Forty percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (33 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).
Oh, and 90% of statistics are made up. No matter how professional it may seem, most of it seems to be too odd to be true. Also depends on what you mean by "gamer" whether it's casual or hobbyist (or professional).

who cares what female characters looka and sound like, honestly who?
every game character in the world is out of proportion and over muscular with obout one emotion split between 5, but thats the point
why would you wanna play a game based around normal people, normal people are boreing
and ofcorse the women in fighting games are dressed in very little, it wouldent have quite the same apple if they where all clad in 18th centry frocks that cover everything but there faces{ and necks depeneding on what it is there whereing}
and in all honesty i have never looked at a game and thought { wow computer generated boobs, just what i want} because that just to sad to even comprehend, i dont think its right to say its all aimed at guy because who honestly who gets excited over computer generated women or men depending how you swing{or if your a girl, but even then}
in the long who cares who the characters are or what they look like,most of them are dicks or bitchs anyway, you ont focus on them you focus on getting them stronger and stringing together bitchin combos
and samus aron was a women and nobody even new that when it first came out, and she kicks asss

For one, they end up being boy's fantasies of how a girl should look. We have the GIGANTIC boobs (I'm pointing to YOU Ivy from Soul Calibur), the armor that couldn't even cover the body of a two year old (which would end in a fast death), and for character development, you get too damn tough for your own good, wishy washy 'I-need-help-because-I'm-a-girl', or they're just too perky. Too perky is bad. Really bad. It's not realistic, unless you want a DIPSTICK to be lead heroine.
There is a Game Overthinker episode that discusses this, and it has the answers you want. It's only 10 minutes long and comes from the guy who has started doing film reviews right here on the escapist show, Moviebob.

It's all about women being portrayed as sex objects in games, and why it is so, and how it might change. I really think you should watch it. You won't regret it. Really.

Well, for a long time, Gaming was a "Guy" thing. This was WAY back in the 80s when all the games weren't targeted at guys. My speculation about the presentation of women, it's just because of gaming have that stereotype. It was also because of cliche. Remember POP: Sands of Time? That game had the female lead from the Gods. She was smart, independent, had a mind of her own, wasn't a love interest for the prince, and -- most importantly -- her chest was reasonably sized. I think that that was the best example of a female character in a game. Lara Croft is obviously the first step away from keeping girls out of gaming by the way her breasts are so prominently featured.

Although, the whole thing is futile. Nobody seems to give a care. It's not that girls can't like games, but its because the inevitable sexist retards turn them away. Its not that the developers are making games that demoralize women; its that the average sexist is the target audience because its pretty much everyone. I really haven't met that many nice people on LIVE, about a 1:20 ratio of nice people to asses. Lets face it, every developer does the fake female character because its aparently what works. In a perfect world, a female character would be recognized by being a normal person instead of breasts tied to a lamp post.
Is that really the most important thing, even above being a realistic character? I mean, some women do actually have cup sizes above b in real life. Don't get me wrong, once you hit the "Soul Calibre" level, it's more than a bit excessive, but I don't think bodily attributes ranks above character depth on either side of the spectrum.

I really don't care how unrealistic game characters are, none of my friends do either. Most of my friends are girls and they really don't care if the female characters that have breasts the size of planets. Then again we don't really care about anything. All i can say is to get over it and stop caring.

I agree with you that these games are sexist but im a guy and that armor is nice to look at in comparison to waves of mutated zombies that are sure to come in seconds. I think that games are trying to improve and slowly by slowly games are getting better. I will never blame a jrpg because they are jrpg's...i don't play them and they are not my concern but there is not much you can say about higher quality games like fallout 3 and half life 2.

I think that in some games it is obviously done purposefully (I personally cant see a better marketing ploy to add to a hardcore game). I have seen many occurrences in games where this is done to men (believe me you probably wouldn't see it from a woman's point of view and i'm not saying that it is done often). I have troubles understanding these sorts of conflicts because i personally never take offense to racist/sexist references unless they are aimed directly at me.

There are quite a few games which feature strong female protagonists;

Mirror's Edge is probably the one that comes quickest to mind...
With Half Life 2 right behind that.
Mass Effect also had good female characters; I mean, if you were a guy, you could eventually have sex with one of the two, but I never saw them as shallow in that sense; actually, Ashley Williams' story was pretty well done, and I always felt like she, as a human female, was done right. I don't know how to classify Liara.
Mona Sax is a wonderful female protagonist. Max Payne's equal, and she saved his ass tons of times.
Samus? To be honest, I don't care if she's got a great body under that Power Suit, but she kicks serious ass and has an awesome set of armor.

Point is, there are quite a few female characters that just fit right, so your mind passes right over them. As soon as you get a Laura Croft or Ivy or anything from Dead or Alive, you notice it, because it's outrageous. Alyx or Faith, well, it's just natural for them.

Off the top of my head:

Zoey in Left 4 Dead
Ashley, Liara and Tali from Mass Effect
Most of the female "heroes" from the Heroes of Might and Magic series (Catherine Gryphonheart being the prime example)
Farah from the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Two Thrones
almost every female lead in the Fire Emblem games
Chell from Portal

Sarah.

Upon further reflection, we can add:
Aya Brea from Parasite Eve (sure she was in a slinky opera dress for the beginning, but she went the more practical route later on)
Meliadoul from Final Fantasy Tactics
Ritz from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Olga Gurlukovich from Metal Gear Solid 2
Ada Wong from Resident Evil 4 (slinky red dress, but she was still a very strong and well-rounded, believable character)

As male I just like to say that it often angers me when developer's often go for the biggest money printer, male fantasies (a la Tomb Raider). I want to see more realistic and honourable female character's in a video game. Alyx from Half Life is a great example, as well as the lead character from Beyond Good and Evil (can't remember that name). Faith of Mirrors Edge is also a great example.

It is pure objectification, and it's not going to stop any time soon, unfortunately. I know it isn't completely one sides, as men are often objectified in games as well, but there's more of a reason for it.

You have to look at the game itself. Most games where men are seething piles of testosterone, there's a reason for it. They're fighting, so they're given the physique someone in that situation might have. There's a reason why they look like they do. It serves a practical purpose.

In the females case, on the other hand, big breasts and revealing clothes serve no practical purpose other than to be eye candy. Unless the female in the game is using her assets to get what she wants, then there's no practical reason for them to be there. Take Ivy, for example: Do her big breasts and tight clothing somehow help her in her fights? Does she have some passive allure that makes male characters who fight her weaker? The answer is no

Nah, Noa is in the first Legaia game. The one in the second game was Maya
