Orange Box is an awesome bargain at $20, just for TF2. Mass Effect has been my favorite 360 game yet, so pick it up. Download Catan off of Live as well as Braid. And Bioshock, don't forget Bioshock...

At the bare minimum you need Left 4 Dead and Rock Band/Guitar Hero. That'll entertain just about any group.

Assassin's Creed, Crackdown, Gears 1/2, Saint's Row 1/2, Skate 1/2, Fallout 3, Castle Crashers, Bionic Commando, N+, The Orange Box, CoD4/5, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, Dead Rising. Just some games I personally enjoyed enormously.

Also, don't get Far Cry 2. It's not worth the trouble.

None of you knaves have suggested Stranglehold yet, so I will. Get it, particularly if you hate watermelons. Also, it's a cover-using third-person shooter with a bullet time mechanic which is geared not to slaughtering everything unfairly but to slaughtering everything unfairly VERY FAST and stylistically. Seriously, you get more "style points" for a kill if it is a fancy "walk-up-the-body-to-headshot" or a "drop landscape on and shoot while falling" kill. It's a John Woo Hong Kong Blood Opera with so much self-parody you can't look at it straight.

Also, MASS EFFECT, but you knew that.

Here are the four undisputably best games on 360 (scratching out those I haven't played)
-Fallout 3 (no contest)
-Mass Effect (but get used to all the talking if you don't like it)
-Saints Row 2 (or GTA4... but I like the former better because of the lack of Fat-Fuck cousins)
-Lost Planet (you'll see why)
although these are for solo play

For online/multiplayer:
-LEFT 4 DEAD!!!!!!!!!!

There's a covering system in that game?

I were just flying all over the place shooting at people.
Insanely enough, yes. If you suck it flipping around like a lemur ON METH WITH GUNS, you can hide behind things. Some hiding is pretty much mandatory on higher difficulties.

I don't have a 360 but I always wanted to try Crackdown (is that on PC yet?).

I'll get behind Mass Effect. It was amazing on the PC.

Well, Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead come to mind straight away.

GTA IV is overated, but it's still very good. Fable II didn't deserve alot of it's hate. It's good if you get immersed in it, but it's still quite short. Burnout: Paradise is a must buy in my opinion. The only racing game on the 360 right now thats actually different than "Cross that line. First.".

People shouldn't name games that belong on the PC! Wich would be: Left 4 Dead, The Orange Box, Oblivion and Fallout 3. All of those definatly belong to the PC, mostly for modability and other user created content (think TF2 maps). Doesn't matter that much for Bioshock, but the PC version is usually cheaper, so if your PC can handle that go for the PC version. But especially the Orange Box, why would anyone buy that for the 360??

Now for 360 games:
Saints Row 2 (the PC version has shitty controlls and apperant performance issues) or GTA4. Get Saints Row 2 if you want pure unbriddled hilarious FUN. If you want a soap opera, get GTA4 :p
Gears of War 1 and 2, well no need for an explanation.
Mass Effect
Lost Planet
Ninja Gaiden 2
Bioshock (taking the above into account)

Personally?

Orange Box - great value.
Bioshock - wonderful game. Little replay-ability, but that didn't stop me from playing through at least four times. Atmosphere is wonderful.
Fallout 3 - playable for hours upon hours upon days without touching the main story.
Call of Duty 4 - great for multiplayer, really...
Left 4 Dead - again, very fun in multiplayer.
Gears of War / Gears of War 2 - A lot of people shun this game for being... Well, I really don't know. The fact still remains that it's a superb game/games, and deserves being played.
