Word on the street is that Gearbox is considering a switch to the new CryEngine in order to make sure the game is up to speed with the latest technology.

Seriously? Wow, they've been down that road with virtually every major engine since Quake 1.

Seems pointless to me. Why fix what isn't - I assume - broken? DNF has been in development for, arguably, too long. Gearbox have sunk money and time into it rather than other products, ones which are perhaps more deserving (At this point, anyway) of those resources. Changing engine this late in the game would be ridiculous.

P.S. Ubisoft Montreal's Dunia engine > CryEngine.

My surprise == non-existent

Same thing happened to Borderlands, it got delayed one year because they wanted to fine-tune the graphical style.
When it came out, it was awesome.

These guys know what they're doing,
the Duke will come,
and we shall have fun,
period.

It's obviously a joke considering how close they are to release and that a new engine was the supposed reason for previous delays.

This is why you should just keep your release date to yourself until the game goes gold.

Yes, you'll still be disappointed that you didn't make your intended mark for having the game finished and our the door. But you won't have to stand up and apologize to legions of disappointed fans on top of that if you don't toss out release dates when you aren't 100% sure you can make them.
The problem is that by holding on to your release date, you lose out on marketing (the mags and blogs have nothing to report besides "it's coming!" so they are less likely to report at all) and pre-orders (people will say "well, it could be next year for all I know, so I'll pre-order Crysis 2 instead") and so on.

While I think it's admirable that Gearbox is finally putting this game out, I also think this game looks extraordinarily average and I wish they would put more of their efforts into another Borderlands game. Oh well, I'm sure another Borderlands will come, I'll just be patient.

Editors tools? For PC users? Hmm...as prolific as I was a map maker for Duke 3D I'm willing to go out on a limb and give this game my gut reaction GOTY if I get good mod tools.

Yes, it was a joke. But I am pleased, with all due respect and apologies to Gearbox, that DNF was pushed back. Duke Nukem Forever is so much better as a legend than it will be as a game; no matter how good the game is (and to be honest, I don't expect it to be much more than run-of-the-mill) there's just no way it will give us as much fun as we've had with this beyond-insane development cycle. If and when DNF does actually come out, it will be a loss for us all.
