Getting into Anime

So, for a long time, my definition of anime was all kinds of wrong. The only experiences I had had with anime were Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh! and Dragonball Z, which I have learned since represents a very small part of what is anime. I also had a lot of preconceptions that Anime tended to be nonsensical and pull supernatural elements out of nowhere, which a lot of the ones on Cartoon Network Tsunami tended to do.

Since then, a friend got me into Baccano!, which I'm absolutely loving. I like the dark tones mixed with light comedy that it brings, and I love the wide assortment of characters, as well as the interesting story that, while it does have some out there elements like the Railchaser, still sticks to the rules it creates, which is all I really need.

My question to you, my fellow escapees, is this: Where do I go from here? Baccano! is sadly very short, so I'm wondering what else would be up my alley given how much I love this show. A friend has already recommended Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood to me, but what other animes would you suggest?

If you like Baccano then you should check out Durarara. It's from the same studio that made Baccano and has a very interesting story and characters. You might also enjoy Eden of the East, it's also really short. Shorter than Baccano even, but it's very good.

From Baccano!, one goes to Durarara!! (exclamation marks part of the title).

And cue all the unwashed masses proclaiming their love for Guren Lagann.

Anyway, I will put on my pretentious hat and say that if you want variation with vaguely adult attitudes, look at this lot:

Hourou Musuko
Haibane Renmei
Gunslinger Girl
GitS
Ergo Proxy
RahXephon

And a dinky OAV, if you can still find it: Mari to Gali, which is great as a fun physics tutorial, simultaneously parodying and paying homage to many a historic scientific figure.

Well, I'm not a big anime watcher anymore. Buuuuut, something that is always worth an afternoon of fun (since it's basically 6 episodes) is "Fooly Cooly"; something new can be noticed/learned in every time you re-watch it. Some people don't enjoy it mostly because it just seems like a man on crack spend an afternoon animated, then he took some LSD and wrote the script and redrew some of the scenes in a completely different style.

You can catch it on Netflix instant or just stream it off Animecrazy or whatever your preferred streaming site is.

Cool, another anime recommendation thread.

Here's some i'd suggest:

Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Death Note
Neon Genesis Evangelion
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

All of those are good, but Bebop is probably your best bet. I pretty much ranked those in order of what I figured you might like. The last 3 have some supernatural elements, which you seem to take issue with.

Very vaguely asking for suggestions will get you nowhere. People are going to either post their favourites or just random stuff they can think of. Of course you can go through each and every recommendation but it's kinda time wasting, especially if you have relatively clear preferences.

A better option would be to look for good anime database sites and search for genres/keywords which sound appealing to you and then inspect the most popular/highest rated stuff from the list. The sites I found the most useful are http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ and http://www.anime-planet.com/. The latter also lists similar anime for every entry which I found to be extremely handy for finding new stuff to watch.

First of all, let me welcome you to the world of anime!

Next, do you watch your anime subbed or dubbed? Because it really matters for what recommendation I can give. If you are not sure or don't mind either, I recommend watching subbed versions, because a lot of amazing shows never get English dubs.

Now for the actual recommendations:

Dubbed:

Dubbed series aren't really my forte, so these are the most well known series that I know of that might appeal to you.

If you liked Baccano!, you will most likely like Durarara! too. Same studio, same writer, same style. Like how practically everyone is a main character.

Death Note seems to be popular among those new to Japanese animation. Consequently, if you liked Death Note, you should give Code Geass a whirl.

Subbed:

Steins;Gate The origin of my avatar. Writing a summary will give half the plot away so I'll keep it short: Sci-fi time travel-esque series set in modern day Akihabara, Japan. Thrilling, Dramatic and Hilarious. My standard recommendation for threads like these.

Bakemonogatari This one is a bit of a gamble, but I can safely say that if you liked the first episode, you'll like all of 'em.

CLANNAD There is a dub, but I won't allow you to watch that abomination. I don't know your preferences, but this is a romance that will tear your heart to shreds. A notorious tearjerker.

