They're American? It thought they were on a totally different planet.

wow well i guess someone really doesn't like it huh?! tbh it's a fun game and while the story and characters are much much larger than life that is what appeals to me. Me and my friend co-op'd through the first one loads of times and it was great.

I'm not gonna defend the characters as great examples of literature but i will argue that they're fun. Why does a game now have to be written by Byron and animated by Da Vinci to be classed as 'Good'.

Hey hows about everyone stops bitching and do one of two things; play the game or don't play the game! Oh my god! could it really be that simple? why yes, yes it could. I really wish threads like these didn't exist, not because of the question, but because of all the belly-achers it drudges up. Like Harhol, I mean seriously dude, stop, and chill out, there is nothing wrong with the game, it is fun. and that is what gaming is about; having fun and being entertained. The game doesn't have to impress you or expand your concept of the universe, it is a video game! a video game that you don't have to play!
I believe this thread was made by someone who likes the games. Just because people don't like the game is no reason to freak out, they're not asking you to not like it, so don't ask them to like it.

I didn't get drawn in enough to actually interest me enough on the second one. Sure I'll pick it up eventually, maybe when used copies drop below thirty, but other than that, I wasn't really impressed.

That' about right. I like this series and honestly(I think it's my inner fanboy) I don't see how anyone can HATE the game with so much anger as I have been seeing. I can understand it might not work for you, but judging a game simply by its storyline is pretty stupid.

The only people who enjoy Gears of War are fascists and serial killers.
I think people who don't like GeoW are really confusing people who deserve nothing in life but a *facepalm*.

^ My opinion.

Hell, i'm mature enough not to give a shit that it's immature.

You can stand on the corner and scream about it's childishness all you want, i'll be inside playing the damn game and having a blast.

I think we can spot the winner here.
What about those who are mature enough to give a shit about paying money for a game which is enjoyable?

Point taken. But i would argue that the winner is still the one having fun.

Wait, but you can also have fun playing other games.

However, I do want to point out to my fellow man that back in the NES days games didn't need stories to be awesome. Proof: Super Mario Bros. didn't have a real story.

I support the GeoW fans even though I am not a fan of the games (Mainly because they scare the shit out of me)

Fuck that piece of crap.
I'm sick of all my friends mistaking this game for god, I found it to be rather mediocre, not bad, just incredibly average and ovverated

I'm hopeful for Gears of war 2, but I didn't fancy the first very much because I felt the online play lacked a certain finesse to it. What I really don't understand is the hate that surrounds the game, I could understand someone liking or disliking it, but not hating it. I mean, I usually reserve hate for people who murder my relatives, and relations, not for a game that simply wasn't my "Cup -o- Tea". Its really baffling how someone can have an opinion of a game other then I liked it or disliked it, and the occasional I like it a little more than usual. In all seriousness I didn't like MGS3 I thought it was simply plainly not up to par with most games, but I don't hate it, I simply just don't play it.

I've always wondered. If you were to try to bait an actual troll (as in the large lumbering mythical creature), what would you use?

Well, I suppose I'm going by an Elder Scrolls idea of a troll with that description. To bait Warcraft trolls you'd just need some drugs 'voodoo'.

LOVE IT!

Why?

Like I've said before:

A while back there was a thread that got me thinking about _Gears of War_ [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/6.60206.466653]. I realized that while everyone makes fun of it for it's oh-so-big shoulder armor, I found the armor ridiculous, but amazing. And then I realized why: the armor in _Gears of War_ reminds me of John Boorman's wonderfully anachronistic/inaccurate _Excalibur_; in fact, thinking back on it now, some of the Locust have head shapes that remind me of the knights in that movie when the knights have their plate helms off and just the chain mail coifs on.

There were quite a few things that struck me as 'medieval' (in a pop culture stereotypes sense of the word) about _Gears of War_ beyond the armor. Take the weapons: the main rifle is called a 'Lancer' and the grenades look like spiked ball-and-chain flails; both of these make melee a much more important, visceral part of the game experience than smacking someone with a rifle butt or tagging them with a Plasma grenade. As far as I know, it's also the only recent shooter besides _Turok_ to include the Bow as a weapon. Then there is the setting: humanity bunkered up on the Jacinto Plateau, while outside of that 'citadel' the Stranded live in a state of perpetual siege. Invaders that can show up almost anywhere with no notice, with Locust and their Emergence Holes taking the place of Vikings and their Longboats. Even the color scheme choice of browns and grays that was raked over the coals for being so drab I found kind of beautiful in the way one would find an abandoned stone castle ruin beautiful.

The decision to look to the medieval period for inspiration seem even stronger in the sequel. Players will now be able to carry around the most explicit medieval allusion for the game yet: a screenshot of a Locust that fights with not only a shield but a ball-and-chain melee weapon [http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/878/878566p1.html]. And a modular one at that: check out the removable clips to make the weapon as long or short as desired. Or to hold your keys.

Even if _Gears of War_ isn't an 'arty' game, is it time to acknowledge that there's a lot more to it than popular opinion gives it credit for? Is it video game snobbery that has caused people to talk and talk and talk about this almost two year-old game without realizing that it has more in common with the Warhammer 40K universe than teh Haloez? What changes about the 'games are art' debate when a guy called Cliffy B decides that what all those people on Xbox Live really want is the Dark Ages* re-imagined as a futuristic shooter?

It doesn't look great to me. But it looks like it could be fun. I'll probably play it.

Does that count as middle ground?
