Transformers porn (don't ask)
It's been done. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgyMBbJvoqo] (don't worry, it's a comedy clip ;))

But yeah, I consider geeks to be people who are really into a non-mainstream hobby (cosplay video games etc), while nerds are into things most people wouldn't consider to be fun at all, mostly academic stuff (maths, science etc)
I feel like my mind has just been violated. I can never look at those Transformer toys the same way.

I always saw nerds as the smart ones while geeks were the ones who just had a strong interest in something. Hence the term sports geek

I thought they were the same thing. I don't really know. I just looked them up in online dictionary and they're basically the same.

Again, dunno. Wouldn't really classify myself as either, really. Then again, I tend not to label people, ha ha.

Love that video by the way, haven't ever seen it, so thanks for sharing it.

OT: I've always held basically the same, except that a Nerd was a geek with intellect, and possibly (or likely) an outcast for it.

I guess that makes me a bit of both by your definition? Or maybe just a wannabe..

Most definitely.

Really the true creator of the x-men is Chris Claremont. Before him they weren't popular and didn't have any of the more popular characters (Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus etc).

Whoa there. I'm not calling anyone anything - I'm merely relaying what was explained by the panel host. although in hindsight, I probably should've used his example of Star Trek instead...

Besides, to my understanding a "weeaboo" (man... that just seems wrong for no reason) is an extreme variant of a Japanophile (like how the "Narutard" I think it's called is a hardcore Naruto fanboy/girl).

You may not agree, and that's cool, but don't shoot the messenger.

I...but...wha...I DON'T EVEN KNOW! I mean I understand rule 34 but seriously?
I think it's less "rule 34" more "we're doing a Transformers parody, and one of our characters wants to get back at another, whom is a massive slut. Why not a literal sex bomb?". Also, the fact that their robot "genitals" are screw and screwdriver makes the joke even funnier in English :p

Like I said in the opening, the panel host happened to bring up a strong correlation between sports geeks (to use your term) and, say, video game geeks.

I won't bore you with the details... unless you want to hear them, of course.

I've wondered what the difference is before and even after reading all this I'm none the wiser.

From my experience both terms are used similarly in common usage regardless of their original meaning, whatever that is. That said the word geek seems to have almost vanished from usage altogether. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say the word geek without being "ironic".

I thought of nerds as intellectuals and people that get straight A's in school
Whereas geeks were people that took immense interest in computer technology eg games, fandoms, or even things like role playing eg D&D

This seems fitting and fairly accurately depicts my opinion on the subject
I saw the title of the thread and immediately thought of this:

I love that while the definitions of "nerd" and "geek" differ, dork is usually always the bottom rung.

Sorry, I only skimmed the post.

But if you take that example out of its context, it's a perfect description of a weeaboo (with FF7 being Japanese and whatnot). Although, to be fair, the geek one would probably be a pretty valid description of a weeaboo too.

Who's shooting anyone? Where's this defensiveness coming from?

Here is the thing: I am not concerned with whether or not anyone is a geek or a nerd by admission or which is which. Not important to me. I am annoyed that LIKING ANYTHING that they like is perceived as being a geek or nerd as well. Liking a thing - a show, a comic, a game, etc. - does not automatically mean this, and shame on anyone who says different.

My own definition was that Nerds are more "socially awkward", whereas Geeks are more people who are obsessive about their hobbies or interests.

I think I'll go with Geek, I'm shy but I've never had a hard time interacting with others

Hmm... I guess you're right. Like I said, I probably should have used something more "domestic" like Star Trek or Star Wars.

You've never heard the phrase "don't shoot the messenger"? In short, I'm simply relaying what was told to me, as I certainly didn't come up with the examples myself.

And I'm getting defensive since, in essence, it sounded like you were trying to put words in my mouth:

What the OP described as a nerd: a weeaboo
and while I do apologize if my wording was not as neutral as I thought, that's definitely not the case. Hell, I'm a geek something terrible myself [http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x326/SageRuffin/Katsucon%2017/SageWinduwithSaber-1.jpg]; me insulting others over essentially the same thing would be rather petty of me, don't you think?

I'm not saying that either is a bad thing, if that's what you're wondering. I'm simply sharing an experience.

Again, you don't have to agree, but please don't shoot the messenger.

There is only one difference OP. Geeks smell slightly better than Nerds. aside from that, we're alike.
EDIT: My affiliation.
I'm a nerd. my hygiene is terrible. I smell like a cross between wet dog and hot pockets.

I assumed that Nerds have a broader base; i.e. they're fans of, say, "video games" or "board games" or whatever, while Geeks are extremely obsessive about a single topic, say, "World of Warcraft." It's a specific vs. broad thing.

And I think you can't really overlook the idea that Nerd has a connotation of being generally academic, while Geek has a connotation of being just dorky. One is a statement of intelligence and sometimes social competence, while the other is all about social competence and doesn't comment on the intellect.

Never heard of that term Sports geek. But makes sense. I have heard: Anime Geek, Gun Geek, Car Geek, History Nerd, Science nerd, comic geek... etc.

Myself... i'm a Dork. Socially accepted, goofy, well liked, and walks the line of nerd/geek. Or at least that is the definition multiple girlfriends give me. (Usually get called a dork when i do something goofy/cute)
