Gizmodo blogger goes all "mean girl" on MtG world champ and the internet EXPLODES WITH RAGE

The internet is going nuts about this "blogger" at Gizmodo (US) named Alyssa Bereznak who wrote an article for Gizmodo about her OkCupid! dating adventure. The hitch here is that she identifies her date publicly, then proceeds to eviscerate him because he's a former world champ at Magic the Gathering.

It's one thing to have a bad date. It's another thing to mock your date because you think they have a "dweeby" hobby. But publicly mocking them on the internet and identifying them for page hits is just... beyond disgusting.

Check out the Gizmodo (AU) and Kotaku (AU) posts on this - the Australian sister sites were not amused by this behavior.

This was on /adv/ earlier actually and I agree that it's bloody rude of her.

I especially didn't appreciate her mocking his hobby, but that goes without saying. Frankly there seems to be a misconception that it's not manly to have hobbies and that geeky hobbies are somehow pathetic, but they're no more so than buying hugely expensive face cream that has some bullshit made-up molecule in it, or clothes you'll never wear.

I think it's frankly worse than rude (but par for the course for the US Gizmodo site, their entire editorial staff seems to be made entirely out of feminine hygene products).

It'd be one thing if she just blogged about her date, but it's the entire highschool shaming and naming thing that sticks in my craw. I wonder if this guy was totally okay with having his name and his internet dating profile thrown out there to the masses. I know I would be mortified if it happened to me.

He's also evidently a hedge fund manager and fairly well off.

I mean, sure, he might be a creepy jerk in person. But she could have blogged about that instead of singling out the gaming hobby, like it's girl-repellant or something. Seems especially short sighted for a "journalist" working for a geek-tech website.

But then again, I've had the same luck with women too.


They notice the 360 and immediately Im the stereotypical gamer, but even then they had the decency to ask about it and at worse just admit that they don't think it would work.

At best however is making a friend who can play Spy so well that they make Pyro's cry.


Never did they go out and proclaim how much of a loser or nerd I am to the world [I am very much capable of doing that myself].

Don't worry about it. I met my wife on World of Warcraft. She's beautiful and we just celebrated four years of marriage a couple months ago. We go to cons together and share books and visit strange places (she has a super weird hobby herself - elegant gothic lolita clothing).

The only thing anyone needs to fall in love is courage and the ability to communicate with honesty.

Wow, what a bitchy move you did. Heaven forbid someone has a hobby that they're exceptionally good at and can earn a shitload of money from tournaments. But oh no, it's NERDY!

I'm just gonna say this: You're a horrible person, and with that sort of attitude you'll probably die single, which is a good thing - because I feel sorry for anyone who gets into a relationship with you, you shallow, mean woman.

In 16 years she is in a lot of trouble.

Here is my personal opinion on something of this topic: No matter how much you dislike a certain topic, or how obsessed someone is with said topic, that doesn't mean they're stereotypical or anything of the sort. Aside for my love of dragons, serial killers and giant robots, I don't have anything "geeky" about me. I'm a guy who's been acting since he was 10 and he wants to have a full out career in it.

From what the article reads, this girl seems more obsessed with Magic than he is. I mean, to start off with the guy only mentions he's the world champion on the first date, and then later takes her to that show and it was probably never mentioned again until their next date where she interrogates him practically, the poor guy probably thinking she's interested in it.

As I said, I'm an actor, acting is my life and my girlfriend shares a similar interest. However, she doesn't understand my hobbies like video games or surfing, but I don't understand her hobbies either. My best friend, my closest friend I met through video games. My girlfriend I met by pure chance and the fact we even know each other exist is remarkable. [We're seven hours apart.]

But on the topic at hand, this guy is probably every girl's dream boy that just so happens to be a little too good at a certain card game.

MTG is cool.
Drafting is actually one of the best times I've had recently, just because I got to meet people I didn't know.
Yeah, my deck sucked.
Yeah, I left early on because it was getting late.

That's a really big overreaction. I mean, sure, that's something you might want to mention on your profile, but it doesn't guarantee that his whole life is consumed by the card game, even though he's a world champ. I'm sure Bill Gates has a life outside of computers.

The whole tone of the article was so vindictive like he had done this great wronging to her; I mean, she felt the need to take revenge on him. It's ridiculous.
