I'm tempted to vote for him and see if he can actually make it happen.... NOT. Newt is the epitome of what we want to get away from. Rich fat cat white old paranoid republicans. We had enough of that with Bush.

It took 5% of the US budget in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s for a day trip that took over a decade and a half to plan.

And this madman wants it done in 8 years on a shoestring?
It's a pretty easy guess that his "plan" involves shoveling scads of taxpayer money to his corporate buddies with no-bid contracts, then if nothing happens by the end of his second term, he'll just shrug before he laughs his way to a cozy "advisor" job given to him by one of aforementioned corporate buddies.

There's just one thing Newt Gingrich loves more than money, and that's himself.
Isn't he supposed to be one of those "hands off government" nutcases? Even though that is what he would do, it would make him even more hypocritical.

How can anyone vote for these slimy republicans?

"We ruined the economy and started two unwinable wars, but Obama wants free healthcare! Vote Republican."
The Electoral College needs reforming as well as more parties running in the US.

I think I'll still keep to my plan to vote for Vermin Supreme. He's promising every American a free pony.
Correction: a MANDATORY pony that you are required to take with you at all times as identification. What if I don't want a pony? I can't take care of my cat, let alone a pony. Also, ponies smell bad. And I can't even ride on them because they're so small !

Vermin Supreme is just another politician bought by the corporations, pandering to his MLP campaign donors.
You do know that he's a satirical candidate, right? Nobody expects him to win, least of all himself. This is more for fun than anything else.
Don't underestimate the horse-lobby my friend, they've been steadily expanding their influence in American politics and media. MLP is but one example, the recent "War horse" movie by Steven Spielberg is another example of equine propaganda. Sure, Spielberg claims he supports the Democratic party but as you may know, he was knighted by the Queen of England in 2001. And if there's one thing that's crucial to knights, it's horses surely?

I rest my case.

For those who don't really understand why Gingrich would advocate such a seemingly massive waste of money, I feel a history lesson is in order, this does have bearing on the matter and is not just a tangent to make use of some relatively random knowledge I have. Welcome to the 1960s. It's the height of the Cold War and recently reports (all completely false) have been surfacing about a "missile gap" between the United States and the Soviet Union, in the Soviet Union's favor. These flames were fanned by many politicians, including newly elected president John F. Kennedy and his vice-president Lyndon Johnson. To combat the Soviet menace, president Kennedy vowed that the United States would be the first nation to win the space race. This resulted in Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the moon in 1969. However, the focus should be on what came before that. As anyone who knows (and many who don't) anything about rockets will explain, rockets are massive and expensive. The project to build a working rocket capable of bringing an astronaut to the surface of the moon and back actually became so great that it developed its own political constituency, hence why so many rocket parts are designed and manufactured in Massachusetts (home state to President Kennedy) and mission control is in Houston (capital of Vice President Johnson's Texas). So Gingrich advocating this is not only for the sake of a grandiose campaign promise, it's also to tap into a little-known, but large, area of voters.

I don't think it is a good idea to build anything on the moon. Its small and its orbit would be easy to screw with. It would be disastrous for the earth if we lost our moon or its orbit were to fail and fall into the earth.

Besides, there is absolutely nothing on the moon worthy of having a colony there. You can't grow anything on dead rock. A space station would be a much better idea. Or a colony on one of the other planets but (lol) thats out of our reach atm.

What happened to Republicans being all about fiscal responsibility and all that crap the Tea Party just won't shut up about?

Newt... Your country is in hock to the tune of over ten trillion dollars, just last year you came really close to defaulting on your loans and China has so many of your IOUs that they could repo the entire country and everything in it. Now is not the time for crazy spending sprees.

I love the Idea of a moon colony, with every fabric of my being I want us as a nation to go Galactic. And here is how you do it, use all of the money that would go to welfare and give it to NASA and say, Moon colony NOW!

