The combination varied from place to place, but was always Up+B for me.

On a bit of a related note, I used to always physically move the controller when I needed to turn harder or jump higher. Now I don't do it often, if much at all, but I view it now as a form of immersion. Sometimes now that we need to turn the controller to turn or flick to jump, some part of the immersion didn't seem to stay with it for me.

Tabletop Warhammer 40k, never call them missile launchers, it has 'miss' in the name and so they shall.

OP how exactly is that superstition? It is pure luck what you are talking about.
You ever hear of:
'don't step on a crack or you'll fall and break your back'?

This is the same concept except instead it's:
"If you are on a winning streak don't die once or your luck will run out'.

(I suck at coming up with rhymes)

Essentially I am under the conviction that that is what happens and I aim to avoid it happening, hence an unfounded belief that I have seen happen and attempt to avoid is in essence Superstition and borderline paranormal phenomenon.

i was playing pokemon emerald before, and it seems that if you don't mash the A button when your pokemon is confused, you more often than not don't hurt yourself. if you smash it in frustration you always seem to hurt yourself... and more pokemon stuff, when ever i seem to use a potion the opponent gets to hits in a row.

annoying, but i've looked all over the net and no one else has found this... to my knowledge at least.

I have little to none gaming superstitions (and superstitions in general). May have had a few ones, but they were more of an in-jokes. And i can't remember them anyway. So,currently none.

There is one thing - not exactly what you're talking about, more of an observation. Which is - if you jump into online match, and you suck on ludicrous amounts of enemy bullets,it's better to back out of the challenge.

When on a winning streak on a gambling machine in pokemon yellow, do NOT leave the machine, not for a second.

And I have a superstition about games based on movies, they mostly suck.

I get this with Firefight as well, although I don't play it solo really. I'm not quite sure what it is, but either I get on a great roll, earning heaps of points or I fail miserably and get 'naded by a grunt in the cheapest of fashions. There is no real mediocre middle ground for me strangely.

Is this like pressing buttons to increase chances of stuff happening?

In Eve Online, when you are salvaging stuff, it takes a random ammount of time, and people have all these beliefs on how to make it faster etc.. its weird.

Also the most common I've ever seen is this :

I remember once I was playing some sort of game when I was about 7 (I think it was pokemon stadium on the N64) And whenever I wished for a certain outcome of something (can't quite remember) it would happen the way I wanted it to every single time. It freaked the shit out of me.
was it tri-attack causing freeze?
everytime i hoped and prayed for tri-attack to freeze... it did...

OR... it criticalled so it killed em anyway... but meh... luck's luck ^^
