Ah well Microsoft does something right. This should reduce the number of hackers, and people throwing around racial abuse on vice chat.

Finally some good publicity for them, it may be too little, too late though.
So saying they will steal games from people is good publicity? Funny, I don't normally consider that a good thing myself. Act like an ass and sure they should be able to block your MP playing, but they have no right to steal games you've paid money for.

Wait? can you even buy a second hand XBone?
I'm speculating there, I can't see how the console can be permanently hard locked to a single live account but who knows?

Just read a good mini summary of potential bans from Yagharek on Neogaf;
It wouldn't be impossible. If each console had a unique ID built into the hardware kind of like a MAC address they could potentially link a console to an account.

Whether or not they would is another question.

If they did you'd probably get people selling their accounts along with the console which would in theory include all games purchased by the previous owner. This would be surely banned by Microsoft, though I don't know how they'd police it.

Same as steam?
You don't get banned from steam unless you do some serious stuff. Like illegal shit, such as scamming, hacking accounts, or threaten people. If you're just rude online or cheat in online games, you may get VAC banned. That just means you can't play on VAC protected servers. You can still play the games on unprotected servers, and doesn't affect the functionality of your steam account in any other way. You'll never lose your game library for cheating.
Much of a muchness to be honest. The point is the service provider can block access to a library of games which you purchased, possibly at the same price as a physical game you could have owned, for a reason of their choosing. The fact that Valve have a lot of common sense when it comes to exercising this power is irrelevant, they shouldn't have it at all. As far as Microsoft, hacking is about the only thing I've heard of people being banned for. Certainly not anything as mild screaming '******' in place of a fullstop.

I'm just very very concerned about the use of the word 'licences'. Jim's right, the fucking bastards are trying to alter the idea of ownership to suit them and their needs.
Microsoft, why do you keep doing breathtakingly dumb shit?

I wonder if it really is that dumb.

All it says to me is that we who frequent gaming forums, we who follow E3 closely are not who Microsoft are targeting, and they know the audience they want doesn't hear any of this, so it really doesn't matter what they say.

No, just no. How the hell can they even do that? And, more worryingly, how can anyone actually defend this? Are you people not reading? They aren't kicking you off that game, they aren't kicking you off of online MP, they are seizing all of the games you have on the console. EVERY BLOODY ONE! single player, local multi-player, anything where you press buttons and stuff happens, gone. Congratulations, you now own a $500 blu-ray cablebox. Because you said something mean over the damn internet.

You know, the real funny part is that actual hackers, as in people who are really good at finding and messing with software exploits, they will probably dance all over this shit. The regular people who at worst called someone a "dick muncher" or named themselves "BallsMcSlurp", and who more frequently will be banned because some 8 year old filed a complaint because you were better than them at cod and were therefore obviously haxxing, they're the only ones who will actually suffer from this.

Also, for people defending this, did "hacker' suddenly become the gamer equivalent of terrorist; a magic word a large, powerful authority can toss around when they want support for whatever horrible policy they're implementing? Because i remember pirates being the games-industry terrorist answer for any and all drm and service based business models. "Of course they have to monitor you, cuz pirates" "of course simcity should be always-online only, cuz pirates" "Of course the Xbox1 needs to call home every day and get permission to keep working, and you can't trade and sell your games to whoever you want, and Microsoft can straight steal your games, which are now licenses, whenever they want or whenever an XBL moderator can't be assed to pay attention to who they're banning, cuz pirates and hackers".

Isn't this a good thing? I'd rather get rid of people hacking games than well... keeping them(?)

The only way this can go wrong is if people are getting banned for no reason, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Doesn't mean it's not dumb, just that they target people who, as they said, don't look at details.

Isn't this exactly the same with Steam and Origin? I don't see what's bad about it. It should help prevent hacking in multiplayer games and hopefully make the community more civil seeing as there is an actual risk in being an asshole.
I can trust Valve with my life, EA and Microsoft? Not so much.

While it's harsh to lose all the games you have, you have to be a real jerk to get banned. Don't be immature and play nice, it's not that hard.

Not really anything wrong with theft?
I'm in two minds about the issue. On the one hand, it feels a hell of a lot like theft and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. On the other hand, you don't usually enter a contract with a thief, laying out the terms and conditions under which they will steal your stuff, under normal circumstances.

I'm not supporting the idea, I just don't think the two (theft and ban) are so directly comparable.

EDIT - I guess what I basically mean is "If you don't like the terms and conditions, don't enter the contract." It's up to Microsoft to place to goal posts, but it's up to you as to whether or not you'll play ball.

Buying a console and a game should not be seen as a contract. Either way, I won't be in the Xbone ecosystem.

Oh man, this is delicious news. Xbox live has always been a hive of scum and villainy... and now microsoft will be enforcing their idea of cleaning it up with an account ban that turns a $500 console into a useless brick? They've already alienated a large portion of their more informed customers... this could wind up banning an even larger portion of their... less informed customers. But at least they'll get their 500 bucks out of each of em before they swear off Microsoft for life.

...by the way, that's the difference between a steam/origin/uplay ban and an xbone ban. Your PC can access other services, or even physical discs going all the way back to DOS games, for gaming. The xbone is wholly reliant on Microsoft's servers being online, and your account with them being in good standing, to avoid being nothing more than a faster version of your smart TV's options (assuming you don't have one of those HDTVs with no online features. I seem to remember those existing at one point).

If you plan on buying an Xbox One, make sure that you're a good little boy or girl. Otherwise mean ol' uncle Microsoft is taking away your library of games and won't give them back.
I might be alone here but......I play games and I cant really see no reason to not be a good little boy. SO all of this is not an issue for me.

So it is now even more like steam, but I have to pay 500 dollars to use it. I'll stick with my PC and getting the PS4.

What kind of a poll is this? It would be like saying "If I break the law and murder someone, will I not be able to see my kids in prison". What did you really expect? What, you intend to do dumbass things that would get you banned?
Oh, like the guy who was banned from Xbox Live because they said he had "homophobic slurs" in his profile? He said he was from "Gayland".

He WAS from Gayland. There IS a Gayland. The friggin' MAYOR of Gayland called Xbox to let them know that, yes, the guy was from Gayland, so stop banning him from your service.

Plenty of people get banned by mistake, or for stupid reasons. They are a marginal percentage, of course, but they don't strip away ALL THE GAMES you've legally purchased.

Apparently, if you share your Xbox account with a family member, and THEY screw up, YOU get the ban and lose your games because of them.

Just seems like a disaster ready to happen.
