I find the "special snowflakes" almost as irritating as girls who feel the need to post a thread about how superior they are because they don't feel the need to announce to the world that they play games.

Then again, I find just about everyone who makes a claim of "I AM TEH NERDZ CUZ I PLAY TEH GAMEZ!" rather irritating.
Where did I say I was superior? I posted this thread because I thought it would be interesting to hear the opinions of legitimate gamers of both genders. You're just assuming I feel superior. I mean, if a guy made this exact post, you wouldn't be accusing him of being condescending. But since I'm female, making this thread is OBVIOUSLY a cry for attention. Seriously? But whatever, I feel like defending myself here is going to be a lose/lose situation.

I am a female and I have been gaming since my boyfriend showed me Counter-Strike: Source 3 years ago. I've never been in it for the attention. I play because I genuinely enjoy it. I never hid the fact that I am a girl (my gaming name is Woman-at-Legs, while my boyfriend's is Man-at-Arms) but I never flaunted it either. I've suffered my fair share of 'get back in the kitchen' or 'make me a sandwich' and I've just tried to not let it bother me. In those situations, it seems to be the guys that are the attention seekers; thinking they're cool because they're hitting on/flirting with/abusing a girl and that somehow helps them with their ego and their superior gender complex. One player in particular said some pretty awful things to me (sexual harassment in short) and that's the only time I've ever bothered to do something about it. Normally I just let them wear themselves out or wait until a friend bans or mutes them. No big deal.

Ultimately though I am fed up with the immaturity of gamers, both male and female alike. I play a game to take a break from the bustle of every day life. I play to vent my frustration and to simply enjoy the challenge of climbing the score board. Not to be abused by some 13yr old who has probably only been playing the game for a month and already thinks he's 'all that'.

The admin on a TF2 server I used to play on a while back was a girl, the amount of guys who would join and then start saying things like "Go back to the kitchen" or "Make me a sandvich" would swiftly be dealt a happy sounding "Fuck off" and banhammer to the face because she just didn't take any of it.

I've played with quite a few girl gamers. Its not such a rare thing these days, nor should it be.

)rStrangelove]It all comes down to sharing someone's hobbies i guess. If i spot a normal girl wearing an AC tshirt next to the hot looking blonde i'd choose the former. Why?

Chances are higher that Mrs.Assassine will accept games are my main hobby, thats all.

Girls crying for attention by labelling themselves gamer-girls obviously have problems getting attention of guys in the RL.

Just wear AC Tshirts, its really easy
the thing is...guys get all the best T-shits..and its a fucking travesty (Becuase mabye "I" want to wear an AC T-hsirt...dammit)
Oh god THIS! Wanted a Bioshock shirt. Got it, but it's a male-cut and it's a small...which is basically huge on a woman. I have to use it as a PJ shirt T-T I want to wear it out though so bad.
I am Vault101 and I ask you a simple question

is a girl not entitled to a T-shirt of her favorite series?

NO, says the man the studo, "only boys play our games"

NO, says the man in the marketing department "boys make up most of the market, therefore the merchandise will suit boys"

NO says the man in the store "sorry the girls shits are over there...in that tiny corner"

but I chose somthing different..I chose the impossible.... I chose

PAIR OF SCISSORS AND A SEWING MACHINE!

ok no not really, Id probably really screw things up if I tried that...

I think what he means is looking from the first 2 pages you set yourself up as a representative for your gender answering every and all questions and providing your insight whilst denouncing other girls who talk about gaming like they are special.

Not saying I agree but it may be part of his viewpoint.
I'm not trying to be the sole representative of all females at all. Nor am I trying to raise myself up on a pedestal. The problem with this is, no matter how I word my opinions on this matter, it will sound like I think I can do no wrong. This is kind of frustrating to me, because I keep reading my messages repeatedly, and I try to word them in a way that doesn't sound condescending but it's kind of difficult when you're speaking of your own gender because it will automatically sound like "but I don't do these things, so I'm better!".

There are tons of girl gamers and they usually keep a better conversation then most dudes that I talk to. The thing that I've noticed is that the definition of "gamer" is really odd nowadays.

Like, a girl that can play a JRPG for almost 100+ hrs on one playthrough could be considered a gamer, but a "hardcore" gamer is someone that plays all the major titles that you'll probably forget about in a couple of months. Some male "gamers" call themselves that due to the fact that they play Halo or CoD religiously.

It's like, you aren't a gamer unless you put hundreds of hours into the multiplayer of the game. That's kinda why I like Yahtzee's reviews since he focuses mainly on the single player aspects.

One thing that truly irks me are those girls that feel the need to "prove themselves." Like that Mrs. Violence chick, that said something along the lines of "I'm a girl gamer, and I wanna prove that girls can play video games" on the Controller, that Battlefield 3 webseries. There are plenty of games out there, but FPSs shouldn't be the genre that make you a gamer.

