You know how I'd combat piracy, if I were a game developer? I'd make a separate version of the game, that looked the same but was actually riddled with spyware and keyloggers (this wouldn't even be too difficult, just embed them into a dummy copy of the game), and spam the torrent sites with copies of THAT, while releasing the actual game without those glitches anywhere (and no DRM, either).
The malware wouldn't even be located anywhere in the official game's code, so there would be literally no way for legitimate customers to be affected. Once word got out, people would be scared to download the torrents for fear of catching the baited version, and anyone who complained on message boards would be painting a target on their face.
