It's purely for the attention, even though more girls than ever are playing games. Sadly, though, they get the attention they want, therefore they're twats.

That's stereotypical of me, yes, so really this needs rephrasing:

A girl (friend of mine) plays videogames on PS3, who lives around the corner. Ome of my best mates girlfriend plays PS2, Xbox 360 and WoW with me, and especially him, frequently (wohay!).

Now, with the attention seeking girl gamers on Facebook, Xbox Live & WoW:

I don't fall for it as I've had a few girl-gamers on my Xbox Friends list & on MMOs. At first it impressed me but since then (5 years ago when I last fell for it) I've deleted every single one of them as I no long wish to chill with people like that in cyberspace, male or female. Now I'm not gay, nor did I only add them for the sake of them being female - they were just they were absolute twats, especially when you get to know them better IE swaring at anyone who didn't do what they say, etc..
In fact, online prostitutes, for want of a better word. Twisting other gamers to their will because they're the "exception" gamer. Seeking attention whenever the subject arises - So yeah, I think realistically I've only seen 2/3 girl gamers out of a hundred who wern't malicious prossies; and thus I never stayed in touch.

I think its an attention deficit issue. You still have guys who are "OMG! yer a girl and you are playing video games!!!!".
This is true. I run into guys on xbox live who instantly send me friend requests and start hitting on me. It's pretty ridiculous haha.
same here, then i talk them in circles about rpg's and they delete me,its so funny.

OT:like other post have said, just attention whores, nothing more.also not likely good at the games they play so they can't get noticed for being good at it so they gotta post and make it known they are female to get noticed.

while yes i do find it a turn on it depends there is playing a game because you actively like games and enjoy them and then there is playing games because you think guys will like you more or your boyfriend plays them. I like the first one the second one just annoys me.

Has anyone else ever noticed how many girls lately seem to think they're a "special snowflake" just because they play video games? It's really prevalent on Facebook especially. Statuses like "Yes I'm a girl, and yes I play video games <3". Or "lol I'm such a nerd, playin COD text ittt." Seriously, do they expect guys to just jump all over them like the fact that they play video games makes them hot suddenly? I'm not a guy though, so I guess that's why I'm posting this. Thoughts?
Remember, hon: geek chic is also 'cool' now. There is a reason that girls take those 3D glasses home from the movies, punch out the lenses and take photos of them wearing them as if they actually have big dorky nerd glasses. As another female gamer, it's annoying to see this shit because that kind of crap got the rest of us ENDLESS torture in middle and highschool.

Now, it's the IN thing.

Seriously, just look at your local mall. How many major outlets have shirts for girls that say, "I love nerds", with some cute little owl or something else associated with knowledge on the front? That's a big reason why these kinds of girl gamers are cropping up. Nerd=cool in this day and age and what is 'nerdier' than gaming?

Then there is the misconception that only men like video games. It's not at all true, but the industry and the general public act like female gamers so exist so these geek chic bitches think that if they advertise their sexual attractiveness to a group that is primarily male that they'll have people fawning over them. It's similar to the women of yesteryear who were all like, "Oh, I'm a girl and I LOOOOOOOOOOVE sports" to get male attention. Makes the rest of us look back for sure, but there really isn't much to be done in this case.

Seems to be more prevalent among the ones who are lacking in the attractiveness department. Which is a bit odd, since I wouldn't try and increase my odds of getting laid by advertising the fact that I spend hours on end pressing buttons.

Girl Gamer Syndrome? What are we 7 year olds now complaining about cooties? If half of us weren't so precious about our special gamer status I doubt we'd be critical of special gender status. Yeah you're a girl, but that doesn't make you L337? Such base resentment is beneath this happy-go-lucky cluster@#%$ that is the internet. Merry Christmas Gaming, Every One.

Hate them with a passion, not only because they are annoying as hell but they make all girl gamers look like attention grabbing whores, which is really sad for both parties.

It's just another easy way for some girls to get attention. Like any other aspect of a person, you've just got to figure out if it's genuine or not.

Most of the people I see do this are just that, girl gamers. As in, kids. And it's not really that strange to me, considering that teenage kids tend to have a lot of insecurities and general unsureness about their identities. I don't know anyone like that in person, and honestly, I've rarely seen that kind of attention seeking in-game, either.

What I have seen, and grown increasingly tired of, is the crap you get when the other players know you're female. I always use gender-neutral or male avatars, and while my username is derived from part of my actual name, most people don't pick up on that and I'm left alone unless someone recognizes me. Yet I've just about lost all patience in using a mic, and haven't used one in about two years. Sometimes I really want to, as it makes communicating so much easier and you feel like you have an identity in the game and occasionally make friends, etc. But these days I get so little time to play, I don't want my rare game time interrupted by trolls.

Something that is worrying me about this thread is the fact that most people seem to think that if you advertise the fact that you like games that makes you a gamer gurrl.

