How about this - put away the word "gay" and use the words "p***" or "n*****" in the same sentence as the same sort of synonym. Get it?
Thankyou, this is what I was going to say.

Fuck context, fuck intent. Homosexuals are still 100% referred to as gay. people using the word gay to mean bad is completely associated with that fact.

As for the "I picked it up in the school yard" argument... really? Well if it was okay within a group of children then it must still be fine in the adult word... yeah, sure...

Also, everyone that's saying "yeah it's commonly used through out the whole adult world" are stupid. It's used on the internet and within groups of people that I usually associate with me potentially getting beaten up by if I anger them.

Eh. I see nothing wrong with Wootini's response. His/her job is to respond whenever an LGBT issue arises in the games industry. If he/she didn't respond, the community over at Gaygamer.net would be disappointed and annoyed.

By equating "gay space marines" with something wrong with the games industry, it might be inferred by some that Denby thinks that there is something wrong with gay people in general. It was a stupid comment. He easily could have said homoerotic, which seems more accurate for what he was trying to say and, furthermore, it's less offensive.

Also, isn't the thread title a little inflammatory not to mention exaggeratory?

I can't even side with the "victims" anymore. Everyone is too god damn sensitive and expecting everyone to tread lightly.

Grow some thicker skin, you're really not doing the Gay community justice if you're getting bent out of shape for one dumb line about some game interview. Had it been something like what Mel Gibson did sure but this is so weak.

When I read the first article about the quote it was accompanied by a picture of the overly-super-macho Marcus Phoenix/Fenix/Foenix/WTF-ever and his BFF "WHERE'S MY WIFE?"-guy. That alone was enough to suggest the quote was poking fun at all the veiled possibly-intentional-possibly-not semi-homo-eroticism that exists in games where overly-macho space marines are involved.

When the quote was first featured the specific term was also 'placed in single quotes' which can give the idea it's meant to be something deeper than we flash-bam-react associate it as.

Funny who when you're actually gay you tend to facepalm much more about others that are than over what straight people do or say (unless you're a bleeding heart, into politics or some other etc, etc, etc).

Harmless comment, I'd say. I somehow doubt he was taking some kind of jab at the homosexual community.

Maybe it's just me, but homoerotic space marines sounds more like targeting the homosexual community than saying gay space marines. ...I suppose that sounds kind of silly, especially considering the "official" definitions, but 'gay' has just become slang. I'll admit I say it and I heavily dislike homophobes.

I'm a long time reader of Gaygamer.net and I must say, I read that article and even I didn't get why he got so upset.
Must have been in a very bad mood that day.

They got an Australian ad taking off for having aboriginals eating chicken, sorry but if they arent' allowed to eat chicken then isn't that racist on your behalf America? Or on Red Faces on Hey Hey it's Saturday the American took offense to some guys imitating the Jackson Five (colour and all)...

Anyway, lighten up!

Well, the shooter genre lately does seem to be just a glorification of manhood, with practically NO females present (seriously, recall one female character from CoD 4. Yes, the helicopter pilot that appears for 20 seconds, then crashes and needs a man to sweep her away in his muscular arms. And that's it, she's the only one. Bad Company 2 doesn't even have that). And the shooting, the phallic imagery, the territorial threat displays, the grunting and chest-bumping, etc.

It's pure testosterone. A celebration of all things penis. It doesn't make them homosexual, but "hetero" would assume that there are many dissimilar qualities represented. There aren't.

I don't think it was meant as a homophobic comment, it's just that there really is an obsession with hypermasculine games. Nobody makes gender-neutral shooters like Half-Life anymore.

Pretty much this. But how about on top of the Gay community growing thicker skin, so does every other race? You've got Gay people marching for Gay rights, blacks yelling racism, white's yelling reverse racism etc etc.

It all boils down to the "Look at me miss! I want attention!" or the "Please miss, He started it!" schoolboy mentality and it seems that people in general need to grow out of that phase.

I for one am sick of all the tip-toeing around that we have to do with our language, heaven forbid that someone complains that we aren't being politically correct.

I disagree. Homoeroticism, to me, is a term describing the same-sex sexual attraction primarily in art, not especially in real life. It is quite appropriate to describe videogame characters. Furthermore, homoeroticism does not exclusively belong to describing homosexuals. Wrestling could be said to be a little bit homoerotic, but unless the wrestlers started copulating, you really couldn't call it gay or homosexual.

These days, "gay" has almost no connection with homosexuals.

Full circle the word has come!
Crap.

The way a small demographic uses a word does not make it common parlance. I'll take the word of someone like Merriam-Webster over the urban fucking dictionary.

People using "gay" as a synonym for bad, broken, unwanted, useless can go to hell. I hope the first pizza-faced little basement dwelling puke who coined it fucking rots. Mkay?

Right now I am going to go on associating that word usage with ignorant little children/high school tossers and thus, remove them from my personal radar.
Personally I like the old definition meaning happy, colourfull. And I tend to use that when taking the piss out of overzealous politically correct idiots.

So have a gay time =)

Bloody political correctness gone mad. I try not to use the word anymore myself, but the simple fact is that a large majority of people about 25 years or younger use it all the time. Language evolves and 'gay' no longer just applies to people of the homosexual persuasion.

And that is fine. Merriam-Webster and Oxford both agree with you. Hooray for common parlance.

You call it "growing a thicker skin". I think more of "stop being a fucking entitlement syndromed ass and try not to be a dick to other people". What is the necessity to pick words that are offensive or problematic to people - like the "n" word - when you only argument comes down to "because **I** want to and fuck you? So what if it upsets or bothers you..what about MEMEMEMEME"

Unless you have been on the other end of hateful intent (and I suspect that most of you have not) then you do not have one tiny clue of what the fuck you are talking about in terms of what language actually means to people.

And despite what people here say, gay as a synonym for bad is NOT in wide or common use, your friends might do it but most people do not.

Maybe Wootini should play some of those space-marine games sometime. They all seem to be dominated by the kind of men who enjoy showering together, so it's not exactly a reach.

Merriam and Webster are two different people, first of all. It's hyphenated because of that.
Secondly, do you know what the difference between the Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries are?

One--Oxford--has actual criteria for considering something a word. The other just adds definitions as people come up with them--which makes it no different from UrbanDictionary at all.

Irony: It's a *****, isn't it?

You know, I'm gay myself, and I have a lot of gay friends, almost all of whom use "gay" pejoratively when no other word seems to suffice. I do the same thing.

Your opinions on what is or isn't offensive do not in any way represent the views of the gay community at large, much less every gay person on Earth. Just thought you should know.

But they are gay. Alone in space. No girls for comfort, they only have each other, yeah behind the scenes they're gay. So what's the problem?

I know, but there is only a short time before the meaning of the word changes again, also for Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries. And the usage of the word has changed to meaning bad, crap, stupid etc, albeit unofficaly. The offical language always lags behind.

Anyway, the original meaning of the word was quick or sudden.

From Merriam-Webster:
Origin of GAY
Middle English, from Anglo-French gai, of Germanic origin; akin to Old High German gāhi quick, sudden
First Known Use: 14th century

I do believe that is the most compelling point in this thread.
