Sure, they're not that advanced yet because they're basically version 1.0 .

But guys, we have replicators. From star trek. This is amazing.

We'll only really have replicators once we get the ability to recycle the printing material/objects (at least in my opinion). That would trigger such a massive revolution and I really hope it happens.

Anyway, 2014 is supposed to be a really good year to buy 3D printers as a load of patents expire. So that may be the year I finally invest in one...

When I read the title I thought we were talking Replicators from Stargate and I was gettings ready to kiss my ass goodbye... :p

Though I can't help but feel it won't be long before something with this technology goes too far or some seriously heavy rules get put in place to stop it making a real difference to the world.

You and me both man, i was already dusting off the old *KILL IT WITH FIREEE* picture.

The problem with this technologies though, is that it will probably be harder for the government to tax, thus be made illegal.

Or just get really really expensive.

Damn little buggers...

But more on topic... dunno, doesn't really sound tasty

Didn't replicators basically make stuff out of thin air? (Yes yes, I know it was more complicated than that.) 3d printers still need material to be put in first before anything can be made.

Count me in the "I thought you were talking about the creepy-crawly-killy kind" as well. Well, it is good to hear that instead of lego robots trying to eradicate us we'll instead get printed food. Yay science?

I wouldn't exactly call 3D printing food "synthesizing" it. But Maybe someday we'll have 3D printers that can construct and destruct molecules at a rapid enough pace to truly be considered replicators. Time will tell.

That was my first thought as well, then I was kind of disappointed :(

I mean come on!

Who wouldn't want this lil guy as a pet?

And on the plus side they evolve into some good lookin men and women :p
Dude. Those are creepy-crawly-killy arachnophobia-inducing lego robots from outer space that want to break us down to our base materials and use us for parts. I'm pretty sure that declassifies it from pet status for at least a few of us.

Don't think fire worked on them, a P90 or Spaz 12, then blowing up a ship, then a dedicated ARG energy weapon and then... um didn't they need a Wraith to disable them as well?

Didn't replicators basically make stuff out of thin air?
The ones in Star Trek made matter out of energy, they were basically modified transporters but instead of dis integrating a target and then re integrating it another location they would reintegrate an object from a stored pattern of the object.

We don't. We have printers that can be designed to make very limited and specific foods.

They actually had packs of generic organic molecules that the replicators drew from to make the foods and drinks.

You can see them in the Voyager episode where the ship gets infected with the Macrovirus, and the virus originally uses the packs to breed.

God I am a nerd :(
You're not a nerd because you watch Voyager, or that you remember that ships have organic material in them.

You ARE a nerd if have memorized whole chunks of the ship beyond the bridge, the med-bay, engineering, the holodeck, the recreation/eating area, and that people have personal quarters.

Not quite, yes Voyager did use Bio neural gel packs but they were not specifically for use within the replicator systems, they were used throughout the vessel as a faster more efficient replacement for the more traditional isolinear chips / circuits.

The Enterprise D had replicators but didn't have any of the bio neural gel packs since Voyager was one of the first ships to use them

I beg to differ. Only a nerd would tolerate that tripe beyond the 2nd or 3rd season when we realised the writers were totally incompetent.

Don't worry, I'll get them up and eating a planet near you before long.
So far mine can only replicate if I feed them the correct chemicals.
