I've heard great things about Oni's melee system, although that game is really quite old now.

Ninja'd. I totally agree, slow mo+ batman = WIN!
Apart from finishing moves where sometimes he completely missed but hits or when you kick their stomach and they clutch their head.

So, selecting an attack from a menu, then watching another retarded animation that is completely off of your character attacking is the right way to do melee combat?
Seriously?
Listen I'm aware you probably love ZP but you need to stop parroting Yahtzee's closed mindedness. Not all turn based combat works that way in fact many games with turn based combat hardly have an animation at all. They keep things short as not to bore people please stop saying such baseless statements. I bet you have never even played a game with turn based combat so you have no right to criticize it.

I disliked Turn based combat long before I even knew about this site.

I haven't played a Turn Based Combat game in years, the last few I do remember though were Lord Of The Rings The Third Age, FFX and some turn based FF spin off. Just because someone doesn't like TBC doesn't mean they're trying to be like Yahtzee, and that also doesn't mean they haven't played a game with TBC.
If you have played Turn based combat games then you would know that most of your insults towards them are baseless. And I assume you are parroting Yahtzee because many arguments you use he uses too. ever since you came here to the escapist I have seen nothing but blind hate of JRPGs and turn based combat from you most of it being blind hatred.

For a first person game, The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena probably has the best combat I have ever seen. It's damn good.

Well for FPS I don't really like the auto kill of melee in MW2 and BF:BC2. In BioShock 2 multiplayer tho I think they do a decent job of it - at full HP it takes probably 5 whacks to kill someone and no auto aim crap like we see in the other games.

As far as actual melee fighting goes, I've got to agree with people who said Batman: Arkham Asylum. So good!

I was goin' down the list like, "Oh goody! Everyone's gonna think I'm SO smart! Now I just gotta- OH GOD DAMMIT SOMEONE BEAT ME TO IT."

So in that case...

What he said.

Listen, I'm aware you probably think you're clever, but you need to stop throwing idiotic turns of phrase at people that disagree with you. He doesn't like TBC, that doesn't make him close minded, that makes him a person with a preference. Stop throwing that term out like confetie, it doesn't mean what you think it means.
I'm aware I'm not the smartest person here but I don't hate on things I hardly know anything about.

Zenoclash did it pretty well.

Shame about it ending mid sentence just before anything interesting started to happen.
agreed, Zenoclash did do melee combat really well, but the ending was a bit of a let down.

the CoR games did Melee really well too
