Getting into Morrowind.

Howdy.

I'm a pretty big Oblivion fan.
I finished the game several times and enjoyed myself a lot.
The wait for Skyrim is of course slowly killing me on the inside, and will consume most of my black and empty soul before I am relieved and can play the next pearl in this awesome series.

So, I figured, lets try Morrowind.
I got it in steam, and I downloaded the 2011 graphic pack that was mentioned here a few months ago.
But I never really got started.

I felt just like I first started playing Oblivion. Lost.
What are some starters tips?
What skills are a massive waste of time, even though they sound awesome.
It's that sort of traps I usually fall for in RPG's and wish to avoid.

Can I screw up a character?
What are the basic do's and don't's

And of course, any other type of suggestions are always welcome!

Well, if you are playing a stealth character, speechcraft and security will have more value than when you were playing Oblivion, since you can no longer compensate for low stats with pure skill.
I would also advise against using short blades as your main means of attac, unless you enchant them.
Using the Atronarch as your sign isn't as debilitating as it used to be, because your MP only recharges when you're resting, so it is actually a viable pick if you're going for a pure mage build.
Enchant is pretty useless, since the odds of successfully enchanting an item on your own is so low.

Find the boots of blinding speed and get the map up on the top right of the screen and you get around A LOT faster.

Ah, morrowind how I miss your rocky coast and screaming cliff Racers.. There is some immersion in morrowind they lost in oblivion. (yatzhee mentioned that as well). I felt they were better in fallout 3 and NV so I got my hopes up for skyrim as well.

My only hint is to stay near the road and...ah, this might be a gamebreaker but alteration jump high power (prob not max) 1-2 seconds, I say no more.

Don't choose Acrobatics or Athletics as Major or Minor skills. You'll level them up too quickly and it'll waste your multiplier. Those skills pretty much advance automatically as you play the game.

In Morrowind the enemy scaling isn't as bad as in Oblivion, so you don't have to worry too much about maximising your multiplier every level, but it doesn't hurt all the same.

Anyway, this won't really matter to you for a while, but later on if you're looking for mods, and you have the urge to play a vampire at some point, I'd recommend Vampire Embrace, Vampiric Hunger and Vampire Realism.

Well the Elder Scrolls Wiki gives some tips for Oblivion players who are looking in to Morrowind and vice versa, you should check there.
If you didn't play Morrowind before Oblivion, you're bound to not only be completely unimpressed but also a bit confused.

I'm trying to get into it too. Tried a few times but couldn't really get into it. However I have discovered an RPG rule which I believe will improve it for me since it worked for Dragon Age. Play as whatever class and with whatever skills you want and don't listen to people about the "best" way to do it.

That's mostly graphic and aesthetic mods, if I remember correctly. I think TheTygre means gameplay and content mods. However, I don't think you should seek them out until you've played the game a bit and know what you want, otherwise you'll just be overwhelmed by the choice. Without seeing the unmodded state you wouldn't be able to appreciate the mod as much either.

First thing, if you're walking along near Seyda Neen and see a wizard Wood Elf fall out of the sky, there are some scrolls on his body. Scrolls of Icarian Flight I think. Use them. They make your stats go sky high, very useful.
