What a surprise, Any-excuse Chalk finds it amusing, and thinks legitimate concerns are nothing in the face of the chance to maybe inconvenience a handful of pirates.

Nevermind that there's absolutely no way to prove that they actually were pirates.
Nevermind that there are likely now people who've done nothing wrong yet have been screwed out of their entire Steam game collection.

Oh yes, and nevermind that what the GMod guy did is actually more illegal than pirating a game. Seriously Andy, you need to play another tune, this one is getting ooooold, and you're starting to look like a bit of an industry bumlick.
Except they check to see if the account has purchased a copy of the mod. They know whether or not you've purchased it, because you had to purchase it from them.

I like how people keep saying that the "innocent" might get caught up in this, but no one can come up with a scenario that actually demonstrates *how* they might get caught up.

The only people banned were those who voluntarily offered to help improve the game.

The people who just pirated without contributing got away.

So effectively, he only discouraged people who pirated from helping him and others.
No, the only people who were banned pirated the game. Anything else beyond that, whether they use some half-assed altruistic-sounding excuse to try to justify their behavior, is beside the point.

dumb blanket statement
There were 2 types of pirates here:
-People who pirated the game, tried to help the developer and were banned.
-People who pirated the game, did not try to help the developer and were not banned.

Notice something? Like how the above category was punished specifically because they were helping and not because they pirated the game? And that all this bullshit only accomplished converting people from the first to the second and denying themselves(and others) use of the first category?

And if you think that voluntarily working as QA staff for a one time "cost" of $10 is "a half-assed altruistic-sounding excuse" then you need a reality check. Regular QA wouldn't even boot up the game for that money.

Doesn't matter. They all pirated the game, and the only unfortunate aspect is that they couldn't catch them all. I can guarantee people didn't pirate the mod just to do QA on it, so you continue to jump through whatever mental hoops you need to in order to justify their behavior, but if they truly wanted to 'help' the developers they would've purchased the mod in the first place.

How easy is it to obtain this ID number? My chief concern is that if someone figures out a way to get SOMEONE ELSE's number, they could fake the message and get that person banned. For example, I don't own Garry's Mod (yet), so if somebody pretended to be me on the Garry's Mod forums, and claimed to have the error message along with my ID, *I* could get in trouble for it.

This strikes me as a very dangerous form of antipiracy.

P.S. Thanks
The person who generated the information had to willingly submit said information. From a technical standpoint that equates to perfect security while from a practical standpoint (as demonstrated with the reality of this case) such a mechanism is clearly open for exploit. For example, one could simply ask for it.
Actually, your Garry's Mod forum account is connected to your Steam account. (You go through a whole verification process to make sure it's you). So they would have to steal your Steam account to be able to pretend to be you on the Garry's Mod forums.

While possibly amusing from Garry's perspective, I wish he would spend more time working on the game's actual problems than taking time out to pursue his petty agendas.

This accomplishes very little in the overall scheme of things, and Garry himself has admitted the objective of his little stunt was solely to "make fun of pirates," not catch them. For the record, I am a paying customer, unaffected by this.

GMod's updates very often have bugs and errors mixed in, enough that they're often more trouble than they're worth. Recent updates in particular have rendered the basic, default content in the game buggy and flawed. More to the point, no news of upcoming fixes have been released- as is the norm.

Garry has yet to even acknowledge the myriad problems that plague the game, something that might be acceptable if the game were released as free piece of software. As a commercial game, there is, however, a minimum standard of quality to be expected from the developer, which Garry has, time and again, failed to uphold. To add insult to injury, what little information he relays to the community is terse and laced with antagonism. Garry's general demeanor is arrogant and insufferable.

That he spends time tweaking his updates to remove a small number of imbeciles instead of directing his energy to fixing the games' many flaws is exasperating.

...Okay, done venting my spleen. Thanks for reading.

I don't get it, what's stopping the pirates from just downloading it again? I've never played gmod, so I don't know why they couldn't unless you have to be online or something.
