Ok, discuss without bad language. But in the UK they are hosting a gay olympics, am sure you can guess what the deciding issues are. So I think why? Nothing stopping gay people from trying for the normal Olympics or paralypics. So why is there this special segregation? If there was a straight person Olympics there would be uproar from gay people.

I guess from my thoughts are that black people fought against segregation and wanted to be treated equal. An now it seems other groups see segregation as showing how special they are above others. Gay people want to be equal, to be seen as what they do and whom they sleep with is not whom they are. But there are others they want to make the fact they are gay a major issue as to whom they are as a person.

I think this is counter productive. Being black doesnt make you different as does being gay. Olympics is about sport, who is the best regardless of who you are, your colour and your sexuality. So when are we going to start staying that this segregation needs to stopped. Whether its the gay olympics or Gaymercon or whatever. It just seems like double standard as you cant have a straight person olympics, and also insults black people for fighting against segregation and now other groups use segregation as a badge of honor.

Gay olympics? Are these challenges in being gay, or doing gay things?

Most of the answers to your questions can be found in the FAQ page for the Gay Games (as they're called).

http://gaygamesblog.blogspot.co.uk/p/faq.html

Oh, and straight people are allowed to take part, too.

I was going to say inb4 gay stereotype jokes but I see I am already too late.

Actually, I think this is even more accurate than the "real" Olympics. What I read it's about personal bests without the need of being in some kind of international ranking and an atmosphere where homosexuality is not mocked. Kind of the point of the original Greek Olympics since the participants there were, after all, amateur homosexuals.

In athletics, medals are given out for the most flamboyant running style.
I'm almost frightened to see their version of pole vaulting.
Indeed.

And then there's breast-stroke...
The shot put is already practically a gay hand swish.

Seems like more of an 'amateur', for lack of a better term, Olympics.

Gay Games FAQ said:
Anyone can participate, regardless of ability, age, sexual orientation, race, gender, nationality, political or religious beliefs, ethnic origins, or HIV status. Athletes represent their cities and not their countries.
Also, they've been around since 1968. They seem to be offering a more..open forum for competition.

OT: Doesn't seem bad to me, the name could probably use a change as I imagine it inspires this kind of reaction a-lot.

I guess this would make wrestling a bit awkward

Well, considering how many flippin' years general society spend killing or shunning people with sexual preferences deviating from the cultural norm, why would it be such a shocker that the gay cultural movement would rather just set itself apart from it as much as possible?

Dem darn ungrateful homosexuals, eh?

That's a woman?!

OT: I must admit, it would be fun to have an Olympics that's all about being really happy and joyful.

Well, this "Gay Games" stuff seems to be more open than the "real" Olympics so... Muh, whatever keeps 'em happy! I can certainly see the need to "make some noise" about gender issues still, huge parts of the world and lots of people in countries where one would expect better still have some pretty disgusting views on homosexuality and such...

Nothing against gays or anything but why do they need it? they want to segregate themselves willingly when this is what they ahve been complaining to begin with? so why do it?
then again, let them do it if they want, noones forcing us to watch anyway. i successfully avoided royal marriage and ill avoid this.

Once again, a thread on this forum that displays exactly WHY gays feel the need to "segregate" themselves from other folks.

Stay classy, Escapist posters.

I think it's amazing that everyone gets so bewildered and flustered over this without bothering to pay attention at all. The FAQ section someone linked to answers quite a few questions pretty neatly:

Games for gay people? Why not Games for Jews and Arabs, while you?re at it?

-The Maccabiah Games, intended for Jews around the world, have been held since 1932
-The Pan Arab Games have been held since 1953

We are all familiar with sports events on geographical lines. But there are many sports events that cater to other kinds of communities.

-Political, like the Commonwealth Games or the Games of the Small States of Europe
-Ethnic, like the Maccabiah
-Linguistic, like the Francophone Games or the Lusophony Games
-Professional, like the World Police and Fire Games or the Military Games or the World Medical and Health Games
-Age, like the World Masters Games or the Children's Games
-Disability status, like the Special Olympics or Paralympic Games
Plus as they say on the website, the competition is open to everyone with an estimated 10% of participants being straight. So if you're going to call it segregation then sit down, shut the fuck up and actually research the thing you're going to ***** about.

Again. This is exactly why they want their own Olympics. They were outcasts from society from the beginning. Certainly, things are slowly changing, but after being dismissed from general society for so long, it's little wonder why they'd want to separate themselves.

What else, really? Should they be grateful because society doesn't openly hate them anymore? Better late than never?

What, like synchronised buttsex?
The 100m RuPaul's Drag-Race?
Other stereotypically gay things as sport puns?

Exactly.
And it isn't even separate from 'normal' culture, because you can go, regardless of sexual orientation.
