I think it's for real. Soap operas are actually that lame, as far as I can tell. My mom watches them all the time, and when she claims the TV to watch all of the recorded ones from the week, they are really that ridiculous.

My mom watches that shit. It is the only one she watches, thankfully. But it is truly painful to watch. Especially whenever some of it takes place in the hospital, because I get annoyed at how completely inaccurate it is and that it takes itself seriously.