This Moon colony during his second term thing was a response to people claiming he was too grandiose... I don't think this guy is in a healthy state of mind

Physical characteristics of the Moon

Mean radius: 1,737.10 km (0.273 Earths)
Equatorial radius: 1,738.14 km (0.273 Earths)
Polar radius: 1,735.97 km (0.273 Earths)
Circumference: 10,921 km (equatorial)
Surface area: 3.793 × 107 km2 (0.074 Earths)
Volume: 2.1958 × 1010 km3 (0.020 Earths)
Mass: 7.3477 × 1022 kg (0.0123 Earths)

Yes I'm sure the moon looks very small from your backyard with the naked eye. I can assure you it's not that small. It's going to take a lot more than a moon base to interfere "screw with" the orbit of the moon.

The Moon due to it's proximity to the Earth is considered to be the logical candidate for a permanent extraterrestrial base. In September 2009, that it was announced that NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper on India's Chandrayaan-1 strongly indicated water was present on the Moon in decent quantities at the Lunar poles, and where you have water you can typically sustain life.

deepest economical crisis of the last 80 years...Uh, have you ever heard of the great depression buddy? I'd do my research before going around calling other people idiots.
That was exactly what I was referring to, you fucking moron.
Coming from the guy that took nearly a month to reply, that doesn't exactly phase me. Also you say that we are in the greatest economic depression in the last 80 years, meaning everything after 1932 was better that what we're going through now, according to what you said also 1932 isn't even the halfway point for the Great Depression...so you're saying that half of the great depression was better than this...yeah I'd get your facts straight.

Also, swearing does nothing to help further your point, it just makes you come across as someone with extreme anger issues that can't handle someone criticizing you without blowing up.

Also, congrats on necroing this thread.

As long as the money isn't being spent on helping poor people, it's okay.
Really what is more important, helping them or building BASES ON THE MOON! I think the answer is clear. Moon Base.

You know what better? Get rid of NASA. Lets the private sector colonize space. I'll be honest if the government got rid of NASA in the late 70's and allow the commercializing of space, we would already have a Disneyland on the moon and probably people living on Mars by now.

Sorry that I don't live in this forum and that I don't care to check PMs. It's so weird how you get so pissy about rounding errors when what I'm saying that this situation the world is in is the worst since the great depression, since that's obviously what I was referring to when I said "80 years". Seriously, who gives a shit if it wasn't the halfway point of the great depression, you tit? Do you really have to get stuck in the details so much? Would it be different if I had said "eight decades"? What a fucking nerd. Didn't you get the point I was making? Didn't you understand that it's moronic to propose a moon colony when we're collectively in a depression that only rivals the 1929 one? Please be honest, do you really care that I wrote "80 years" instead of "83 years"? Apparently so, because you had to go all "STOP THE PRESSES, THIS GUY IS SAYING THE PEAK OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION WAS AT 1932! I CANNOT ABIDE THIS! I MUST ANGRILY AND SARCASTICLY CORRECT THIS INTERNET PERSON!" Get off your high horse you moron. And don't bother to respond to me, since I'm probably gonna be banned after this and I certainly am not gonna read whatever witty autistic remarks you certainly will pull out of your ass.

Btw, who gives a shit about necroing threads or not? Seriously you have to have some kind of OCD to even aknowledge that.

Anger issues man, I just find irony in someone calling people idiots and then getting something wrong in the exact same post. Also you must really be insecure if I point a single error out and you throw a temper tantrum "THIS GUY IS STUPID! WE CAN'T MAKE A MOON BASE!" Followed by "HOW DARE YOU CORRECT ME FOR MAKING A MISTAKE! WHO CARES IF I GOT IT WRONG!"

Grow up, seriously, I just thought that you should know something that I learned in middle school.

P.S. there's a difference between living on a forum and never going on it, also necroing is commonly seen as a cry for attention, and is usually frowned upon.

P.S.S. You spelt acknowledge wrong, how am I supposed to aknowledge something?

"Sigh" you really are indecisive aren't you? You make half promises and then treat this whole thing like it's a game of chicken. Also you can't really accuse me of being autistic by going back to reply to your comments when you keep doing the exact same thing, I just don't take a month to come up with a reply.
