Usually, I'm into happy music (a la Matt & Kim), comedies, and lighthearted games, but in the past few days, I've been in the mood for some more somber media. In this vein, I ask all the Escapees to give their favorite sad movies, music and games. I guess I'll start off.

Movie: Grave of the Fireflies. Probably my favorite animated feature of all time, this film portrays the decay of war as seen by a fourteen year old boy and his four year old sister. The pacing is slow, but this serves well to let you reflect on their situation.

Music: Wilco - I Am Trying To Break Your Heart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlxH9-TYseY
And more recently, The Deep Dark Woods - All the Money I Had is Gone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwWG2qmmroI

Games: Dear Esther. This is probably the most obvious example, but as it piqued my interest in the "genre" I feel like it deserves a place.

If you really want to get sad, watch the WW2 in HD series. It can be hard to hold back the sadness in some parts.

Sad movie: The Road.

Music:
Not much music really gets to me, but this one does it every time.

Game: Heavy Rain. I don't remember the exact ending I got, but I do remember it being a real downer.

Music: 'tis very moving. Very soft.

Movie: First time I watched it, Click. Yeah, Adam Sandler, but damn it got to me. It felt pretty relateable.

I came into this thread to mention Grave of the Fireflies, only to see I've been ninja'd by the OP himself. Bah humbug, I guess My Immortal by Evanscence is quite a sad song.

Movies- MoonChild. That movied, while really good, is about as sad as 'Luck of the Fryish' and 'Jurassic Bark' mixed together with a touch of 'Old Yeller' sprinkled on top.

Anime- Neon Genesis Evangelion and Elfen Lied are two of the saddest animes that I've seen so far.

It's hard to get into, I suppose, I watched the first 5-6 episodes and still wasn't exactly sure what's going on. The first episode itself has not more than ten lines of dialogue. However it gets extremely sad and depressing as it progresses. And since it starts in a not-pretty future, that means a lot.

Short films:
Well, not exactly "sad" but close enough. Maybe. It's worth watching at any rate. Right now.

EDIT: Also, you can have a look here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.346988-Recommendation-for-dark-gritty-depressing-films] for more movie recommendations

Well, I don't know about sad media but whenever I go out to the street and pass by the centre of the city, which is where all the bars are I get really depressed, mostly because I know the horrible stuff that's happening inside and can't do anything about it, you can't really get more depressed that knowing there's something wrong that should be fixed and you can't do anything, anything at all to help those people I haven't gone through that area in over a week yet I can't stop thinking about it,I feel like I'm going to go insane here.

Go watch "The Green Mile", right now.

You have no soul if you do not feel anything from that movie. It practically is paid in tears.

The only consolation is that... well, when it opens with the kid narrating his own date of death, you kinda know how it's gonna go down... :( *sniff*

Damned good film... even more so because the voice actress for Setsuko was only five or six at the time... talk about tough gig... v_v

OT: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0... I recommend that series a lot. Tolerate Yuuki's happy-go-luckiness and it's pretty damn gut-wrenching.

Song-wise, this comes to mind:

If you read up on Isaac Slade's reasoning behind the lyrics, it makes it even more poignant...

Sad movie - Ninja'd by one of the Escapees on here. Click.

Sad game: Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. That game was just a huge kick to the emotional gonads.

Despite it being Blue Man Group and therefore generally fun music, this one always puts me in a mellow mood

Music: Well somebody already brought up Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt, so I'll guess I'll chuck in these:

Films: Oh good god so many, but Brokeback Mountain, Once upon a Time in America, Oldboy and Hunger (2008) immediately spring to mind.

Games: Limbo and Metal Gear Solid (if a bit melodramatic :3)

Play Mother 3 for GBA. Even if you don't know any Japanese. No crying until the end. Unless, y'know, it does make you cry beforehand. And unless you have a heart of stone encased in a layer of ice, it probably will.
