Uhm... Yes, there are more gamers in general than there used to be 15 years ago, so there are also more female gamers... regardless of genre... I guess?

Do you think that they should stick to more family friendly games?
I can't even wrap my head around this question, I'm sure you meant to write something different, so please elaborate.
Like should they stick to less violent games, opposed to more male dominated games? It's a stupid stereotype really.
Because we can't handle the violence? We can enjoy in virtual violence as much as anyone else. It is NOT gender based; it is based on the culture and upbringing, social factors and their own personal views. Boys are usually actively encouraged to love violence in their youth, while girls are actively encouraged to love make-up and cooking; hence, this opinions happen. However, most girls develop functional brains and can make their own decisions, even in youth, depending on what kind of parents they have and what are their personal likes and dislikes. If we lived in a society and culture where these gender norms were required by law, then this "should they stick to less violent games" would make sense. Since we don't, it doesn't. Not even out of curiosity. Because it makes no biological, logical or psychological sense. I am also curious whether you think girls should watch less violent movies, TV shows, or read less violent books, or hey, don't watch the news at all because those get pretty violent too with all those terrible shots from actual wars and natural disasters. Why asking that kind of a question in the first place? What are the arguments for it?
We live in the 21st century. Yes, girls play games and they have played them long before others could insult them over a headset in an online game. Yes, girls can enjoy violent games, yes they don't only play 'family friendly' games, yes they could kick your ass and yes, there certainly are women around that play hardcore games better than most people. There are also girls that can't see virtual violence, that can't kick your ass in a shooter, that only play Farmville and Sims and that dress only in pink skirts. There are also women who are in the middle ground. Any kind of a woman people think of as "Does she exist?", here's the answer;
she does. No need to make headlines for it.

My intention wasn't to insult or post something that has been posted a million times over. Myself being a girl gamer I find myself being treated differently when I play online. I don't know...I just find it odd and was curious weather or not people feel the same way or I'm just getting stuck with a bunch of assholes when I play online.
Well, then, you being a girl makes it all the more sad

Our way to make those assholes accept the fact that we exist is to
not doubt ourselves in the first place. Of course we get treated different online.
Everyone does. We get treated differently especially because we have just started making it clear "Hey guys, we are here". We entered the boys club loud and proud and it will take a while before they get over it. We are not going to make it any better if we ask ourselves "Should I go back to playing Farmville instead of this?". No, we shouldn't go back to playing anything that we do not enjoy because a thirteen year old kid called us names in an online game. Yes, I know the feeling, and yes, it makes your experience shitty, and yes I often make male characters in MMOs to avoid this, but it doesn't change the fact that I've beaten other guys in those games, whether they know it or not. Maybe it would be better if they knew it, but I like a male character and I will not make a female one only to let thirteen year old boys know that I'm here. It's irrelevant. Our own insecurity whether or not we should play a 'hardcore' game is what gives those assholes fuel to continue their stupid harassment. If you like a game, you're good at it and it fills your spare time with joy and entertainment, play it. There is no one in the world who should make you feel shitty about having fun. We are not going to get those guys to accept us if we leave the game after they insult us once. It just proves their point, and it shouldn't.
EDIT: Any generalization made about men in online games is to simplify the post. Of course not all men in online games are thirteen year old assholes
