Good news, in one of the biggest changes to the British monarchy for decades, all 16 Commonwealth realms have agreed to switch to equal primogeniture. Under the previous system a son automatically got preference over his sister(s) to become the monarch, even if the sister was older. Now under these new laws, the first child of the monarch will be first-in-line, regardless of gender.

As a loyal British monarchist, I'm very happy to see a long-needed change to conform to our modern values. Other subjects of Her Majesty and foreigners too, how do you feel about this change? Do you think it's for the best, a ill-advised break in tradition or a sticking plaster for a system you don't agree with?

The monarchy hasn't mattered for a long time.

They no longer rule our country, they are merely a tourist attraction.

It doesn't matter if it's a male or female, whether it's Timmy Mallet or Jo Brand sat on the throne.

They are about as important to me as Blackpool Tower is. It was fun to look at once but quickly lost interest.

They serve no real purpose.

I like Blackpool Tower more than the royal family. That said, I approve of the removal of any sexist anachronism, however peripheral.

So about the earliest this is going to matter is is William and Kate have a daughter first, and William is done being King like 50 years from now?

Still... cool, I guess? As an Australian I guess we're part of the Commonwealth so this is still technically relevant.

About time too, the monarchy seems to be slowly catching up with the reality of today's society, which is nice. Some of the most successful monarchs have been Queens so this probably should have happened earlier, although, at least in the current social climate it will be met with little or no backlash.

While traditions can be nice to maintain, the gender bias in this particular situation makes little sense nowadays so it's a welcome change for me.

OT: The lifting of the ban on not being able to marry a Roman Catholic is also pretty significant. The monarch being the head of the Church of England and whatnot.

so does this mean it goes Charles then Anne in the line from now on?
It doesn't affect them, just the young ones.

Which is good for me! Eventually, I'll be the only one left in line!
well it sucks it wont happen with the current line but its good to see it come into action for the younguns

Well it's good to hear that the British Monarchy has started to embrace gender equality, that being said, I was under the impression that the monarchy no longer held any real power and that the monarch him or herself was mostly just a figurehead. Aside from being a nice gesture, does this have any real effects? It's not like these potential future female monarchs would have any real power.

Still, its good that women are now equal in the line of succession. In this day and age there's no reason that they shouldn't be.

I tend to agree with that.

...

Oh, this could affect the line of succession in the immediate future, if something untoward were to happen to a few certain people. Not likely though.

Despite whatever power the monarchy may have in theory in Canada or any other country, I agree with the fellow who said that it's little more than a tourist attraction now. Is this a good change? In so far as discrimination is bad, yes it is definitely a good change. But it's still a change to a system with little real power, and vastly diminished importance. Sure they can technically get rid of elected representatives by doing things like dissolving Canadian parliament, but I'd like to see them try without the consent of the people.

Frankly, I'd rather see the monarchy abolished altogether if only because I dislike the idea of a monarchy existing at all. They're an unnecessary remnant of a bygone era. Though I doubt that it will ever happen so long as they can still be trotted out to attract tourist dollars.

I don not care!, thats my opinion, the monarchy of this country is little more then a formality at this point and it doesnt matter who is "in charge" as the power they have is purely for show and they dont really have it anyway.

i fear people in this country and others still believe the queen too be in power as opposed to her actual position of a tourist attraction.

The Wha? ......

I kid, I kid. But seriously, who even cares about these guys anymore? The commonwealth and the monarchy both.

I really couldn't give a shit. Of all the places where equality is lacking, the line of succession to the throne should be at the bottom of the list.

Kind of baffled by how anyone could be a "loyal British Monarchist" at 18. My grandparents don't even care that much.

About fucking time this country was dragged kicking and screaming into the twentieth century. Shame it's the twenty first century already, where the idea of having a monarchy at all is so many shades of retarded. Still, I long ago accepted getting rid of them would be more trouble than it's worth, so we might as well be thankful for any good they do.

It may be a pretty meaningless gesture practically speaking, but any kind of progress is good news.

Pretty much my thoughts on the whole thing. Whenever I hear anything about them it on the news, it just becomes white noise.

This ruling affects absolutely nobody but whatever sprog Kate gives birth to first and if its a boy, it doesn't even effect him.

What a load of crap.
