I've been smoking for around 4 years now because I thought it would be cool to start when I was in Secondary school, as you do.

I've started smoking more and more recently and now it's got to the point where I'm smoking upwards of 20 a day which when you're 17 isn't very good.

Have any of you quit smoking, and if so how did you do it?

Any help is appreciated.

as odd as this sounds, there's 2 things you need to do. first you need to want to quit, next you just stop and don't smoke again

best way i can really say doing it is slowly weening yourself off. like start to have a certain amount of smokes each day, ie one after each meal, one when you get up and one before bed and then slowly take out a smoke every week or so often. after a while you won't want to have any

I've never smoked, but I think it's great that you do. You're gonna thank yourself in several years when you're lungs haven't killed you.

i dont smoke... but i know 2 people who quit smoking in 2 very different ways

The first:
He read some book... dunno what it was about, but it would somehow mentally get you to stop smoking.. it was scary at some point because he tried to smoke after he read the book and then said to me.. "i forgot how to smoke.." after that we agreed the book worked... he didnt even feel like smoking ever again

the other one:
He just stopped smoking... just that suddenly - he didnt have to go through anything or do anything... he just quit and he have been doing it for years, so i was impressed :)

i am tryign to pack up smoking myself dude so i know how you feel.

some advice i got which might help is take the time that you have your first fag of the day, and delay it by an hour each day, i did and packed up for 3 months, then a load of shit kicked in and i started smoking again, but that's irrelevant, if you can delay by anything from half an hour to an hour each day, eventually you will have pretty much packed up..

hope this helps dude

I just decided one day that i didn't want to do it anymore. Before that i used be a pretty heavy smoker.
I still have the occasional cigar though

Quit as soon as you can, you're 17.
He wants to know how.

I'd say go cold Turkey. A friend of mine quit recently and he said it's mostly force of routine that keeps you hooked.

Of course, you know it's working when you see babies crawling across the ceiling.

I quit pretty easily. Decided I was going to stop, got some nicotine gum (go NHS it's pretty cheap on prescription), used about 3 pieces and stopped with no problems whatsoever, although I was on a methadone script at the time and smoking was never a particularly big thing for me.

Only allow yourself so much money a week on cigs. Then buy horrible tasting cigarettes. thats what my aunt did. then, since you dont have money to buy good ones, you will WANT to stop.

I smoked for nine years, then I just decided to stop. You have to really want it. The cravings are not too bad, you just have to have the will power to stop. I did it cold turkey and it was not bad at all.

Cold turkey is the only way to actually do it and have it work. It takes about 10 days for most of the toxins to work their way out of your system, but those 10 days suck like a vacuum cleaner on steroids. Don't bother with the gum or the patches, those don't actually do anything except cost a lot of money and keep you from detoxing off the nicotine.

Once you make it past the first few days, it becomes easier. You have to keep in mind, though, that you'll still be addicted. I don't buy the force of routine thing for even a second, I've quit several times over the years and you never do just suddenly stop craving cigarettes during the process. Hence having to quit several times.

I did it with the generic "Wal-mart" brand patch.
Cheap and effective.

Carry a bottle of water with you. Whenever you want a smoke put a bit of water in your mouth, not a lot mind, just a bit, then suck it down. I don't mean drink it either, inhale it. You'll cough for a bit, or die if you didn't listen and used too much, either way you won't want another smoke for a while. Just keep doing this and after about 3 days your brain will associate the feeling of semi-drowning with cigarette cravings, then you're set.

I'm aware. I don't smoke cigarettes so I can only offer encouragement.

The same reason I started smoking; to hang out with the cool kids.
Forunatly I never really devevoped a PHYSICAL adiction but a MENTAL one.
So quiting wasn't to difficult for me.

'Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I must have done it 300 times now' - Mark Twain.

You're not going to manage to quit unless you really admit you have a problem.