Hope that helped ;)

Good Stand Alone Anime Movies:
These do not require any previous knowledge of a TV series or OVA to enjoy.

Anything by the late Satoshi Kon
Paprika
Tokyo Godfathers
Perfect Blue, Psychological Thriller (Darren Aronofski's Favorite Movie, and the inspiration for Black Swan!)
Sometime Surreal, Always Poignant.
Fluid Animation met with fascinating narratives about modern life.

Tezuka's Metropolis
Based off the Fritz Lang movie of the same name, it was made after the death Tezuka.
While several of his contemporaries have gone on record saying that he would have hated it, it's still a decent movie.

Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
See the first one first (obviously).
Best Cyberpunk Action Thriller this side of Johnny Mnemonic
But with writing and philosophical exploration on the same level as Neal Stephenson crossed with Harlan Ellison.

AKIRA
Everyone's recommended this one by now, so why not take the bite?

Wings of the Honneamise
It's an interesting science fiction story backed up with fantastic visuals and overall art design. It's also the most expensive anime ever made, and it shows.

Now some series I recommend:
Nichijou (My ordinary life)
Based off a series of 4 panel gag comics, nichijou is a funny and semi surreal look into the potential absurdities of day to day life. The animation is fantastic, the character designs are crisp, and the comedic timing overcomes any potential culture barriers.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Goodbye Despair Teacher)
More good animation, matched with an excellent satire of modern day Japan although there's enough similar between our culture that you'll see the connections almost immediately.
It's best black comedy/parody I've seen all year.

Paranoia Agent
More of Satoshi Kon's excellent work, but this time as a full TV series.
Again, semi surreal psychological drama.

flcl (Fooly Cooly)
While we're at it, most Gainax stuff is pretty good. Once you've been versed well enough in Anime fandom, you might want to seek out Otaku no Video, because as interesting as it is you'd need to understand the fandom more to get the parody. FLCL is short and features music by one of the greatest Japanese Rock bands of all time, The Pillows.

Evangelion
With the caveat that you take it seriously coming in, and be prepared to use your brain. It's not a terribly confusing series, as the plot itself requires little understanding of jargon of techno babble, but the characters are very deep and complex as are their motivations and actions. The same goes for the repeated themes and symbolism. It's not confusing, but it is mentally involving and can seem boring or trite if you go into it like an action series or regular drama. Abandon expectation, and just listen to the story that they are trying to tell, or it may be off putting. Seriously, the studio got death threats and graffiti from fans who were outraged over the more cerebral and symbolic ending
Still, the whole series is a standard 26 episodes long, with 1 unnecessary movie, one necessary movie and an OVA remake.
This brings me to an important note:

A note on long running franchises:
Mobile Suit Gundam: 15 TV Series making up 502 episodes. Almost 10 Movies. 7 OVA. 5 alternate timelines and 4 decades of material.
Bleach: 53 Volumes of manga, 358 episodes, ongoing. 4 films and a stage musical.
Detective Conan: 643 Episodes since 1996 and ongoing. 75 Volumes of Manga. 15 Movies.

It's no wonder that some people have a problem getting into anime!
At least Dr. Who stays in just 1 timeline!
If you are going to try to get into a long running or long series, ask around first about where to start. Gundam, for example, has multiple timelines and continuities, not all of which need to be known to understand a given story. So, ask which OVA's and Movies don't really require more than a read of wikipedia.
Detective Conan on the other hand is largely interchangeable. All you need to know can be found in the synopsis on wikipedia. After that, you can just watch any given episode since they're just a bunch of disconnected murder mysteries. Bleach, however, is a bit of slog due to the sheer number of characters as well filler episodes. It can be a real time waster just trying to catch up.

Overall, just keep asking around and watching reviews.
You'll be surprised what you'll find.

Thank you, everyone who posted above me. I've written down all your recommendations and I'm researching them right now.

