I don't like him, clearly everyone else is wrong

Mario, Samus and Link, their prime was years ago
Prime Trilogy was released last year and so unintentionally I will make a humorous remark regarding videogame characters being in their prime. Also my opinion trumps all.

I know, after we have Link run around with a talking boat, and a fucking train
Let's have him ride a schizophrenic washing machine...
Change scares me. Also a schizophrenic washing machine raped my dog thus explaining my prejudice towards them.

Only decent LoZ games were on N64 (And I got into the gameboy games a little to be fair)
Mario's prime was back on the NES
Samus - More or less likewise
Things were better in my day, the trees were greener, the internet was faster... We had to trudge 15 miles in the snow, but it was okay cuz a mile wasn't as long as it is nowadays.

Super Smash Brothers is not a viable argument in this...
Smash Bros! My only weakness gargh!

Edit: Oh, and you implied that jumping from nintendo to handheld consoles was a big deal, even though every Nintendo game has about 8 remakes on the DS because they need to make as much use of the touch screen as possible
I know he was simply stating that Zelda games have been featured on a large number of consoles, but it reduces his credibility if I make it sound like his claims are sensationalist.
Thanks to the wonder of ESP, I know present you with the thoughts behind the post (shown in bold). Ever wondered what your verbal jousting opponent is really thinking? Now you can, with ESP.

For the record, Mario, being more recognisable than Link (in that numerous people probably think his name is Zelda due to the games' titles... Lord knows I used to) would be my pick. He's just simply Iconic, the same with Sonic. Regardless of his apparent lapse in quality, when people think videogames, they'll frequently think Sonic or Mario.
Master Chief would work, but he seems too generic to me. Not in regards to personality or anything, more just the fact that wearing a uniform (armour) means that to most people he doesn't really stand apart from the other characters that where the same or similar armour.
On the other hand, a plumber in a land of mushrooms and a blue hedgehog tend to stand out.

NOT Gordon Freeman.

His games are good, he sucks.

You heard me. GORDON FREEMAN SUCKS.

And don't give me, "b-b-b-b-b-ut he's got a crowbar!"

It'd likely Samus Aran.
Indeed he does, he's just as much a "Non-character" as Master Chief or any of those other souless FPS shells (Including Jack from Bioshock).

OP: Mario. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't heard of or seen Mario.

Whatever gains Mario gave the gaming industry were lost with Super Mario Sunshine.

Handheld systems are a diversion that never really have games worth investing more than 100 hours on them.

Might as well say it: Cloud. Final Fantasy 7 was a defining game for the playstation. It won over a HUGE fanbase that originally were nintendo fanboys to a new system. From that date on, nintendo gave a pitiful offering of rpgs, 3rd party support dwindled to a trinkle and the games they got were of questionable quality. SNES era DOMINATED in these areas. Anybody who can't see that the N64 was a failure compared to the SNES is obviously too young and wearing nostalgia colored glasses.

The last two generations haven't really had anything that would make a gaming messiah. Nintendo has gained success off of the low selling price of the wii combined with the worldwide recession making playstation and microsoft systems prohibatively expensive. The playstation 2 dominated because it was the same price as the other systems but with a superior game library and backwards compatability.

So far Link has been on like...5 platforms right?

Yeaaah he must be a messiah of gaming it's not like all those consoles are made by the same compan-OH WAIT
When did I ever say they were made by different companies? What I'm saying is that Link has been in good, successful games for a long, long time. The fact that he is a Nintendo character shouldn't make him less likable. No more than Samus or Mario.
He is only successful because he's being chased by fanboys

You act like those fanboys aren't well earned. They aren't past their prime. In my opinion, Mario and company are still getting better and better. Have you ever heard of Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess? Prime examples of the Nintendo's favorite sons to deliver truly fun and exciting experiences.

OT: Mario because he has instant recognition. Even those who don't play video games or have ever touched a controller know of the name of the fat, Italian plumber. Ask a family member who doesn't play video games to name a video game character and Mario will probably be first name out of their mouth.

Gordon Freeman.

Follow the Freeman, and Ye shall be saved! until you get killed and he roots through your pockets for ammo.

and lo, the chorus of our faith! "Reload, Dr. Freeman!"

For he is not a character, but the combination of the reflections of those who surround him! To Eli, a son! to Kliner, a peer! to Barney, a friend! to Alyx, an awkward love interest! to combine, Death Itself! For it is not he that is the freeman, but us! You are the freeman, and I am the freeman! Let us raise our crowbars in praise, for that which his hand strikes, so strike we all!

Well... you know he did win Gamespot's protagonist of the year award over EVERYONE else.

If you could pick a single videogame character to be the "Messiah" of videogames, who would it be?

A character who you think is the pinnacle of what gaming represents. Maybe the character you consider to be an iconic figure. Maybe just your favorite gaming character in general.

I would say Link. He is such a huge figure in the gaming world, and Ocarina of Time is considered one of the greatest of all time. Link has spanned across several consoles, from the Nintendo to handhelds, all the way up to the Wii. If I had to pick a character to represent the best of what gaming is, it would be Link.
Boo. Good for you having an opinion and all, but boo all the same. My principles require that I say this.

On a related note, I nominate Gordon Freeman, partially for inventing the modern day FPS, partially for being the only truly unhatable character in the entirety of video games, partially because he already has a messianic reputation, and partially because he looks like hugh Laurie. Oh, and because he starred in the greatest game of all time.

Forget the messiah, lets make a whole Video game Pantheon!

God Of war: Kratos (this position is liekly to change, as he, master chief, and any other pointlessly violent video game characters are constantly killing and respawning with one another)

Messenger of the god: Eddie Riggs

Goddess of female game characters:...Princess peach?

Anymore you guys can think off?

Travis Touchdown.
He embodies everything that alot gamers wish they could have or be. He has a light saber (don't you go saying "technicaly it's a beam katana". No, it's a lightsaber) He can beat people up with his amazing wrestling skills, and to top it all off, he's normal. Has part time jobs, plays videogames, that sort of thing. He is the embodyment of gaming.
Maybe.

Sir...I am honored to stand in your presence. May the insight of your words, and the silence of the Freeman spread!

OT: To not show like some sort of fanboy, I would like to put up another vote for Ratchet. Tough, slightly childish, but somewhat mature as well.

It would obviously have to be Souplex from Souplex, Souplex 2: Suplex harder, Souplex 3: Cool but meaningless subtitle, Souplex 4: Developers need drug money, Souplex 5: Huggbees, Souplex 6: Killsplosion, Souplex 7: Awesomegasm, Souplex Kart, and Souplex: the movie: the game.

OT: ok now that thats out of my system, i say that my gaming messiah is my Oblivion character. He strikes judgement with lightning ushered from his fingers and decends from the skys (rooftops) to smite the unclean. Hes also an Argonian, the closest thing i will ever get to Raptor Jesus.
