Lets play some Ace Combat and give him flashbacks, oh right that wouldnt be a very smart idea...

I really have no clue, seriosly ace combat would be good because he can relate to it, but as i said above, don't be suprised when he starts crying or goes syco.

Battlefield 1943? That has fighter planes and simple controls. As a Air force bloke he could enjoy that!
I'd go for this or a co-op game such as Left4Dead.

Starcraft. My dad loves that game and is probably better at it than I am. It has a good story and it's easy in the start, so you get to learn it properly. Then it gets harder.

Dude that is AWESOME! Both my parents (Who are also grandparents) are into gaming, my dad loves FPS's and my Mom is hooked on Guitar Hero, (She's already made it to Medium difficulty, go Mom!) so your grandpa wanting to get into gaming is not a big surprise.

Personally I would suggest given your grandpa's background, maybe some flying games like Blue Angels or Hawx, etc. (I don't kow very may flying games) Or maybe go the first person shooter route, its really hard to say but maybe the best bet would be just ask him what he might like. You never know, he might be a closet RPG fan, or adventure game maniac...

Take him to a game shop and let him test drive some stuff, I bet the staff at any store would fall over backwards to help, I know I would! "What's that? Your 83 year old grandpa wants to get into gaming? Ok, lets see here... UNLOCK EVERYTHING! We have some serious demo-ing to do!"

Keep us updated on this, I'd like to hear more. You might even want to talk to the editors, this could make for a really cool story idea...

Well, it was a very interesting experiance. I expected it to be much slower and more difficult.
I knew that my grandfather used to some Risk with us once in a while, so I guessed the Turn Based Strategy idea could work. To my great surprise, it did very well. I presented my grandfather with Civ IV, as you have suggested. I thaught I would then spend eight hours trying to teach the old man about the "Mouse" thingie and how you are not sussposed to actually touch the screen with it, but grandpa learned everything very quickly. I helped him get a little into the game, explained in abstract terms the ideas behind some alien concepts(It turns out some things we kind of take for granted about strategy games actually make no sense at all for a new person). At the end of the day, he found the game to be rather charming, even if he still needed help doing some things. I guessed he had the right mind for strategy like that. Some old people are really intelligent.
Over all I belive this "lesson" went extremely well, much better than I had expected. We will do it again some other day. For now, I am happy that I gave my grandfather a few amusing hours with a new, intriguing hoby in potential.
As for flight simulators, I will wait a little before showing him those. He is a healthy man, but he is also quite old. I kind of doubt that he still has the reflexes and the coordination to do well on such a game, and I don't want to frustrate him to much at this time.

Thank you all very much. You were very helpful.

Stick him on the call of duty series, multiple skill levels, simple tutorials, I know of a few old timers that love those games. Plus they are easy to be drawn into.

EDit: Awwwwwwww, too late :'(