For anyone who has other suggestions, I should let you know that I'd prefer dubbed over subbed, at least until I get used to the whole format :p

Only one anime to add really

Slayers

Watch any of the seasons, they cover all the back story you need to know each time (They have a character for that). It balances funny and serious like nothing else I have watched so it is a good laugh while still being moderately tense.

**blinks**

Wow. I didn't expect to see anyone else recommending Slayers. Damn.

Also - love the Utena avatar! ^^

OP: Anyway, if you like fantasy adventure (ie like Dungeons and Dragons) then watch Slayers. It's basically an anime about D&D.

As for other stuff... several of the recommenders above have already mentioned the ones I would have. I'll go ahead and put in another vote for Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I won't recommend you Sailor Moon, even though I love it, because it sounds like it fits the list of animes you don't like. :p

Fullmetal Alchemist (I prefer the original series)
FLCL (Fooly Cooly)
Angel Beats (Another short series but really pulled my heart strings towards the end.)
Persona 4: The Animation (Not a fanboy, I swear ._.)
Ghost In The Shell
Cowboy Bebop
One Piece (WHAT?!)

Pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli, really. My personal recommendation would be Spirited Away.

Nobody ever recommends these two shows in these kinda posts so I will.

Samurai Champloo(Sub)
The Big O(Dub)

Please note sub and dub, it matters in these cases.

I suggest the original Fullmetal Alchemist. Damn it! I can't be the only one who likes it, even if Brotherhood's out! Anyway, you can find Brotherhood and the first FMA anime on YouTube, full episodes, dub/sub on Funimation's channel. I'd also advise trying out, Trigun and Great Teacher Onizuka.

I wish I met you a week ago, i just did a thesis on the negative stereotypes and skewed definitions people have on anime and this woulda been gold!

Anyways, back on topic...

i am a huge anime fan and have a large collection on DVD and download... looking at them now these are the ones that stick out as the best...

Squid Girl- Comedy/Gag-a-Day (hilarious, if a bit kiddy... But the tentacle jokes really make it *more of a personal preference probably, but give it a try if you wanna*!)
Elfen Lied- Action/Plot-Based (absolutely AWESOME but very dark and violent. Be prepared to be a little disturbed if you decide to watch this)
Code Geass- Action/Mecha (50 episodes of awesome. Plot twists you don't see coming, well-rounded characters, only a few fillers, and an ending that left me in tears... definitely recommended!)
Stand Alone Complex- Action/Mystery/Thriller (famous in it's own right this is a definite recommendation)
Gurren Lagann- Action/comedy (don't let the first episode throw you off, this is a great show! It is hilarious and I ended up loving every character in it through all their battles. Be warned: the plot gets a little "WTF?" near the end but still highly looked upon by me)
Neon Genesis Evangelion- Mecha/Plot-Based/Action (actual "plot" doesn't start until right around episode 14 but still, this takes it's place at the top of my faves! I suggest you watch "Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone" first. It's a movie that sums up the first half of the series in a nutshell, so it'll be a bit confusing to someone without the actual story as a backing it will give you a general feel of the show and it's damn good!)

Hope it helps!

Hope it helps!

The lack of people with Trigun on there list is disturbing(only one really)

for dubs avoid any dubs done by 4kids or anything edited by toonzai both are made fun of for the changes they have done to anime to make them more kid friendly(toonzai dose some stupidly funny things like blue Mr. Popo) Outer then those two most dubs are not that bad.

There may be a few things in-general that you may want to know

if a charter A is talking about Charter B and it cuts to Charter B sneezing it relates to an old saying basically sumed up as if you sneeze once someone is talking about you.Sneeze twice someone is talking bad about you. Sneeze three times you are sick.

Nosebleeds on teenage boys signify dirty thoughts

both are meant to be transition jokes for getting to the next seen.

I had a friend that got hung up on them(don't know if it will happen to you) and I had to explain every joke for a Japanese audience.
