A Hermit's Cave
As per topic title, I want a new project to sink my teeth into (and preferably get a decent start to before I start my new job).

Stuff I've already covered (whether in series/standalones/short stories):

Second Punic War
Wars of German Unification/Arms Race/WWI (this one was speculative)
WWII
Greco-Persian Wars (specifically the Marathon/Thermopylae/Plataea saga)
Third Crusade

Preferably pre-20th century, involving a war (or three), loads of politicking, speculation (i.e. changed historical canon) if it makes sense/is plausible and justification. So, hit me...(!)

The guerilla campaigns in Portugal and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars?

Some guy's experiences around the Battle of Crecy?

The Italian Renaissance perhaps? The French revolution and Napoleon? US war of Independence? Indian Mutiny or the Opium Wars?

You could easily write fictions around these with an emphasis on politics. In fact a historical novel about the Opium Wars would be pretty damn relevant to the current "war on drugs" today.

What do you mean by "changed historical canon?" You write speculative historical fiction? I would have considered doing a "what if?" fiction based around the Viking colonisation of America being successful. Or the Roman Empire never falling, for whatever reason.

You did work on classical stuff. I love you.

I've been studying a lot of Stuart England, specifically the kingship of Charles I. His constant failures as a king might be interesting to write about, there are plenty of perspectives you could take; would be a fair bit of research though.

Ah, Napoleon is full of endless possibilities.

What if he had gone to war with America rather than giving up on the New World territories altogether and selling the U.S. the Louisiana Purchase at a grotesquely low price? THE WORLD WILL NEVER NOW, AT LEAST UNTIL THE HISTORY CHANNEL DOES A DOCUMENTARY ON IT.
While we're in a lovely brainstorm session of "What if" scenarios...

Would The Mongols have conquered Europe if Genghis Khan had not died? Would his empire have lasted? Would his legacy have invoked this law of timetravel? [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Ptitleo3hnku5u?from=Main.GodwinsLawOfTimeTravel]

THIS DOCUMENTARY MUST BE MADE!

Speculative Fiction perhaps? Imperial Germany wins World War 1, and western Europe becomes client states? The Nazi party never rises and the United German states and their protectorates turn their industrial might against the still developing Bolshevik Russia?

That'd be a cool story.

What if Caesar wasn't killed and he lived to consolidate the Roman Empire? Gaul remained Gaul and not become France, the Germanic tribes crushed, the Vikings humiliated, and no "Dark Ages" upon Europe, and perhaps, most importantly, no Christianity.

It's a tall, order, I know, but I'd listen tot that story.

EDIT: Also, if this is too much, then I'd do something on Warwick, the Kingmaker, my favorite English historical figure.

Irish war of independence and civil war or the fall of rome. As for alternate history, an aging Micheal Collins and a ragtag group must stop Hitler's robot dinosaurs that shoot lasers out their eyes.

Hey, I think I've got two

Hmm, What if the french revolution was a failure?
What would happen to the french people if they stayed under their previous rule

And,What if the american revolution never kicked off.
This would lead to the british empire being a larger military power in europe as well as the obvious results.

Anyway, hope you like my suggestions.

Something on the Byzantines, maybe. Manzikert, or the Fall of Constantinople. That accursed Fourth Crusade.

The Romans. Easily ripe for exploitation.

OK, very simple: Upon the collapse of the Roman Empire it broke apart and recessed into different parts, leading to lots and lots of civil wars.

Eventually the Romans became the Byzantine Empire (Think Istanbul and Greece and a bit of Turkey).

That^^^ is fact.

-----------------------------------------------

What if upon the collapse of the Roman Empire... The Emperor and his family were in Briton(historical spelling). They had pacified the people of the land, killing most of them and leaving a people-less land ripe for colonisation.

Upon the collapse instead of saving Rome, it is evacuated and much of the people flock to this very very defend-able island.

That sir... leaves you with all the possibilities you could fucking ask for!

You could even fast forward into the future and have the world in the 1000's suddenly invaded by the Romans again, hell you could do anything.

You could even have the Emperors not making it there and there is reinstated a Democracy. Democracy instantly leads to politics and backstabbing, in a higher quantity and quality than with kings blatantly killing people in their own court rooms.

-----------------------------------------------

You want a really cheap idea but simple idea. Alexander the Great didn't die young.

My personal opinion is that once guns are brought into war... its cheating.

Fourth Crusade and the sacking of Constantinople. Tons of stuff to play around with be it war, politics, religion. Hell, you can even alter history and make it that Constantinople fights off the crusading army and sides with the Arab countries or something.
