I've decided to finally jump back into this gaming generation, but this time, I going with the console that doesn't have a severe failure rate.

But which model should I choose? 160GB($300) or 320GB($350)?

Here is what I am going to use my PS3 for:
-Music Player (For all of my music. Around 1000 songs or more.)
-Bluray Movies (I probably won't download movies, I prefer owning the disc)
-Gaming (Well duh)

I plan to purchase LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers, Rock Band games, etc.

I know that lbp and mnr have tons of content, but I don't know how much space they take up.

As for rock band, I will buy several songs for it. When I owned a 360, I purchased around 200 songs, which took up about 8 GB.

So could anyone tell me which model is for me?

edit: Also, any game suggestions for when I start out?

another edit: I also want several psone classics.

Another question you should ask, aside from Rock-Band DLC, is how much DLC you normally find yourself buying. If you don't get much, get the 160GB version.

Remember, if you get the 160GB version and later down the line you're short on space, you can buy a laptop hard-drive and replace it with a much larger storage capacity.

I normally recommend exclusives when it comes to games, just because you might have a PC (or in this case a 360) that you could already get multiplatform games on. So I'd have to recommend Uncharted 1 and 2, Demon's Souls, inFamous, Killzone 2 and the two Ratchet and Clank games on there. All these should be pretty cheap now, so go nuts.

Well I like a few downloadable games, and I want a couple psone classics.

Also, with the upgraded hard-drive, do I lose anything with the switch?

I just bought my 350 GB pd3 yesterday. For a mere $50 difference, you might as well have more than twice the storage capacity.

Well if space is the issue, I would recommend buying the 160 GB one and with the extra $50 you can buy a hard drive replacement that is 500GB. I'm not sure about the US but in the UK you can get a 500 GB drive for around £30 -£40 depending on where you shop

I've about 25-30 games on my Xbox and a few downloaded onto the HDD too, and with a 60 GB hard drive, I'm pretty sure I could store the saves of another 10 games there too. I'm not sure if PS3 games eat GB like crazy but 160 should be enough if you have other uses to for that $50. Also, 1000 songs could fit into 1-2 GB, so you're fine there.

Sony - PlayStation 3 (160GB) with LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers and Cars 299 at Best Buy

Also, I saw a GT5 promo system too.. came with GT5 and the Grown Ups BluRay.

I am sure you can find some great deals, I wouldnt stress on HD space.. but I would prefer to get games in packages. So no matter what you can get a 2.5" HD for laptops that is faster and 500+ megs for like 75 bucks.

One note.. Little Big Planet 2 comes out in January, so I wouldnt buy it.. because LBP2 looks insane!

That looks like a great deal. I don't have the money now. I'm hoping that I will get one near the end of december/start of january.

Money is kind of an issue, but I'm not worrying about it. I'm just worrying about getting a second controller, and a decent game collection.

Buy the cheaper one!

I have a 60GB PS3, and only just recently had to give in and get a new HDD (admittedly I was always shuffling the PSN games around, but I never struggled too much). So now my PS3 has 500GB, and it was not only cheap (£40), but easy to do. Seriously easy. And it doesn't void your warranty either. There are some excellent videos online to show you exactly what to do, if and when you ever need to (you simply unscrew one thing, take it apart and slide in your new memory, then put it back together. It's essentially like changing a Nintendo cartridge.)

If changing your HDD: You can save everything if you have a spare external drive (again, the videos will show you how to do this - and you can save at least a few things if you have a memory stick from your camera or PSP or something.) If you don't, you WILL lose all the game saves but your trophy information and profile stuff will be retained as that's saved online. You can re-download any PSN games and DLC as many times as you like to your main console, so don't worry about losing those.

Some of the games I've enjoyed the most have been:
Katamari, 3D Dot Game Heroes (a fun remake of the SNES-era Legend of Zelda with some ace tower defence minigames) Ratchet and Clank:Crack in Time (the best PS3 version of the series by far), Dead Space and Heavy Rain (which is fascinating but has zero replayability, so maybe just rent it.) Also loving Disgaea 3, though it's a massive grindfest. Burnout Paradise is very good but flawed - a huge pain in the arse if you have a poor sense of navigation, as it doesn't guide you on tracks like all the other Burnout games did.
Seconding 'Infamous' and 'Uncharted', they're basically essential. On the PSN, WipeoutHD is glorious and the Pixeljunk games are worth a look (perhaps not Racer though.) I guess there are some FPS war games that you could probably get but...eh, I dunno.

I'm a bit dubious about the PS1 classics in general, though - they've not always been a worthwhile trip down memory lane. Bear in mind they're ALL vastly improved if you have a PSP to download them onto as the graphics don't suffer as much. I'm liking the PS1 RPGs - Grandia has been a delight.

You only "lose" anything if you don't back-up what's on the hard-drive that's already on there. If you're buying it new and changing it straight away, it won't make a difference. If you're upgrading later, just transfer all of the data on the old hard-drive either onto an external hard-drive or a USB, and when you put in the new hard-drive you can just transfer all your old data back.

Awww look everyone! A failed attempt at trolling, let's silently stare at it till it walks away.

While I find this quite clever, I purchased one of those other models, the 360 one was it? Well it broke. And I have no desire to use the Nintendo model. Thanks for the laugh though.

Well, heres a pro-tip, formating of the hard drive takes up 15gigs, so, minus 15 off of what you pick and thats much, on start, available memory you'll have.
