Assassins Creed, an athletic Italian woman assassin, could there be a better game, conversely if Velvet Assassin was about a man it would lose its major selling point.

Two that could expand the discussion value:

If it happened to Halo then I'd expect the Nintendo fanboys to be crying "Metroid Rip-off" in the forums a lot, so I'll leave that one alone.

Rapelay.

All of a sudden it doesn't seem quite so controversial, does it? Bloody double standards.

Well, now I've got that out of the way.

Bioshock would have a whole new level of philosophy behind it if you were a female instead of a male, the whole concept of women's rights in those days would be one focal point there'd also be the whole thing with the Little Sisters which suddenly takes on a darker turn when you choose to murder them instead of saving them because when you're a male it strikes me as fatherly love to some extent, so I guess it can work as motherly love as well, which kind of opens up a massive can of worms if you think about it long enough, I mean some people could easily draw some parallels with abortion for one thing which only goes deeper into the rabbit hole.

The idea of being a woman in Rapture would also make certain scenes have more impact. The whole fight with Dr. Steinman ("What do I do with this one Aphrodite? SHE. WON'T. STAY. STILL!") would be more personal as he is mutilating "people" of the same sex that you are and I'd expect some people would get a chill down their spines when they hear him shout "SHE'S UGLY! UGLY! UUUUGGLLYYY!"

But maybe that's just me.

That is something to consider and fume about. Rapelay wouldn't have had the impact if it was men being raped. You can see that in rape laws when they are depicted as women's rights as opposed to people's rights. *sigh* But that is another can of worms. -_-

Oooooh, that is an interesting twist with Bioshock. I can see it being a bit more chilling if the squick factor shared a bit more relation to your protagonist.

Link as a girl could work. Already seen a few pictures floating around with that idea.

I wonder what would change in Half-Life if Gordon Freeman wasn't the "The One Free Man." The Alex relationship in Half-Life 2 and her episodes might be awkward or just straight lesbian, unless they made her Eli Vance's son. Then that would make all of Alex's actions seem more chivalrous than just bad-ass.

That outfit would have made more sense anyway. Christ I thought he was a chick all game long.

No More Heroes:

Supergeek Trisha Touchdown orders a beam sword online and gets invited to try and take down the top ten assassins in the world by a mysterious man she has the hots for.

Personally I think that would actually make the main character more humorous, and also make sense of all the shopping.

Alex Mason from BlOps -> Alexi Mason: no change
Ramirez -> Ramirez: no change
'Delta'-> 'Delta': Massive change, become a Big Sister, not do any of the storyline, etc
Rico -> Rochelle: no change except aesthetics

in conclusion: most modern action(especially shooters) games have little to no effect

What about Left 4 Dead... You can probably see where I'm going with this... Hopefully.
Betty White as Bill? OMG YES.

Also, BG&E would be pretty cool. A male Jade would be just too good to be true, with his pleasant demeanor, love of photography, and taking care of all those adorable little children in the orphanage...
But that would also beg the question of Pey'J as Auntie pigtits, and I am not so keen on that, honestly.

And I'm waiting for Ubisoft to make an Assassin's Creed where the main character is a babe; And not Ezio.
That would be hilarious. Imagine Desmond going into that animus thingy and then discovering he's suddenly a woman...
Que humorous scene of Desmond exiting the animus whilst reaching for breasts he no longer has.

I always liked Tim Buckley's take on Assasin's Creed 3

...That's hot.

OT: Aside from the obligatory CoD suggestion, I'd have to go with Deus Ex. Just like Half-Life, an extreme badass with superhuman powers who isn't sexualized is very intriguing.

Let's see:
Mirror's Edge: Faith becomes... Grant? No change otherwise, no real romantic connections, Jackknife would have been just another punk you "dealt with" in the past, you'd still have to save your sister, Mercury is your "bro", and Celeste gets a much more "The Chick" role.

Alan Wake? Allysa Wake? Plenty of female writers out there so nothing odd, and there'd be nothing emasculating if her husband were captured by an evil unspeakable mysterious dark force of doom and confusion. So yeah, no bigs there.

You know what would be interesting? Kane & Lynch female characters. I think the challenge alone would be interesting. Let's see the developer come up with a pair of completely hate-able and utterly irredeemable female characters.
