My intention wasn't to insult or post something that has been posted a million times over. Myself being a girl gamer I find myself being treated differently when I play online. I don't know...I just find it odd and was curious weather or not people feel the same way or I'm just getting stuck with a bunch of assholes when I play online.
..You didn't -really- think about that did you?

If not, ...Welcome to the internet. You must be new here.

It doesn't matter. Wondering about these kind of things, whether from a feminist perspective or the reverse, or even perhaps from an ambivalent one just perpetuates a rather tired set of stereotypes that really need throwing out.

So... Wait... Umm... I'll just say girls can enjoy games as much as guys. Just because they have different sexual organs doesn't make them less prone to mental stimulation and enjoyment from awesome games...

I think this thread needs brain sanitizer.

Girls and Games. Oh, I do very much like both.

And I don't mind playing against a girl. Or against Morgan Freeman. Or against anyone who is fun to play against.

It's los simples.

yeah I know the internet is riddled with asses. I think my expectations for tolerance are too high some times, now being one of those times.

I personally have been lead to believe by those on xbox live, that I would clearly play much better were I to sprout a penis.

A million question that have been answered is the point. I think you should use the search bar and see that all of has been asked and answered over and over. If you are over looking it, there is a Search Forums link in the upper blue bar of the forum pages. "Girl gamers" as a title only search will get you several threads and variations of that will get you more and if you look here:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.264525-Poll-Topics-youd-prefer-not-to-see-anymore
It is a Poll of topics people are tired of seeing. Girls and gaming is in 2nd place. My reply is in that thread since the last reply I made to the actual question was in a thread that was removed. Here it is in case you miss it:

Ugh, the girl gamers threads. Yes, we exist. Yes, we can play. Yes, we all have different personalities. Yes, we like all kinds of different games. Just like you. Get over it.
Since as a general group we are all spending more free time at games than running around in real world social situations I am not surprised we haven't actually met.
If I were to generalize guys in games at this point I would think most of you are loud mouth, insult spewing assholes but guess what? I know some really great guys online.
I am not an attention whore and I hate them probably more than you do. I am also the one that will tell them off over it and really confuse the guys that want to rescue girls online. Of course those guys are usually the ones that are all excited about the attention whore talking about her panties so I don't win those fights either.
I am also not the girl that is going to spew insults at you if I beat you, unless we are friends and we have that kind of relationship then I will make snarky remarks to you all the time. ;)
Quit judging us all by the bad ones or by the fact that "you have never met one". There are plenty of them on here and they comment in the threads that have nothing to do with "girl" gamers. They don't usually stand out because they are no different from guy gamers.
Okay, I think I am done at least until the next topic comes up.

You would, it's an extra appendage to push buttons with.

Maybe, but why have expectations at all on the internet? I mean that's just asking for trouble. Like wiring power tools into the 240V line in your house >.> ...which I've never done. ...I still have all my fingers.

I think as video gaming becomes integrated into the mainstream market, it will attract all sorts of new demographic - with girls being one of them. It's no surprise, really. Look at comic book culture. Several years back it would have been one of those underground cultures that only a select few knew of and would secretly keep up with their latest comic book on a weekly, near religious basis. Now comic book heroes have been adopted by mainstream culture we see superheroes in films and even as the basis for television programs. Just look how much money films like Spiderman made, then look at who went to actually see Spiderman. Chances are it wasn't young males. It was probably men and women of all ages. Wives, girlfriends, over 40's, over 50's, kids, you name it. This is what's happening to video gaming. As we evolve from the same "underground" roots of the arcades, people become more aware of it and are more willing to give it a go as opposed to keeping away. I would also say early casual games acted as a kind of "gateway drug" for the uninitiated. If you're a little unsure of what games are exactly, then play a Kinect game or round of Mario Sports, you might be more likely to give COD, Gears or God of War a shot, as it may begin to seem a little bit less intimidating.

Why yes, of course. Girls shouldn't be allowed to play our manly hardcore games. I mean, do they think they're equal or something?

