So I was on Twitter, hoping to catch a break from all the drama surrounding the battles between Xbox One and PlayStation 4, when I saw this picture linked in a tweet(of course it was re-tweeted by Jim Sterling as well).

This comes from a user asking Xbox Support about what should happen if their Xbox Live account gets banned. If you plan on buying an Xbox One, make sure that you're a good little boy or girl. Otherwise mean ol' uncle Microsoft is taking away your library of games and won't give them back.

Thoughts? It really is looking like Microsoft do not actually want their Xbox division to live any longer. Maybe the rumors about them finally selling the Xbox name due to investor pressure is true, and they're trying to take the name down out of spite before that happens. That's the only reason I could think of for why things keep being one PR nightmare after another for them.

Hey, this may end up being a beneficial thing i some way.

With that type of sword hanging over their heads, maybe it will dramatically cut back on the number of immature knuckle heads screaming "******" into their headsets?

You do know that the only way to get banned on xbox live right now is for hacking right? So as long as you are not going around hacking in games or moding your system then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Hey on the plus side it might reduce the number of these assholes in multiplayer games.

Isn't this exactly the same with Steam and Origin? I don't see what's bad about it. It should help prevent hacking in multiplayer games and hopefully make the community more civil seeing as there is an actual risk in being an asshole.

Then there is also the point they didn't say what is necessary for a ban. It most likely wont be for small stuff like occasional swearing on xbox live but might happen if you act like a total ass to many people and it takes a significant reason (death threats or something).

They're going to need all the customers they can get. Banning anyone seems dangerous for them at this point.

Also, OP, it's only a battle if there is actually a fight going on. I'd hardly call PS4 vs. Xbone a battle.

As people have said the only possible way to get banned from Xbox live is to hack it, in fact I believe if you get banned for being an asshole online you only get multiplayer privileges revoked, but I'm not sure. I do fully expect Jim Sterling to make this the subject of one of his "Jimquisitions" and blow it out of proportion since he is imcapable of coming up with any original ideas.

I'm not 100% sure, but after looking online everything I found for Steam says you can still play your games but just can't play online multiplayer or access the store anymore. Origin I couldn't find any concrete info on, because searches get flooded with stories and forum posts about when EA was threatening bans for people who wanted refunds from SimCity. If I'm wrong about this and someone can link a source, I'd appreciate letting me know though.

It's worse on Origin because forum ban = account ban, on Steam bans are only usually handed out for large amounts of scamming or if you try a chargeback.

I know it's kinda harsh, but I like it. That's the best incentive to make people behave.

Not a chance in hell and you know it.

Incidentally, I'm sure I don't have to explain how this practice is just blatant theft.

Ah well Microsoft does something right. This should reduce the number of hackers, and people throwing around racial abuse on vice chat.

Finally some good publicity for them, it may be too little, too late though.

Banning people from their games doesn't even seem legal, as much as some people deserve it, it is a very shaky business practice.

It seems that Microsoft are trying to dig a big enough hole that they hope to eventually find diamonds at the bottom.

I've never been sanctioned in my rough decade of XBLA membership (which ended last year), but have known plenty who have and whilst many did break the TOS there were a couple I felt were very harshly treated and one in particular I still doubt was guilty of anything at all. The system would have to be pretty much infallible before I thought this blocking of all games was a good and reasonable idea.

Imagine of you were falsely banned or bought a second hand console that had previously been modified and flagged by MS's system yet the ban only comes into force well after it had been sold effecting innocents who can least of all afford it. There is absolutely no appeal process available aside from posting in the correct section of the awful Xbox forums, and even then that is subject to moderator approval leaving many genuine requests floundering in an inaccessible and costly void.

Fucking awful.

Only to find a primordial ooze and a blast of never-ending magma that will consume them all. And the white-haired man with the yellow classy car will not be able to save them.

Dunno how it is with Origin, but on Steam, if you get VAC banned, all it means is that you can't play on VAC-secured servers anymore. Single-player and unsecured servers are fair game.
