I would say definitely either COD4 or Bioshock (I won't mention orange box because everyone seems to have already drilled that through your head far enough)

If your looking to mix in some variety you can try Street Fighter 4, Civilization: revolution, and Dead Rising.

If you want some fun offline Multiplayer games I would suggest Rockband 1 or 2 and if you have friends who see themselves as movie buffs try one of the scene it? games (seriously those can get very competitive)

And If you want some downloadable games I say castle crashers and Castlevania:SOTN which are well worth the money.

I haven't seen any Bioshock recommendations yet, so Bioshock first, then Orange Box. Orange Box is really the best value you will find for the system.
Bioshock is great but I have it for PC. Same with Orange Box. I am now thinking of getting:

Mass Effect
Fallout 3
Timeshift
Castle Crashers
Banjo Nuts blah blah
Assassins Creed
Maybe Gears of War & L4D (Will have to get Dad to get them, I'm not 18 yet)

Not getting AITD, I heard it's crap. But I might get Resi 5 (Fingers crossed)

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot Dead Rising. I played it at my friends house. AMAZING GAME!!

Mass Effect

The one and most important game that exists.

Other than that, any of the games the previous people have mentioned.

Left4Dead is awesome, I love that game but as soon as I get 53,595 kills I think I'm going to put it down for a while. It could use more maps. For whatever reason I've found the l4d community to be the coolest I've found. I think something about the game requires coop play so people work as a team.

GOW 2 is good but it's buggy. I can't seem to make it through a horde session (50 levels) without lag, levitating 3' in the air and getting stuck, or not picking things up when I tell it to. It sucks when I die and it's not my fault. If I die it should be because I sucked, not because my guy was stuck floating in the air unable to move.

Personally, I don't like Half life from the orange box. I have no patience for games that require me to figure out where to walk in a mind numbing retracing of my steps again and again. I like action, not searching for doors and switches. However, portal was worth the $20 by itself.

I have COD 4 ready to play but I'm getting my L4D kills first.

Must-haves are Bioshock, Gears of War(get #2 if you like it) and The Orange Box.

IMPORTANT: Do not get Left 4 Dead unless you have played it before and are sure you love it. If you want zombies, get CoD5. L4D is clunky, non-atmosphereic and overall not scary.

Mass Effect is for hardcores, with much of the game being cutscenes and the controls being slow. The game is worth it if you can stay with it for a while, though.

Don't forget your MS Points and good luck =D

Oh I forgot!! =( Battlefield: Bad Company. No 360 is complete without it. Rent it if you have to, but give it a play.

It all depends on what kind of games you like, if you like Action adventure, there is a number to choose from like Assassins Creed, GTA 4 or the upcoming Resident Evil 5. If you like First Person Shooters then Far Cry 2, The Orange Box and or Gears of War 2. If you like RPG's, then Lost Odessey and Eternal Sonata are the best or you could wait for FF XIII, but my personal favourite is Mass Effect which the best RPG out, that or Fable 2, but on the other hand there is Fallout 3 which rocks! For sport, i would have to go with Skate 2, Strategy for me would include all the command and conquer games and if you want the best XBLA i would have to go with Castle Crashers, it is the best game on the Marketplace ever.

Hope this has been helpful, add me online when you get your 360

HMMMM

Ninja Gaiden 2
Beautiful Katamari
+1 for PDZ and Timeshift
Burnout Paradise
Rainbow six Vegas 1 or 2
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon (slow but gets good)
GoW 1 and 2
Halo 3
Streetfighter 4
dont bother with orange box or l4d, both PC counterparts have a FAR superior community
F.E.A.R - for the online- still has a good community
PGR 3 or 4
Guitar Hero 3
Sega Megadrive collection
Sega Supertars tennis
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Farcry (great community)
Burning BLade (if thats what its called)
Warriors Orochi

The list is endless for me but give any of the above a go

I loved Splinter Cell for GC. Although that level with the lockpicking was annoying. As soon as you put the pick in the door, 10,000 people with machine guns came round the corner. Damn that game was hard.
