Derpy Hooves, the cross eyed grey pegasus was considered a fan mascot, and made her speaking debut in that AJ episode where she wrecked town. However due to her speaking voice and other things, she was viewed as making fun out special needs people, and the show staff got letters from saddened and angered parents. The most prominent letter writer was Yamino, someone who wrote a comic about transsexual nuns and toilet babies taking the piss of Cathoclism, and since its a religion thats ok. She encouraged others to write articles and wasn't above muting special needs folks who actually liked Derpy and felt censoring her would be effectively shutting them up (irony eh?).
Derpygate was an angry back lash at Hasbro trying to get Derpy back into the show. Hasbro eventually realised the whole thing was massively overblown by people like Yamino, but also realize Derpy's original depiction really did hurt people, so they compromised by making her a more prominent background pony.
Hasbro also started including her on merchandise again, and even gave her cameos in two of the books, but have gone out of there way to avoid mentioning her name, cleverly avoiding anger from either side.
