I'm new to Steam, and I'm trying it solely for the purpose of grabbing older games. Question is, does Steam keep the games up to date, regarding patches and such? If I download Fallout 1 and 2, will the versions I get already be "current", or will I then have to go hunt down patches?

Thanks.

(I already downloaded Half-Life, but I had to quit after about ten minutes because I felt nauseated. Hopefully it's just a matter of adjustment!)

Steam auto-patches things, so no need to hunt patches down!

If all you want is older games, you might as well go to GOG.com, which is a similar service to steam, with the games being modified to run on win7 and such, but has a larger library of old games and comes without DRM attached (ie you just download the installer and you dont need to have a background application running to play it).

GOG.com closed down a few days ago. You can redownload, but can't buy anything.

But on Steam, the games will be patched and fixed automatically.

You do know that was a marketing stunt, right?

Steam has all of the most recent versions of everything, and automatically downloads the patches you need. It's awesome.
I still think Steam is probably the best program ever for gamers. Digital distribution, constant up-to-date patching and updating, online communities, forums, and MOTHERFUCKING IN-GAME CROSS-GAME INSTANT MESSAGING.

Except for S.T.A.L.K.E.R SoC. Granted that was an unofficial patch but I can't play online! Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

In the case of games like Fallout 2, you'll still need to download the Restoration Project to fix the bugs in the final official developer release, but Steam does release things up to the final dev release and auto-patches (though sometimes they're a couple of days behind---the Patrician 4 1.13 release-day patch came out on Steam on Monday, while GamersGate and other customers got it Friday the 17th.)
