I know this isn't a game but as seeing we are talking about software I would like to say this:

Windows XP/vista has Starwars: a new hope added into the operating system....although it's just text(ASCII).
Actually, it connects to a server, and is accessible through other OSs.

That Mario only exists because of Popeye. The barrel falling game (original showing Mario, Princess, and Donkey Kong) was originally supposed to be a different color, style, ect. but copyrights fell through at the last moment so Nintendo re-skinned it and created three random characters out of the blue (which today are some of the most iconic in video games). The games success went on to inspire the Mario Bros games.

Mind=Blown

Alright, maybe I am wrong, since you can hack, but just seach "Master Hand" on the SSB wiki, and it says what I was talking about, it is actually a glitch.http://super-smash-bros.wikia.com/wiki/Master_Hand_glitch
you...DO know that Wiki is almost completely user-made right?
that means that ANYONE could make this just to be a douche, and dont tell me that no-one would go to that much trouble to be a douche because *cough**cough*viruses are all man-made*cough**cough*Jack Thompson*hack**wheeze*80%of USA*hack**cough*me making all the "subs"*cough*.
Im sorry, I appear to have caught a cold.
what was I walking about?
Alright, maybe I am wrong. Try it please? If the website link is wrong, and they are messing with me, tell me.

The purpose of the Van on the small piece of land next to the S.S Anne in Pokemon Red and Blue, a secret that I don't know the answer to.

Activating the 'Easter eggs' in Myst 2: Riven in which you had to go to several specific spots in a certain order and click on a specific part of the screen. It's mind-blowing that someone actually managed to figure it out.

I used to play with my dad and he told me that when i was selecting my starting city. very clever sony.

There's a tree in Dark Cloud 2, and its right nostril is currently seeking a tenant.

True story.
You just made my day. I was pleasantly suprised to learn that diamond cards will only fork over a badge when you give them a gift capsule full of diamonds. It's a shame that monster transformation is so useless, because that would be epic.
I wish monster transformations weren't so useless in that game. And Steve (the slingshot) is probably my favorite part of Dark Cloud.

OT:I don't know how well kept this secret is, but if you beat MGS4 under a certain time limit without actually killing anybody, or even being detected, as well as not using any healing items, you unlock the Big Boss emblem which makes all your enemies run in fear of you because you are so badass

Ok, in the start menu go to "Run" and type in telnet.
Type in "o" in telnet and hit enter.
Type in "towel.blinkenlights.nl" and press enter.
Enjoy.
Actually, you probably won't enjoy it, It's slow as all hell.

My example, I've heard stories of how great deus ex is, but I've never heard a word of the plot or any spoilers ever. It's like it's so good, that there is an unspoken code that you don't ruin it for everyone else.
I would guess that the reason you've never seen Deus Ex spoilers is because of the complexity and multiple small variances in the plot, not to mention the multiple endings.
Which is a good thing, as it should be experienced fresh. :D

To echo a previous post, I've never seen the plot details of Shadow of the Colossus, though I have gone out of my way to avoid the plot being spoiled for me.

Your weapons are useless against the Grinning Colossus.

I think it was a fairly well kept secret that Half Life 2: Episode 3 is a project name for another title

Namely Duke Nukem: Forever
Duke Nukem Forever's initials are DNF and DNF stands for Did Not Finish. They never planned on releasing it.

It was in an upstairs room in calm town, im not sure exactly which building I havent played it in over 10 years. I think it was blue.

And that secret room, if you mean the door the soldiers wont let you go through where the submarines are you can only go there in the PC version unfortunately. Its nothing special, it just lets you use the other submarine (midgar sub which i think are green) instead of the red submarine. But still you want to see/get everything in a game.

The Super Mario Referance in Ocarina of Time.
It would take some sort of genious to figure that one out.

Speaking seriously i think that if you just check out the Escapist's own "Easter Egg Quiz" then you'll find all the best hidden secrets (and the not-so-hidden, not-so-secret secrets).