/sarcasm

I really can't believe someone would seriously ask that question.
Me either. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go burn my FPS games and get my ass back in the kitchen.

Especially when it's obvious women should stop playing games and get back in the kitchen.

...Sorry, had to make the joke.

Touche.

Frankly I just dont understand the rage.. if kids are bothering me about my having breasts (which I'm told clearly put me at a disadvantage) I just mute them. No sense in getting all upset about it. Though I have found that most girls (not all) enjoy the attention.. they're the ones who start the smacktalk (even if they suck) which makes us all look bad.. or they giggle like vapid morons "like ohhh mahhh gawwwd".. which also makes the rest of us look bad. Very little happy medium there.

also, havent we had like 3485782350 similar topics? let's move on people.

On the other side of that same coin, the guys who think girls are worse at games make us all look bad.

Also just about every online stereotype is played by a guy. the "girl gamer" is it's own >.> So how is that supposed to make me feel? :(

People in general are just terrible.

I celebrate (exageration) more girls in the competitive online games! They tend to be much better teammates than guys too worried about their KDR.

fair enough. :)
let's all just agree that both genders have members that can be fairly annoying in general and put an end to these "girl gamers" threads once and for all.

I can't even wrap my head around this question, I'm sure you meant to write something different, so please elaborate.
Like should they stick to less violent games, opposed to more male dominated games? It's a stupid stereotype really.
Because we can't handle the violence? We can enjoy in virtual violence as much as anyone else. It is NOT gender based; it is based on the culture and upbringing, social factors and their own personal views. Boys are usually actively encouraged to love violence in their youth, while girls are actively encouraged to love make-up and cooking; hence, this opinions happen. However, most girls develop functional brains and can make their own decisions, even in youth, depending on what kind of parents they have and what are their personal likes and dislikes. If we lived in a society and culture where these gender norms were required by law, then this "should they stick to less violent games" would make sense. Since we don't, it doesn't. Not even out of curiosity. Because it makes no biological, logical or psychological sense. I am also curious whether you think girls should watch less violent movies, TV shows, or read less violent books, or hey, don't watch the news at all because those get pretty violent too with all those terrible shots from actual wars and natural disasters. Why asking that kind of a question in the first place? What are the arguments for it?

We live in the 21st century. Yes, girls play games and they have played them long before others could insult them over a headset in an online game. Yes, girls can enjoy violent games, yes they don't only play 'family friendly' games, yes they could kick your ass and yes, there certainly are women around that play hardcore games better than most people. There are also girls that can't see virtual violence, that can't kick your ass in a shooter, that only play Farmville and Sims and that dress only in pink skirts. There are also women who are in the middle ground. Any kind of a woman people think of as "Does she exist?", here's the answer; she does. No need to make headlines for it.

Well, then, you being a girl makes it all the more sad :( Our way to make those assholes accept the fact that we exist is to not doubt ourselves in the first place. Of course we get treated different online. Everyone does. We get treated differently especially because we have just started making it clear "Hey guys, we are here". We entered the boys club loud and proud and it will take a while before they get over it. We are not going to make it any better if we ask ourselves "Should I go back to playing Farmville instead of this?". No, we shouldn't go back to playing anything that we do not enjoy because a thirteen year old kid called us names in an online game. Yes, I know the feeling, and yes, it makes your experience shitty, and yes I often make male characters in MMOs to avoid this, but it doesn't change the fact that I've beaten other guys in those games, whether they know it or not. Maybe it would be better if they knew it, but I like a male character and I will not make a female one only to let thirteen year old boys know that I'm here. It's irrelevant. Our own insecurity whether or not we should play a 'hardcore' game is what gives those assholes fuel to continue their stupid harassment. If you like a game, you're good at it and it fills your spare time with joy and entertainment, play it. There is no one in the world who should make you feel shitty about having fun. We are not going to get those guys to accept us if we leave the game after they insult us once. It just proves their point, and it shouldn't.

EDIT: Any generalization made about men in online games is to simplify the post. Of course not all men in online games are thirteen year old assholes :)