Believe me, I've had so many more intense moments in Catherine and the Persona games that had my heart beating so fast due to being nervous or accomplishing something then in any "hardcore FPS."

My girlfriend is pretty poor so whenever she comes over to hang out we spend all our time playing games like Zelda or Arkham City (both of which she beat). She even beat Persona 4 before I did and I'm the one that owns it! I think it's safe to assume that she's a gamer, even with her measly 6 hrs of CoD: BlOps online playtime.

Sorry for the tl;dr essay here, but I feel like needed to get my point across. Plus, I have nothing to do at work right now, soyea.
thats the thing..a "real" gamer knows that "COD" and "online" are not representitive of the thing well call "gaming" everyone knows that

if that were true then "yahtzee" wouldnt be considered a gamer because he probably wouldnt play COD online outside of his reveiws

I've hardly ever played online,, Ive never played COD...Im still a gamer

basically what Im saying is it shows that thease "girrls" actually dont know what they are talking about, they couldnt name wolfenstein 3D or DOOM...

COD is like starwars...accesible to the masses, so you can use it to pretend your a "gamer girrl"

Some guys on my Facebook stream sometimes make posts about CoD. Now some girls do it too.

The biggest thing I take away from it is that's there's no accounting for taste, not "what an attention whore". Who gives a fuck? Its like when nerd-nerds get pissy because 'hipsters' are 'stealing' their shit.

its one thing to activly play COD and other games and make a big deal out of it

its another thing to not actually be into gaming, but "make out like you are" for the attention, there are actually women who do thsi professionally, and Im sure other girls who do for the attention

just look at #1

Has anyone else ever noticed how many girls lately seem to think they're a "special snowflake" just because they play video games? It's really prevalent on Facebook especially. Statuses like "Yes I'm a girl, and yes I play video games <3". Or "lol I'm such a nerd, playin COD text ittt." Seriously, do they expect guys to just jump all over them like the fact that they play video games makes them hot suddenly? I'm not a guy though, so I guess that's why I'm posting this. Thoughts?
it's because most girls who are gamers aren't particularly attractive, while the ones who say "Yes I'm a girl, and yes I play video games <3" tend to either be attractive or belong to a "clique" where it's generally thought of as uncool to play games.

EDIT: and yes, those girls DO deserve special recognition.
...WHY? for being shallow twats?

The problem with the whole girl gamer thing is that in our culture there is a serious problem rooted deep that often stays in the dark. The problem? Many "gamers" think that girls/women don't/should not play games.

This mentality is what leads to some people worshipping attractive gamer girls, and some female gamers receiving shitty treatment.

Example from the site:

what the fuck is wrong with people?

anyway I wonder how old thease people are, I mean this is just fucking creepy, I cant imagine this coming from sane adults...anonymous or otherwise

but "GIFT" aside I dont see why some guys wouldnt want girls playing games...and this also pisses me off because I have every right to be there as they do

Well being a girl does get you a certain amount of attention, for example:

I used to be real into Left 4 Dead, and whilst waiting in the lobby for people to join a friend and I noticed that people with especially girly gamertags would acquire team mates faster, for people that haven't played Left 4 Dead's versus multiplayer you're in a lobby with eight spots and two teams to choose from, so 4 would be infected and four would be human, now normally the spots that fill up the fastest were the infected but when I was playing with a female friend with an insanely girly gamertag (similar to xXxstephbunnyxXx) and we chose a human team, the human spots filled up even faster.

Having previously worked at a game store, I had customers who were constantly surprised at the fact that I played games, to say nothing of most of my favorite games begin of the "survival horror" genre. That said, none of my RL friends have ever batted an eye. I also have never seen any woman who thinks of herself as a "special snowflake" because she engages in gaming as a hobby. I have, however, had a few people I've never even spoken to try to add me on XBox Live because they learned I was a girl (I'm assuming it was because of my avatar), which was both ridiculous and annoying.

I think people need to stop giving a damn whether or not a person lives up to their standards of what constitutes a 'real gamer/nerd/geek' whatever. It's a non-issue. Seriously.

I also find it interesting how it's only women who are required to fulfill these vague prerequisites to be accepted as a legitimate part of the group.
You don't see guys having to defend their love for games. Their taste in games, certainly, but the fundamental credibility of their interest?
Nope.
Thank you. Really, thank you. I'm so sick of how it's perfectly okay for guys to brag about their gaming achievement and the like, but if a girl happens to do it, suddenly she's clamoring for attention. (In my opinion, all sides are capable of it, and they should be called out on it as needed, equally, without their genders being brought into it.)
