Getting girlfriends into games

If memory serves, most articles reference two very important factors that tend to drive women from games.

1) Annoyance with constant failure
2) Games which pander to a male audience

Many are already very well aware of the latter, however the former was new information to me, so I will share it and hope it helps.
To elucidate, females tend to abandon games because apparently they learn by praise or success, whereas men are more comfortable learning with failure. The interpretation offered for this was where men might be fine rushing into a scenario guns blazing and dieing/meeting with critical failure ten-twenty times in order to learn the ropes, women are not. This is not to say that if you are trying to get your girl into games that you might as well be a blind man giving directions, rather the article I read (if memory serves) seemed to suggest that praise and high rates of success just ease women into the experience better.

So, as has been suggested, low difficulty, co-op with lots of help, and a genuine interest on their part rather than a sincere wish on yours would be ideal.

I think most girls that get into gaming got into it at a young age. My sister said that I used to watch her and my older cousins play, and when they left, I would pick up the control, shove in a game I like and clock it. (Frankly I don't remember this so I have no idea how young I was, but it was on PS1 xD)

Buy a Wii. Make her wear short shorts or a skirt when she plays it tho so you'll have something to keep your interest and make a sort of investment out of the purchase.
XD! I'll remember that! It would be quite a sight.

Ok, back to subject, start her off on some small RPG's, not lost oddesy as its boring. Maybe a low level shooting game? One what isn't so fast paced. New gamers, they can't keep up with our skills, they need to think what button to press.

Also portal, time to think, always fun!
Yet some puzzles need to act fast, maybe tag-teaming the game then.

Maybe an "old" shmup played co-op could be a good idea ?
Like Raiden Project or Shikigami no Shiro II.

My girlfriend of ten months, ... has so far managed to play and finish DOA 4 countless times...
That's surprising. DOA 4 wouldn't be in a top 100 list of "Games I'd recommend to my girlfriend". Jiggle physics normally isn't something that enthralls lasses.
Then Soul Caliber 4 shouldn't be up there either. Have you ever seen a custom female character that didn't have the sliders for muscle set at -50 and the physique set at +50?*

*Basically no muscle but still skinny with really huge boobs.
Am I the only guy that finds that absolutely disgusting? I mean, it's unrealistic and gross to have a woman that disproportioned... Yet they seem prevalent in gaming culture...
No, you're probably not.

I have created two female characters in SC4, and I usually balance the sliders, so they look a bit like Seung Mi Na, athletic but not overly buff, and with a believable physique.

There is sooo much going on in this thread....

The Soul Caliber women have breasts larger than there heads yes, but disgusting? They are hardly that revolting, Unrealistic, too cartoony to get a woody over, sure. But disgusting? And this extreme is not as common as all that, people talk about the same handful of games over and over again when they talk about physical disproportion. What about Beyond Good and Evil, What about Metroid, What about Indigo Prophecy (Farenheit)

Now, on the getting your girlfriend into gaming issue. This question is most relevant to 16 year olds, so my advice is wait two or three years and then you'll either not care about it anymore or not have a girlfriend. It's always get the girl into gaming... Why don't you et out of gaming and into Sex and the City? Is your girlfriend asking you to do that? If so then you have a bargaining chip for trade, but I'd just dump her.

And there are plenty of hot looking gamer girls out there for the taking, unfortunately they don't want to date geeky fanboy types that think all gamer girls are fat and ugly and probably wouldn't want to go out with a guy who wants to get their gf into gaming because the next step is to get your gf into playing the same games you do.

This is a self defeating question because asking it displays the kind of behaviour and belief you need to abandon to have that perfect relationship you're dreaming of.

Introduce them to Final Fantasy. From there maybe Grand Theft, or CoD4. Best game titles ever according to moi (not so much GTA but more the latter).

And if you hadn't seen my profile/avvy, I am a girl. Altho, no guy got me into gaming. I just played Final Fantasy and couldn't stop from there.

EDIT: Buy a Wii. Make her wear short shorts or a skirt when she plays it tho so you'll have something to keep your interest and make a sort of investment out of the purchase.
This may or may not be the best damn post I've ever read on this forum.
Why, thank you! I did it once for my man, put on some shorts and a tank and played Wii Sports. He liked the jogging game. xD

Final Fantasy and Zelda

Most of the gamegirls I know fell in love with either one of those.

Wii, DS, Mario are all awesome stepping stones too

Maybe I would even recommend Resident Evil, as it is more comparable to horror than to action. And as far as I know, a girl would more likely go to a horror movie than an action movie

EDIT: how could I forget the Sims. Girls can get seriously addicted to that one

don't try shooting extrrrragavanzas or sports (though tennis games are not a bad idea), story-driven games are a good way, and Nintendo is usually your best friend (Super Mario, Kirby and Zelda -cliches work, believe me, try Super Princess Peach). If she likes ghost stories and horror movies, have her play Silent Hill 2 and 3 and the Fatal Frame series, I know some friends started gaming that way.

You're an idiot. Obviously the only you've seen are fat or ugly. I'm a chick who's a gamer and I'm pretty good-looking. Your scicene is wrong...
congrats for belonging to that 1% ^^
or... are you a pc or console gamer?

Fun co-op games with simple controls and female characters are your best bet to begin. Try Lego Star Wars / Indiana Jones, or one of the Dynasty Warriors games.
Lego Star Wars is stupid amounts of fun, especially on co-op. Especially on co-op when you "accidentally" keep hitting each other until you explode in a shower of studs. Ok, maybe that's just me.

Indiana Jones is less fun, because one player is always Indy, and the other is always someone terribly lame. Takes a bit of the enjoyment out of it. With Star Wars the distribution of cool characters is far more even.

The first game I ever played and loved was Aladdin for the SEGA, and after that I went through a huge UT2K3 phase. Those really got me into it (girl btw). Try fantasy games where there's alot of interaction with NPCs. Oblivion perhaps? I know I really liked it.

I'm a Console gamer. And there are heaps of hot gamer chicks! There is a chick who I have great discussions with at Game at Kotara and she's a sight for sore eyes. Don't sterotype gamer girls just because you're all intimidated by us ^.^
