Generally reviled endings that you liked

I hope everyone will have the common courtesy to hide their spoilers.

Anyway, I didn't mind the ending to Borderlands.

It gets a lot of flak for kinda farting in people's face with the whole treasure thing, but that was the point, wasn't it? The whole thing's more about the journey than the destination. This Guardian Angel (whom I suspected from the start to be some kind of AI) only wants you at the Vault so you can kill the Destroyer, who tries to come out every 200 years to fuck everyone's shit up. That's the only thing that's in the Vault. This Guardian Angel turns out to be a satellite with a designation number that translates to "Angel" in 1337-speek. She actually apologizes to you for leading you on (did everyone miss this?) and says Tannis will give you a big wad of cash for the Vault Key, which she does.

Yeah, it wasn't what people expected, but it actually made more sense and was far more intriguing than a big stupid pirate treasure/dragon hoard.

It wasn't a perfect ending by any means.
- Boss was a pushover.
- It was a bit short and sudden, especially compared to the time it takes you to get there.
- Not much explanation is given about the nature and origin of the Destroyer or the Angel. I hope we get some more on that in the sequel.
- The Claptrap Ninja thing was kinda stupid, but hey.

But I liked it. It had a cool vibe. I finished the end boss quite easily with my awesome weapons, why would I bawl over not getting any even better ones? The guns are the means.

Also, the ending credits had a cool song. I like that. (*shudders at the memory of DA's 30 Seconds To Mars*)

So, any endings that everyone hates but you dig? Like, I dunno, Ghost & Goblins? Tetris? And more importantly, of course: why?

NOTE: the forum pooped and I needed like four million attempts to post this thread, and in the meantime, a similar thread, but only about Mass Effect 3, had been created, so this is about other games. I'd prefer it if the whole Bioware-thing didn't find its way in here. There's enough of that already.

Fallout 3 pre broken steel, I never traveled with companions so it was just me and lyons at the end.

The 2008 Prince of Persia.

A lot of people hated the ending because in the final five minutes the protagonist turns around and undoes everything that you've been working toward for the entire game. What's more, he does it to save a character that nobody really liked much.

Personally, I kinda liked the sentiment. "The world can save itself, not my problem. I'm saving the lady."

The fact that Fallout: New Vegas had a definitive end that you couldn't play past (not the actual ending slideshow).

I had absolutely no problem with this and I actually encourage it, as it adds more closure to the story (y'know, 'cause it has ended) and allowed Obsidian to create more ending combinatons for all the characters, factions and locations without having to worry about actually putting them in the game.

Fallout: New Vegas, I fucking love that ending. Even if they try to paint Mr House as the bad guy the whole game when he's really one of the best guys to have around (in my opinion)

Well it's got the opposite "problem" to ME3's ending, in that many people said they wanted their previous choices to add up into this sort of unique ending for their own Shep. Not go into A B C mode

NV does this to the letter. All your previous choices carry over into the final sequence at Hoover Dam and end with your previously chosen faction(s) winning. Plus all the sidequests (completed or no) get all tied up into the epilogue.

Give the people what they want and they still ***** at you. Oh the life of a games dev

Personally, I have no problem with "Endingtron 3000's" That's why I was confused as to why Deus Ex 3's ending was so wildly disliked by so many people. It had good endings, but the way in which they were presented to you made it bad?

Wat?

Oh and this new font is... New. I don't loike change!

I can't really speak to terrible game endings that I liked, as I generally love all the celebrated endings and hate all the reviled ones, but if I can branch out into other media...

As I'd only fairly recently lost my Dad, I suppose that...despite being an atheist, or highly skeptical agnostic at best...I was more vulnerable than most to concepts of an afterlife. So I found the HIGHLY emotional/character based ending to provide more than ample closure, and as I'd long since grown sick of the show's inveterate chain jerking and endless parade of red herrings as pertained to the mysteries, I was glad to see them chucked aside like the irritating dross that they were.

I thought cutting out on the "Don't Stop" in Midnight Train was artistically daring (and also, I love that song), and Sopranos was always going to be a hard show to offer up closure for as it was aggressively unsentimental. While I certainly UNDERSTAND the fury of those who felt a cut to black was little more than an enormous cop out, it at least allowed for POSITIVE speculation, as opposed to trying to wrap one's head around a bad or nonsensical ending.

Me too -
felt like dying completed the story, and brought the game full circle in a life-death thingy.

I quite liked the Fable 2 ending.
The fact that Lucien was such a pushover helped his character; if he'd been an epic badass, it wouldn't have worked story-wise.

The creators of Tetris really dropped the ball on the ending on the game. Nothing made sense and all the game's general themes were thrown out the window.

I demand they change the ending to appeal to my taste!!!

OT: Apparently there are quite a few people who think the ending to MGS4 was kinda stupid. I guess I can probably understand as:

Big Boss does just suddenly appear and give out a massive plot dump

I personally really liked it myself. It wrapped up some loose ends and ended with a beautiful song.
