Everyone has a some sort of unique story about finding a game, enjoying a game, or anything related to games.

My most interesting, or at least my most significant story is my discovery of mass effect and how fun it is. For most of my life, I have been a straight up fps/rts man. All that matters to me was gameplay, story never even came up. However, one of my friends required me to do some petsitting of his cat. And it's an older cat so I had to spend a couple hours there making sure she's okay, so I figured I'd play his games while I waited.

Now I had never even heard of mass effect, so all I saw was a space age shooter. I was getting bored and figured I'd try it out. And I tried it....and ended up playing it nonstop until I beat the game that day. I was hooked. I ended up beating the game twice that week. And this was even before I figured about the side quests.

I needed this game. So I waited til he got home that night, and bought it off him for $40. I beat three more times until mass effect 2 came out. This game really opened my eyes to how much an amazing story can improve a game. Since then, I have loved anything bioware, and continue to seek out games regarded with good story.

So you either read that, and I thank you, or you just skipped down here. Either way, tell me your video game stories. Good, bad, or slightly disturbing, go for it!

I got Deus Ex: Invisible War for free with a shitty bargain bin graphics card. My brother told me not to play it because he read the reviews and found that people said it was a piece of shit. Nonetheless, I kind of liked the neon colors on it, and it seemed kinda interesting.

I was amazed at the RPG/RTS mixed gameplay, the cyberpunk aesthetics, and the intriguing storyline. Then I realized that there was a game before it, and I was introduced to what was quite possibly the best video game story evar.

About five years ago my older brother moved away because he went to university. When he was about my age, he happened to be a kind of a nerd and interested in anything technical. His computer was, at the time, really top-of-the-line stuff. Though he loved his games he had bought during his gaming years at home, he decided to buy a small laptop for schoolwork and leave his own computer here, to me. Before that I mostly played GTA2 on his Playstation and later Halo on the original Xbox.
Dear Lord my mind expanded and head exploded of sheer joy when I heard that he was leaving the game collection that I had some much admired to me. There were, actually still is, such awesome games like Half life 1, Red faction and SWAT 4. Though most of the games he owned are now sold, I will always remember that summer when all I did was play through his epic collection of awesome games, with his awesome computer.

Come to think of it, he introduced me to games. And did it well.

In 1990 at the age of 6 I emigrated from Leeds, England to Summerland (near Vancouver), Canada. There had been games systems in my house before this, one of those old consoles with pong, tennis, squash played on a rotary controller, but either due to the quality of the systems, or my age I never got heavily into them.

In Canada a neighbour had an NES with a selection of games, including The Legend of Zelda. From the first moment I was enthralled. On my return to England later that year I got my own NES for Christmas. That was basically the start of my journey into gaming, progressing onto a Commodore 64, SNES, PC, Playstation, Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, etc etc. Basically, that exposure defined my life for the next 10 years.

The last ten years have been defined by many different things, but gaming has really come back into my life recently.

Before I was around 13 years old, I was more into strategy games and the only FPS games I was into was Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Battlefield 1942. I had my first experiences with First Person Shooters in those two games, and I preferred to stick with them rather than try out other mainstream FPS games like Halo. In those games, I thought the sole mechanics of FPS games was to capture points, class-based combat teams, turrets and vehicles. For the entirety of my pre-teen life, I've yet to experience a video game with a proper well-written storyline and memorable characters and events.

My family was going to my cousin's house for dinner (it was my cousin's birthday) one night when I was 14, and I didn't really have anything to do there. Fortunately, my cousin had an PlayStation 3. Though I was more of a PC gamer, I had experience with the PlayStation and didn't have anything else better to do. The only game he had that caught my interest was this game called "Call of Duty 4". It looked promising, so I tried it.

Needless to say, I was stunned. Up until then, I never knew games could have a great storyline and the feel of a movie, and the effects and scripted events was nothing that I've ever seen before. Additionally, I never thought an FPS could include levels completely devoid of combat. It was a real change to the common low-brow shooters I've played, and it opened me up to a new world of FPS gaming and exposed to me the true potential of video games as an art form.

I started to get into mainstream FPS games after that.
