Guys, it's free stuff. If you don't like the low price of entry, that's fine. But don't make us/Lockerdome out to be monsters. We are offering you prizes because you like games, and we want to increase the number of people who follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook. There is no malicious intent here. It's a simple transaction that you are free to participate in or not.
I have zero problem with that. The Escapist wants to up it's notability and I love The Escapist so I would love to help.

The problem I have (and the problem that others seem to just be hand waving away as "no big deal") is that I don't know what this company wants with my log-in information. This can all be brought down as a failure to communicate.

I specified in my first post that "I don't know how often they take advantage of that for there is no way in hell that I'm giving a marketing company permission to do that so maybe someone who was brave/desperate enough to enter a contest can enlighten you on that part..."

According to some in this thread, that permission is basically just so that they can see that I liked/followed you. However, that's not what the permission on LockerDome says. The permission says that I give them permission to post whatever to my wall. What exactly does that mean? I skimmed through the site looking for clarification but there is none.

Is it exactly what others have said (basically it's one post that says I like The Escapist)? Is it a Facebook game type thing where my friends are going to be told once every few hours of how much I love The Escapist? Can they post whatever the hell they want like how much tippy2k2 loves the brand new product that they are releasing that I've never actually even heard of?

I feel like if we were actually told what that meant, you'd have a lot less mutiny in the ranks here. I feel like people are bringing up a very real concern (what can LocerDome do with our personal social media profiles?) and it's being hand-waved away as no big deal (or some have gone so far as to call us greedy/ungrateful for questioning it).

You are correct that we can just not enter, which is what I'm planning on doing (unless we do get clarification) but then no one wins; you don't get the advertisement you wish and I walk away with a bitter taste of thinking that my favorite website is willing to sell me off to the highest bidder for a slim chance to win something. Granted I could have been more clear with my concerns but I have brought this same issue up in the other DigitalLocker Giveaway threads and no one ever addresses my concerns.

Just my two (or twenty five with how long that freaking post was :D) cents worth. Do with it what you will.

I just jump through their hoops for the contest entries, then once they're counted I delete the posts they ask me to make and then undo/revoke their access.

Ah, more contests that are impossible to participate in.

But since Lockerdome is a monster, that would make you guilty by association wouldn't it? And there is maliciuos intent here, that malicious intent is to spam our accounts with advertisement and use us as "zombie computers" to spread the lockerdome virus.
I know your making money on this, but how much money is worth fucking over your users?

I like how the feedback in this thread has been almost completely unanimous.
I hope The Escapist takes some of it on board.
The feedback on the advertisement "news" have been unanimous as well. there was only one instance where i saw them do something, and that was changing the title of article to state its actually and advertisement.

Thanks but no thanks. Fuck Lockerdome and screw having all that spam on every single one of my social media sites just to get lottery-level chances at winning a game copy. Even if I was to go for a contest like I intended the last time you ran one of these, the Lockerdome interface is god awful and the conditions of the contest are unclear as hell.

So is the feedback that everyone is providing. Heck, that's probably worth more than a few free Twitter/Facebook adverts.
^So much this. And no, it's not free stuff. Greg even acknowledges it in the same post saying it's a transaction. It's ads for you and GameFront and a copy of the game for two random people in a giant pool. Which might even be fine, if you didn't use Lockerdome.

Still can't enter these competitions since I will not use my social media accounts and it won't accept any details I have with the "Email" method. Please stop using this stupid company Escapist and bring competitions back in house. 95% of this site's visitors cannot or will not enter.

How do these contests work? I'm almost afraid to register because I don't know how my information will be used.
You register using a Facebook account or Twitter and Lockerdome has your permission to post to your wall/feed.

I don't know how often they take advantage of that for there is no way in hell that I'm giving a marketing company permission to do that so maybe someone who was brave/desperate enough to enter a contest can enlighten you on that part...

As per my usual comment; I love you Escapist but you've gotta ditch this company. There's no way in hell I'm giving them permission to do that for a slim chance to get some free stuff.
Thanks.

I saw that you can register with email. I wonder what that does? Perhaps you need to forward email to X amount of people to get more entries?
Do not give them your email. You will get mail every time someone comments on the damn thing. It isn't worth it.

But no, I honestly don't care enough to have my friends spammed and myself to win a free copy of a game. That may or not be good.
This. I did it once with the Diablo Vs Infamous thing and regretted it every day. Every time someone commented on the thing, I'd get a Gmail notification on my phone. No thanks, I'll just buy a copy.

No. I don't use Facebook and I don't use Twitter. I am not keen on giving a third party access to personal information when only the Escapist has reasonable expectations to know how I am (especially since I'm a subscriber.)

This is a subscriber saying no here, and it's becoming more and more frustrating to see that this is how The Escapist does their CONtests.

Stahp, Escapist.. Stahp.

You contradict yourself there, Greg. You say there is no malicious intent, but then also say you want more people to follow you on Facebook/Twitter. Sounds pretty malicious to me.

It kind of does make you into monsters. It certainly doesn't make The Escapist look good.

A website wants more exposure?

So malicious....

No, I was referring to the wanting us to use Facebook and Twitter part of it. That's truly evil.

It doesn't even make sense for the website - surely they would want us visiting The Escapist website, and not Facebook and Twitter?

Wanting increased exposure on the world's most popular social networks is "truly evil" and "makes [the Escapist] look like monsters"?

Nothing in the history of the known universe has ever been more incorrect than this is.

Are you seriously not understanding my hyperbole, even after I outright explained it?

My contention is that Facebook and Twitter are evil. Therefore, The Escapist are evil monsters for wanted their users to be subjected to evil.

Your hyperbole is awful to the point of nonsense.

Me, I would never enter any sort of contest unless:
1. There was at least a fair chance of actually winning something, if not a near certainty. If I'm going to give up my personal information for anything I damn well better get something for it besides aggravation.
2. I would not be required to give any personal information until AFTER I won. The fact that people who don't win have to give up their personal information whether they win or not is B.S., and it clearly shows what they are really after.
3. The personal information necessary would be limited to my address at the most. They have to get the prize to me somehow and I can live with getting junk mail, but getting harassing phone calls and spam on my email and social network accounts? No damn way.

Naturally, this means I have never actually entered a contest before.

But if there was a fair chance of winning then everyone would enter, then were would be a minuscule one. :)

Edit: I didn't win. :(
But congratulations to Derek Bowen and Kyle Ferguson, nonetheless.
