I'd reccomend Zelda Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid 3, if by any chance you haven't played either of them before on other consoles.

Other than that... Fire Emblem and any of the Mario titles are where it's at!

Also... check out older DS games too if you haven't got one already... there are so many for so cheap it's great!

And it makes me grin pretty much every time I pick it up.
Is that because it is a Pikachu... With nipples!?

But not only nipples... spy nipples that can take pictures of you... IN 3D!!

(Yes... nipples somehow attached to his neck/chin... his body is a bit weird!)

Just make sure the games have extremely long story modes or a high level of replayability, then they will see you though bus and train journeys for years to come.

Fire Emblem: Awakening, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask are my current 3DS favorites. Just overall really good games.

The 3DS-version of Super Street Fighter IV is also worth a look if you like fighting games and have someone to play them with.

If you haven't played many of the Castlevania games, I recommend Soul of Darkness off Nintendo's eShop. It's a linear Castlevania clone, but I found it very enjoyable.

Also there's the Shantae series which I've been working through. The first one was a Game Boy Color game that came out after the Game Boy Advanced was released, so it's considered a hidden gem.

I purchased the system for Luigi's Mansion. I had tried it in the store and found it a charming little game.

Being a rather old school gamer, I also picked up the Game & Watch simulators from their DSi line. Hopefully they'll make more of these. The best, in my opinion, of what they currently have is Mario's Cement Factory, but the other games have their charms. I hope they release Greenhouse at some point. There are the Gameboy Galleries on the Virtual Console, but I'd rather have the full simulator.

Hello fellow Escapists, I will be purchasing a 3DS by the end of this week, and I've been looking for a good starting game but I can't figure out what I should get.

Help a brother out?
First off, get the XL version if you can swing the extra dollars.

Second, if you like to draw or want to learn how to draw, think about getting Art Academy 3D. I can't recommend it enough. I am not an artist, but it is making me feel like, with time put in, I can become an artist. Don't get the DS version as it doesn't let you export your drawings. You can also purchase additional lessons, but the card has a pile of them.

If you are just interested in games, I find myself enjoying 9.9.9. quite a bit. The brain age and picross games are fun as well.

I've avoided traditional games, as I'm sure the rest of the posters on the escapist will fill that category in better than I could.

If you are on a budget a cheap game is Ghost Recon Shadow Force, great turn based play (obviously not as good as Fire Emblem, but cheaper and slightly different)
Beyond that SMT IV, Mario, Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, Sticker Star, and Donkey Kong will all eat your battery happily. Personally I like the original 3DS just for portability sake, I don't have any complaints about the size.

Got to agree with quite a few people here and say fire emblem: awakening, Devil survivor: over-clocked, Monster hunter 3, and Shin Megami Tensei IV.

All great games, mostly turn based strategy RPG games so if you enjoy that genre then buy them.

Ok, this thread has covered just about everything I can recall at the moment other than one upcomeing title and another niche title.

The game yet to be released is Shovel Knight, a Castlevania, Megaman like platformer game that swings slightly Ducktales.
Well worth checking out when it's released in September.

The others Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Town
[sub](That tasty alliteration)[/sub]
So, do you like farming?
Are you the type of person to get aroused by a sense of accomplishment?
This games for you if you said yes to both, if not you'll probably hate it.

Lots of Fire Emblem: Awakening worship in this thread. I mean it's a great game but come on.

If you're interested in RPGs, people have already pointed out the rebate deal with FE:A and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Both are very good, but my favorite RPG of the year is easily Etrian Odyssey IV. So I'll suggest that, along with the 999 sequel Virtue's Last Reward, which I don't think anyone else has mentioned yet.

(Though if you can, you should really play 999 first. It's a DS game)

I've been having a great deal of fun playing Project X Zone. It's difficult to describe, but it's like a bizarre blend of Marvel vs Capcom, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Elite Beat Agents. It has a compelling mystery at its core, though the story does sort of peter out about 3/4 of the way through... and it takes WAY too long to get X and Zero (don't worry, all the characters are "unlocked" naturally through the game and you usually have access to all of them at once, which is in itself fairly impressive), but on the whole, it's exactly what it says on the tin: a massive crossover adventure.

...also Bruce Willis is in it.

Well that is one more thing I can't unsee now.

OT: Here's a list of the 3DS games I have, and would recommend:

Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon
Kid Icarus Uprising(controls are pretty lousy, but an amazing game anyway)
Paper Mario Sticker Star

Here are some games I don't have yet, but sound like it is a good idea to play them:

Fire Emblem: Awakening
Resident Evil Revelations
Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Finally, upcoming games that I'm looking forward to:

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Pokemon X and Y
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team

First of all, if at all possible, get yourself a 3DS XL. It might be a little extra money, but for a significantly larger screen and longer battery life the extra $20-$50 will be WELL worth it, I promise you.

Apart from that, I think most everyone here has covered what I was going to recommend. I assume since you aren't asking for DS games as well you already had a DS and don't need to catch up on any of those, lol.
Can't agree more on the XL. I look at my friend's 3DS when we play Monster Hunter, and I have to squint to see the tiiiiiny ass text o.o I have NO idea how I was good at reading that earlier on. Oh, and the 3D on the XL is SO much better~