What if you genuinely like games?
Pfft, I posted a picture once on this site (it was a profile picture thread) and got accused immediately of being an attention whore because I was a woman. People are idiots and assholes.

Ugh, I know right! When I'm like, on facebook, because I'm social and have friends that talk to me and stuff, I see this all the time. I mean, why can't they be more like me? I'm a girl and I play games, but I don't try to attract attention to myself. I know that being a girl and also playing games doesn't make me special, and I hate all the attention I get from guys always wanting to be my friend. It's awful. I wish there was some way around it. Anyway, like I said, real gamer girls like me don't advertise the fact that they're girls who also play games, like me. I'm a girl who plays games. But I don't think I'm special for it. Love me.

Back when I played WoW, it seemed like all the girls were like that. It was just the worst! I hated most of them, there were a couple nicer ones like that in my guild that I liked but still found it kind of stupid. I guess I grudgingly respected the ones who actually had some skill, but the ones who were like "I'm a GIRL LOVE ME GIVE ME THINGS TAKE ME ON THE RAID!!! BOOBIES!!!" and actually sucked... Yeah, not happening. But then there's the quieter ones. I met a few like that and eventually you get to be better acquainted and they are actually the coolest people.

I haven't played WoW in forever, though. Probably... 4 years now. So more recently, to be honest, I haven't really seen any girls like that. I only have a few chick friends that game and they're pretty cool about it.

My girlfriend loves Assassin's Creed but unfortunately that's about the only game she plays. Well that and some DJ Hero lol. It's kind of sucky, I wish she was a little more into gaming but it's all good, I still get my gaming time in here and there.

I can't believe this is still an issue. We've been talking about this since... when? Halo 2? Probably longer ago if you count girls who bragged about playing Counter Strike and Starcraft. Honestly I don't get it at all. My sister and my girl friend have been playing video games all their lives and no one has ever made a big deal about it. It's 2011: girls play video games.

The "gender neutral" in gaming is implicitly male. Literally fifty percent of gamers are now female, but culture has a certain inertia to it, a Nurglish heft that makes it slow to change direction once it's started moving.

Well, it is true that boyculture and girlculture are different, and that girls and boys get different things out of their games. [citation needed], but statistically more girls are favorable to games with a stronger social component, esp. MMORPGs. When we're talking about games like Battlefield or L4D or TF2, then I feel it would be pretty much expected that you'd get a bit of neck-craning "WAS THAT A GURL?" "WHAT? WHERE?" when you turn on the mic, because these games are about shooting people in the brain and the social component is limited to saying horrible things about strangers. I'd guess that if you're a girl playing Battlefield 3, you probably really are a token.

)rStrangelove]It all comes down to sharing someone's hobbies i guess. If i spot a normal girl wearing an AC tshirt next to the hot looking blonde i'd choose the former. Why?

Chances are higher that Mrs.Assassine will accept games are my main hobby, thats all.

Girls crying for attention by labelling themselves gamer-girls obviously have problems getting attention of guys in the RL.

Just wear AC Tshirts, its really easy
the thing is...guys get all the best T-shits..and its a fucking travesty (Becuase mabye "I" want to wear an AC T-hsirt...dammit)
Oh god THIS! Wanted a Bioshock shirt. Got it, but it's a male-cut and it's a small...which is basically huge on a woman. I have to use it as a PJ shirt T-T I want to wear it out though so bad.

I've never ran into The grrl gamer and near all my female friends carry a DS in their purse, but from the sound of it it doesn't sound any worse the the obnoxious male gamer, you know the ones that love calling themselves hardcore and bragging about their 1337 M4ST3R Skills.

The funny thing is most of the girls who do at don't even play games. Or at least, they barely scratch the surface of gaming. You'd think girls who play games enough wouldn't want to tarnish girl gamers like that...damn bobble-headed bitches...

I hate it when guys tell girls, "use asexual names, or pick a male character". *****, if I want a feminine name, with a female character, I should be able to do that without harassment. I have a "boy" name in real life (Codi), so I tend to gravitate towards more girlish names in game.

The problem is, other male gamers reward that behavior, or even are the cause of it. When I played WoW, I would be given random RARE shit! Just because I was kind to someone, and I had tits IG and IRL.

All in all, I don't really hide the fact I'm a female, nor do I endorse it. I'm not some "Elite" girl because I can sit on my ass and push buttons.

I could go on forever about this, but it's annoying me. -_-

It's pretty sad how they don't realize how common they are. And I've told them this before, because I'm an idiot, "Just because you play Call of Duty, that doesn't mean you are a nerd or geek. Give me a call when you've played Diablo or Diablo II and you know who Joss Whedon is."

The big qualification for nerd and geek status should consist of three things: Type of games played, knowledge of nerd/geek media and figures involved in said media, and extensive knowledge in their area of nerddom/geekdom.
