NO!!
I am sorry to have to *scream* that but that is exactly the point you are misunderstanding! Get Nintendo hardware for Nintendo games IS the terms of service!
Of course you need the right hardware to play the games. You're still not getting what we're saying if you keep bringing this up. The terms of service only matter to people using the service. It also isn't some sovereign doctrine. We're asking that the software be opened by Nintendo for use on other consoles. So any comments about the current "terms of service" is completely inane (useless). What does the current terms of use have anything to do with us not being able to ask they be changed? We all get that we can't currently play these games on other systems, otherwise we wouldn't bother asking that we be able to play them elsewhere.
So, I repeat, we do not misunderstand any terms of service.
Exclusives are what drive people to one machine over another and Nintendo has a roster 5 times the size of the others in terms of exclusives. What's more most of that is FIRST-party material.
Are you talking about the slew of garbage that what little 3rd party support they actually get churn out? It is VERY rare that 3rd party software for Nintendo is worth much of anything. I think it's pretty darn clear that the big names are Nintendo and just Nintendo when it comes to games on the Nintendo consoles. More on this in the rest of the response
You saying you want to play those games on other systems is like saying you want to play Halo on your PS3. That's just not the way it works. That's wanting everything to be taken to YOUR system(s) of choice, and that is straight-up not the way Nintendo works.
Furthermore, this would NOT make them more money! This might make them a few more sales in software but they would be losing on all the sales in Hardware that a lot of people get just FOR their Nintendo fixes. Nintendo does not cram their boxes full of unnecessary hardware, so they make profit on their machines. Plus they make their machines so they can play around with new hardware ideas that other companies are too scared to think of - motion control, tablet control, and dual screens in a handheld are all NINTENDO prioneerings. And in case you haven't noticed, about half or more of the people that buy Xboxes and Playstations over Nintendo do it because they've *given up* on Nintendo in the first place. They don't care about the games you're arguing would make a profit (enough to overcome hardware loss) on other systems.
Let me say this. Nintendo consoles have been significantly weaker than their competition since after the N64. This means that the huge AAA games are made for the other consoles but NOT for the gamecube/wii (and likely WiiU once the ps4/Xbone are in full swing).
This is because Nintendo, at its core, is a software company. They can't really compete with the massive hardware company that is Sony or the cash bloated Microsoft who likewise has real advantages when it comes to hardware thanks to relationships they've already built with hardware companies that rely on OS compatibility.
So when Nintendo makes hardware now, it's woefully behind. Thankfully, the Wii showed the benefit of having fun peripherals and I'd say they did damn well on that with a cheap system. But I still couldn't play all the big games that the other systems were capable of. The WiiU is a nice piece of hardware. It is significantly more powerful than the 360 in my opinion. But with the
Now enter Sony and Microsoft. They have strong 3rd party support. Yes, they each have their Halos/Uncharted just like Nintendo has its Mario. But then you start getting into stuff that both Microsoft and Sony get that Nintendo doesn't. The big blockbuster games. Bioshock, Metro, Mass Effect, Battlefield, Skryim, Assassin's Creed and everything in between. These are great games and they didn't come out on the Wii and couldn't have come out without a tremendous amount of downscaling. Did you ever see COD on the Wii compared to other titles? It was significantly and noticeably inferior.
Now that both of the other consoles and computers are all x86 and the WiiU decided to remain proprietary, there's an additional hurdle to developing on the WiiU that isn't present elsewhere. It's a larger blow than you may realize. It certainly isn't as difficult as the ps3 was but it's a hurdle all the same.
So, since Nintendo can't make hardware that's good enough to get all those huge games, all that's left to them is a small handful of exclusive 3rd party stuff (as opposed to a massive library of 3rd party games, exclusive or not on the other consoles), horribly downscaled ports, and then their own excellent line of Nintendo software. For this reason, I view Nintendo as a publishing company. They put games out at around the same rate as EA or some other big company but Nintendo is one of the best.
This is why Nintendo and not Microsoft or Sony needs to begin selling their games on other systems and to stop making home consoles. I'm not talking about their handheld division. Nintendo puts out a lot more games for their handhelds than they do for even the home console. But there is no reason for me to buy a 32GB WiiU at $350-400 when it won't be able to play the vast majority of games other consoles like the $400 ps4 can play. If you look at the games that are exclusive to the other consoles and not available on the Wii then you'll see a mountain of content they can't do. What's more, the WiiU is very behind as a media center so there's even another function missing there. It's riculous. Look at the two consoles. Do you really think that, as a piece of hardware, that the WiiU deserves to be within $50 of the most powerful console of the next generation? It is current gen technology in a next gen console.
So yes, I do think Nintendo needs to get out of the console business. They're just holding their games hostage at the cost of a console and that's not enough to get me to buy into it. Here's the worst part of debates like this. You're not dealing with people who dislike Nintendo like Sony fans and Microsoft fans have to deal with when debating eachother. You're dealing with people who like Nintendo, love their software and completely understand the appeal but cannot justify the price of a console just to play 10 first party Nintendo games over the next five years and to have it take up space in their entertainment shelf. I literally still have an N64 hooked up to my 42" 1080p TV and frankly, the WiiU doesn't deserve to take its place. I'm not even motivated to replace the Wii with it. Not for $350 for the model I'd want. What's more, my wife and I both have high paying jobs. It isn't even a problem for us but I just can't justify the expenditure. I can't imagine what it'd be like for a hardcore gamer who is also a Nintendo fan like but is strapped for cash and can only choose one system.
And what's more, what do people like you lose? You'd get to have all the same content you'd get now, but on whatever other device you'd like. If we're not talking about nixing the handheld division or any software, then is it really just so important to have an underpowered console with the Nintendo logo on it sitting under the TV that you'd rather not have something better that also plays it? Really?
