Now, i don't like to admit addiction of any kind, and i've had a few in my time

I kicked the WoW habit
I took the batteries out of Gameboy and buried the Pokemon
I even bought a different author to Terry Pratchett after 4 years of religiously re-reading his books over and over (there's over 30, so it doesn't wear out)

but now i'm hooked on Garry's Mod, for those of you yet to get hooked, Garry's mod is a Physics sandbox based on the engine used by Valve in most of their games, Half-life, Counterstrike, portal. You can spawn items, NPC's and a number of different veheclies and user-made junk, and use an ever expanding range of tools and options to join them together, want to build a catapult? a few planks of wood and some elastic, want to build a fully fledged Trebuchet? use a rather larger number of planks, beams and welds, and fling cars for miles across the purpose made Uber-maps.

now, this isnt a review, id like to hear of things you guys have made using this truly god-like fun-tastic meta-game

i personally have made hovercraft, balloon suspended orbital cannons, banks of sniper drones, and once at a week long lAN, me and a friend made a multiplayer contest, and each of the 12 of us spent 2 days making an airship with any number of devious weapons as we can conjure to bring the others down (i won, using sets of harpoons and winches to tie the enemy to the ground and then pull them into a venerable position for the banks of thruster mounted WW2 replica bombs [they explode] i downloaded the model for)

sorry for spewing G-mod love all over the place, but tell me... what have you/would you build?

(with the option to mod the engine and whatnot, people have made zombie survival games, 'Saw' (the movie) like trap labryinths and of course the ever popular option of spawning 300 combine versus a million slow zombies and playing THIS IS SPARTA over the top)

Wrong board, but, I think the mods can just move it..

but man, I've made countless ridiculous and 'crazy-awesome' things in that game, almost all un-intentionally hilarious, and mods giving me the ability to have transforming gundams and headcrab canister shells fall form the sky makes it all the better.

I think the craziest thing I've made is this like...APC that I turned into an "armored fortress"...it's a bit hard to explain at the moment. though.

(btw, do the combine have stun sticks? Seriously, I'm getting this mod lol.)

I'm pretty sure that in Half Life 2: Deathmatch, the starting weapon for the Combine side is a 'stun stick' (or tazer). Not sure if this applies to Garry's Mod.

The Headcrab canister bombs are possibly the coolest thing to do in a 'Saw' labrynth, i once set up a map for 5 separate players, restricted to 20 pistol shots and the crowbar (i made most things out of metal or used the unbreakable tool), and it was a blast, in some places the had to choose between sacrificing a helpless teamate (cages that would lift them out of the way of the team... into range of the sniper combine) or spend even more precious time trying to free them... (me listening to them beg and plead...)

it was the most fun for everyone, i had spike traps, log traps, mines, false paths, i split the teams up several times, and had them need to talk to complete puzzles in tandem, and then had them on an automated vehicle (wheels and a winch, nothing special) that they had to protect from rolling explosive barrels or they would have to face my underground zombie maze (i got some of them to scream, it was great)

back to the head-crab canisters... at the very centre i had made a final challenge, a tower, rising up, to allow them to reach the hovercraft and fly to freedom (or so they thought) and as they got closer, i started dropping the canisters into the centre, so as they walked closer, they were watching the place become even more headcrab infested... sheer mind-buggery

in the end the needed to beat me in a hovercraft duel, there were 5 seats on theirs, one driver, 4 possible weapons, but only 3 survived to the end (the rest i told them to turn no-clip on and watch the fun with me) but they blew me out of the sky anyway

i make one of these for the annual Week long LAN we hold each year, the one i'm putting together for this one is for 10 people, in 2 contending teams, where only one can survive

needless to say, i have no life.

Ever played fortress wars?

4 a side, half an hour, restricted strength welds, only wood structures, no turrets or prop cannons (built in weapons for the game, i like to build my own out of spit, prayers and ultra-strong elastic)

the winning strategy seems to be

1: make a very lightweight fortress
2: set about 8 harpoon launchers pointing straight up
3: make a giant pile of explosive barrels in a very fragile wooden cage
4: set one harpoon to shoot directly above the opposite base, and attach it to the explosive cache
5: fire all harpoons
6: lift your fortress out of range, and lift your bomb up and drop it, the fall both breaks cage and detonates barrels
7: clean up grisly mess left by your opposition

its quite fun when you both do this, and have built no weapons to shoot air-to-air, and then have to try and use a pulse rifle and rocket launchers to shoot them down... fun when inebriated

I still want to make a ferris wheel in Gmod. Alas I can't because I really really need to upgrade my computer.

I tried the whole "buy other non-Terry Pratchett" authors thing myself... but once I realised that barely a scant handful of authors are even half as awesome as Terry, I decided not to bother with the rest of the literary world.

But anyway... who's Garry, and why is his mod so good?

Good post.

I'll have to try Garry's mod.

If you're looking for other authors I heartily recommend all three 'Takeshi Kovacs' novels by Richard K. Morgan. They're very violent, there's a lot of drug-use and the sex is pornographic, but Altered Carbon remains one of the best detective novels I've ever read.

The protagonist, Kovacs, appears to be inspired by Max Payne, but that's just my opinion because I can find no references on it. Altered Carbon is in production and set for a movie release in 2009 and it will be directed by James McTeigue, the director of V for Vendetta.

Mark my words and mark them well: Altered Carbon will be the biggest thing since the matrix.

Sweet, I bought Altered Carbon awhile ago but haven't read it yet. It sounds really good, and I'll be looking forward to the movie now.

Garry's Mod looks so cool. I have a crap computer so I've never used it, but I love watching stuff others have done on youtube and such. "Concerned" is funny and very skillfully made. These videos I saw on youtube called Full-Life Consequences are retarded but hilarious.

*sigh*, maybe I'll get a nice new computer one of these days...

What do you need other than the G-Mod and HL2 to run this?
a beast of a machine, the more power you can muster, the more props you can have flying around at any one time, be warned, to the slower machine this is lag-out city, for the kind of stuff my group does making skyscraper sized titans, we use a dedicated server, and even then your graphics card should not be lacking

any decent gaming machine can probably cut it, but a laptop will fail epicly (feel free to dispute me, i love success stories)

Anyway, thanks as well to those book suggestions, i even placed an order for some at the local book store.

Back to G-Mod, on an oceanic level, playing vehicle wars, i made a bottom crawler like a centipede that had one of the most devious weapons ever, it fired a harpoon into the bottom of their vehicle, and one into the bottom, and dragged them under, into the range of the mines i would place near where i anchored them, if they didn't drown first. (i used remote controls. having anchored myself in a pod in a subterranean cave, so very clever of me)

i then adapted this design, using explosive barrels as the body of the 'centipede', fast and quiet, great for slipping unnoticed into the enemy base and coiling around vital supports... with a remote detonator of course, forgetting that the first time was embarrassing.

Meant software wise, do I need CS or anything?

The more Steam-based Valve games you have, the more props you'll be able to use without having to download a million of 'em whenever you go on a server, basically. You can, however, simply choose to just run Garry's Mod with HL2 and it should still work fine.

i love gmod.
I've made a pod-racer,
A floating APC with a top-mounted rotating gunner-pod
A massive contraption in which two giant pillars swing at one another, meeting in the middle, and smash whatever is between them.
My favorite though, was a full gladiatorial coliseum on a floating island, complete with various deathtraps, a high-rollers lounge for watching the fight, and other fun things like that.

Hehe, GMod.

Fun fun fun. I seem to have 2 specialties: Ragdoll Posing and dying. Which is odd, considering I get frustrated easily, like ragdolls do.

BTW, if anyone wants to add me, just pop in Super Jesus into the community search and look for the icon that has a brownish angel thing.
